Remote Keyless Entry Systems: Diagnosis Chevrolet Prizm I

PRELIMINARY INSPECTION

Check D/L fuse (30-amp), GAUGE fuse (10-amp) and DOME fuse (15-amp). Verify proper operation of power door locks and interior light systems. Ensure ground connections are clean and tight. Check for proper installation of any aftermarket electronic equipment that may affect integrity of other systems. Try a known good transmitter. If system operates, change batteries in first transmitter and try again. If transmitter still does not operate, it is defective. Ensure transmitter battery terminals are clean and make good contact with battery.

SYMPTOM INDEX

TEST A: DOOR LOCK INOPERATIVE WITH TRANSMITTER - ALL DOORS OR TEST B: DOOR LOCK INOPERATIVE WITH TRANSMITTER - DRIVER DOOR

  1. Test power door lock function by pressing LOCK button on door switch. If doors lock properly, go to next step. If doors do not lock properly, see POWER DOOR LOCKS - PRIZM article.
  2. Remove ignition key from ignition lock cylinder. Press LOCK button on transmitter once. If all doors do not lock, go to next step. If all doors lock, see «SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK»(ref-4698-S18570451942000080200000) under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
  3. Test door lock function with known good transmitter. If all doors lock, go to next step. If all doors do not lock, go to step 5.
  4. Replace RKE transmitter. Program transmitter, see «TRANSMITTER PROGRAMMING»(ref-4698-S10880577892000080100000) under PROGRAMMING. See «SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK»(ref-4698-S18570451942000080200000) under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
  5. Disconnect Remote Control Door Lock Receiver (RCDLR) connector. Connect a fused jumper (20-amp) between RCDLR connector terminal No. 15 (Blue/Black wire) and ground. (Scheme 1) If all doors do not lock, go to next step. If all doors lock, go to step 7.
  6. Repair open in Blue/Black wire between RCDLR connector and splice SP252. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-4698-S26560296182000071800000). See «SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK»(ref-4698-S18570451942000080200000) under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
  7. Replace RCDLR. See «REMOTE CONTROL DOOR LOCK RECEIVER»(ref-4698-S32396449282000080200000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Program transmitters, see «TRANSMITTER PROGRAMMING»(ref-4698-S10880577892000080100000) under PROGRAMMING. See «SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK»(ref-4698-S18570451942000080200000) under TROUBLE SHOOTING.

TEST C: DOOR UNLOCK INOPERATIVE WITH TRANSMITTER - ALL DOORS

  1. Test power door lock function by pressing UNLOCK button on door switch. If doors unlock properly, go to next step. If doors do not unlock properly, see POWER DOOR LOCKS - PRIZM article.
  2. Remove ignition key from ignition lock cylinder. Press UNLOCK button on transmitter twice. If all doors do not unlock, go to next step. If all doors unlock, see «SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK»(ref-4698-S18570451942000080200000) under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
  3. Test door unlock function with known good transmitter. If all doors unlock, go to next step. If all doors do not unlock, go to step 5.
  4. Replace RKE transmitter. Program transmitter, see «TRANSMITTER PROGRAMMING»(ref-4698-S10880577892000080100000) under PROGRAMMING. See «SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK»(ref-4698-S18570451942000080200000) under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
  5. Disconnect Remote Control Door Lock Receiver (RCDLR) connector. Connect a fused jumper (20-amp) to RCDLR connector terminal No. 7 (Blue/Red wire) and touch other end of jumper to ground twice. (Scheme 1) If all doors do not unlock, go to next step. If all doors unlock, go to step 7.
  6. Repair open in Blue/Red wire between RCDLR connector and splice S201. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-4698-S26560296182000071800000). See «SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK»(ref-4698-S18570451942000080200000) under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
  7. Replace RCDLR. See «REMOTE CONTROL DOOR LOCK RECEIVER»(ref-4698-S32396449282000080200000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Program transmitters, see «TRANSMITTER PROGRAMMING»(ref-4698-S10880577892000080100000) under PROGRAMMING. See «SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK»(ref-4698-S18570451942000080200000) under TROUBLE SHOOTING.

TEST D: DOOR UNLOCK INOPERATIVE WITH TRANSMITTER - DRIVER DOOR

  1. Test power door lock function by pressing UNLOCK button on door switch. If doors unlock properly, go to next step. If doors do not unlock properly, see POWER DOOR LOCKS - PRIZM article.
  2. Remove ignition key from ignition lock cylinder. Press UNLOCK button on transmitter once. If driver door does not unlock, go to next step. If driver door unlocks, see «SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK»(ref-4698-S18570451942000080200000) under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
  3. Test door unlock function with known good transmitter. If driver door unlocks, go to next step. If driver door does not unlock, go to step 5.
  4. Replace RKE transmitter. Program transmitter, see «TRANSMITTER PROGRAMMING»(ref-4698-S10880577892000080100000) under PROGRAMMING. See «SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK»(ref-4698-S18570451942000080200000) under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
  5. Disconnect Remote Control Door Lock Receiver (RCDLR) connector. Connect a fused jumper (20-amp) between RCDLR connector terminal No. 7 (Blue/Red wire) and ground. If driver door does not unlock, go to next step. (Scheme 1) If driver door unlocks, go to step 7.
  6. Repair open in Blue/Red wire between RCDLR connector and splice S201. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-4698-S26560296182000071800000). See «SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK»(ref-4698-S18570451942000080200000) under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
  7. Replace RCDLR. See «REMOTE CONTROL DOOR LOCK RECEIVER»(ref-4698-S32396449282000080200000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Program transmitters, see «TRANSMITTER PROGRAMMING»(ref-4698-S10880577892000080100000) under PROGRAMMING. See «SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK»(ref-4698-S18570451942000080200000) under TROUBLE SHOOTING.

TEST E: KEYLESS ENTRY DOES NOT PROGRAM

  1. Use a known functional transmitter in order to program system. If system operates properly, go to next step. If system does not operate properly, go to step 3 .
  2. Replace inoperative RKE transmitter. Program transmitter, see «TRANSMITTER PROGRAMMING»(ref-4698-S10880577892000080100000) under PROGRAMMING.
  3. Replace remote control door lock receiver. See «REMOTE CONTROL DOOR LOCK RECEIVER»(ref-4698-S32396449282000080200000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Program transmitters, see «TRANSMITTER PROGRAMMING»(ref-4698-S10880577892000080100000) under PROGRAMMING.

TEST F: KEYLESS ENTRY SYSTEM INOPERATIVE

  1. Test power door lock function by operating system with buttons on door switches. If doors locks operate properly, go to next step. If door locks do not operate properly, see POWER DOOR LOCKS - PRIZM article.
  2. Reprogram Remote Control Door Lock Receiver (RCDLR), see «TRANSMITTER PROGRAMMING»(ref-4698-S10880577892000080100000) under PROGRAMMING. If system does not operate properly, go to next step. If system operates properly, see «SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK»(ref-4698-S18570451942000080200000) under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
  3. Disconnect RCDLR connector. Using DVOM, check for battery voltage at RCDLR connector terminal No. 8 (Blue/Yellow wire). (Scheme 1) If battery voltage does not exist, go to next step. If battery voltage does exist, go to step 5.
  4. Repair open in Blue/Yellow wire between RCDLR and fuse and relay block No. 1. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-4698-S26560296182000071800000). See «SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK»(ref-4698-S18570451942000080200000) under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
  5. Turn ignition on. Connect a test light between RCDLR connector terminal No. 13 (Red/Blue wire) and ground. (Scheme 1) If test light is off, go to next step. If test light is on, go to step 7.
  6. Repair open in Red/Blue wire between RCDLR connector and junction block No. 2. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-4698-S26560296182000071800000). See «SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK»(ref-4698-S18570451942000080200000) under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
  7. Test RCDLR connector terminal No. 1 (White/Black wire) for poor connection to ground. (Scheme 1) If poor connection exists, go to next step. If poor connection does not exist, go to step 9.
  8. Repair open or poor connection in White/Black wire between RCDLR and ground connection G200. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-4698-S26560296182000071800000). See «SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK»(ref-4698-S18570451942000080200000) under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
  9. Remove ignition key from ignition lock cylinder. Using DVOM, test for short to ground at RCDLR connector terminal No. 10 (Blue/Black wire). (Scheme 1) If a short to ground exists, go to next step. If a short to ground does not exist, go to step 11.
  10. Repair short to ground in Blue/Black wire between RCDLR connector and ignition key alarm switch. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-4698-S26560296182000071800000). See «SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK»(ref-4698-S18570451942000080200000) under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
  11. Using DVOM, test for open in Red/White wire between RCDLR connector terminal No. 14 and splice SP261. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-4698-S26560296182000071800000). If open exists, go to next step. If open does not exist, go to step 13.
  12. Repair open in Red/White wire between RCDLR connector terminal No. 14 and splice SP261. See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(ref-4698-S26560296182000071800000). See «SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK»(ref-4698-S18570451942000080200000) under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
  13. Replace RCDLR. See «REMOTE CONTROL DOOR LOCK RECEIVER»(ref-4698-S32396449282000080200000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Program transmitters, see «TRANSMITTER PROGRAMMING»(ref-4698-S10880577892000080100000) under PROGRAMMING. See «SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK»(ref-4698-S18570451942000080200000) under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
