Control Module References
Service Programming System (SPS)
For step by step programming instructions, please refer to the techline information system (TIS) terminal.
Review the information below to ensure proper programming protocol.
| IMPORTANT | DO NOT program a control module unless you are directed by a service procedure or you are directed by a General Motors Corporation service bulletin. Programming a control module at any other time will not permanently correct a customer's concern. It is essential that the Tech 2 and the TIS terminal are both equipped with the latest software before performing service programming system (SPS). Some modules will require additional programming/setup events performed before or after programming. Some vehicles may require the use of a CANDi module for programming. Review the appropriate service information for these procedures. DTCs may set during programming. Clear DTCs after programming is complete. Clearing powertrain DTCs will set the Inspection/Maintenance (I/M) system status indicators to NO. |
Ensure the following conditions are met before programming a control module
- Vehicle system voltage There is not a charging system concern. All charging system concerns must be repaired before programming a control module. Battery voltage is greater than 12 volts but less than 16 volts. The battery must be charged before programming the control module if the battery voltage is low. A battery charger is NOT connected to the vehicle's battery. Incorrect system voltage or voltage fluctuations from a battery charger, may cause programming failure or control module damage. Turn OFF or disable any system that may put a load on the vehicle's battery, such as the following components: Twilight sentinel Interior lights Daytime running lights (DRL)-Applying the parking brake, on most vehicles, disables the DRL system. Refer to the Owner's manual. Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems Engine cooling fans, radio, etc.
- The ignition switch must be in the proper position. The Tech 2 prompts you to turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. DO NOT change the position of the ignition switch during the programming procedure, unless instructed to do so.
- Make certain all tool connections are secure, including the following components and circuits: The RS-232 communication cable port The connection at the data link connector (DLC) The voltage supply circuits
- DO NOT disturb the tool harnesses while programming. If an interruption occurs during the programming procedure, programming failure or control module damage may occur.
- DO NOT turn OFF the ignition if the programming procedure is interrupted or unsuccessful. Ensure that all control module and DLC connections are secure and the TIS terminal operating software is up to date. Attempt to reprogram the control module. If the control module cannot be programmed, replace the control module.
Body Control Module Programming and Setup
A new body control module (BCM) must be programmed with the proper regular production option (RPO) configurations. The BCM stores the information regarding the vehicle options and if the BCM is not properly configured with the correct RPO codes the BCM will not control all of the features properly. The Tech 2 software will automatically prompt you with the various RPOs available for the vehicle. Ensure that the following conditions exist in order to prepare for BCM programming
- This entire procedure has been reviewed before starting
- The battery is fully charged.
- A CANdi module is installed between the vehicle and the scan tool.
- The ignition switch is in the ON position.
- The data link connector (DLC) is accessible.
- All disconnected modules and devices are reconnected before programming.
BCM Programming
| IMPORTANT | Use extreme care when verifying both the VIN and Odometer reading that is set in the service BCM. Once the VIN and Odometer are set in the replacement BCM it is impossible to change them, and if there is a mismatch, the part will be rendered useless. |
To setup a new replacement BCM select Vehicle Control Systems, then navigate to Computer/Integrating Systems, once in the Computer/Integrating Systems menu select Module Replacement/Setup and follow the instructions on the scan tool. After the setup procedure it is necessary to perform the Remote Start setup procedure and brake pedal position (BPP) Sensor Calibration procedure. Refer to the Importants below for further information.
If the BCM fails to accept the program, perform the following steps
- Inspect all BCM connections.
- Verify that the scan tool has the latest software version.
SDM Part Number Learn Procedure
If the SDM is replaced the SDM part number must be learned by the BCM. Using a scan tool navigate to Vehicle Control Systems, Module Setup, Supplemental Inflatable Restraints then select Setup SDM Part Number In BCM. Follow the on screen directions.
| IMPORTANT | After programming, perform the following to avoid future misdiagnosis |
- Turn the ignition OFF for 10 seconds.
- Connect the scan tool to the data link connector.
- Turn the ignition ON with the engine OFF.
- Use the scan tool in order to retrieve history DTCs from all modules.
- Clear all history DTCs.

Each of the following service procedures require programming or setup procedures to be performed on the communication interface module.
Digital Radio Receiver Programming and Setup
Each of the following service procedures requires programming or setup procedures to be performed on the digital radio receiver.
EBCM Reprogramming
If the EBCM needs to be reprogrammed, refer to Service Programming System (SPS) .
Engine Control Module Programming and Setup
The following service procedures require either a programming or a setup event be performed for a complete repair.
ECM Reprogramming
- If the ECM needs to be reprogrammed, refer to «Service Programming System (SPS)»(ref-269146-S32826756042007102900000) .
- Engine Oil Life Remaining-When available, use a scan tool to reset the Engine Oil Life Remaining back to the original percentage recorded before the module was reprogrammed. IMPORTANT: After programming, perform the following to avoid future misdiagnosis
- Turn the ignition OFF for 30 seconds.
- Turn the ignition ON with the engine OFF.
- Use the scan tool in order to retrieve history DTCs from all modules.
- Clear all history DTCs.
Garage Door Opener Programming and Setup
The garage door opener (GDO) programming and setup procedures must be performed after replacement. Refer to Garage Door Opener Programming - Universal on how to program the GDO.
Heated Seat Control Module Programming and Setup
This device requires no programming or setup.
Ignition Control Module Programming and Setup
This module does not require that a programming event or a setup event is performed.
Instrument Cluster Programming and Setup
This device requires no programming or setup.
Power Steering Control Module (PSCM) Setup
After replacing the power steering motor and module assembly the following 3 procedures must be performed. After replacing the steering column assembly only the steering position sensor and the torque sensor calibration procedures must be performed. The steering position sensor and torque sensor calibration procedures should also be performed after a suspension alignment. Certain steering symptoms can be corrected by performing the steering position sensor and torque sensor calibration procedures such as
- Poor, or uneven return to center
- Poor, or uneven on center feel
Steering Tuning Selection
- Install a scan tool.
- Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
- With the scan tool select Special Functions
- Select Steering Tuning Selection and press the enter key. The scan tool screen will flash Selection in Progress, then display Selection Complete.
- Press the exit key.
- Use the scan tool in order to clear any EPS DTCs. IMPORTANT: After turning OFF the ignition, allow 25 seconds of wait time before performing any procedures that require the vehicles battery to be disconnected, or module memory loss may occur.
- Turn OFF the ignition.
Radio Programming and Setup
Each of the following service procedures require programming or setup procedures to be performed on the radio.
Sunroof Motor/Actuator
The sunroof motor/actuator uses sensor inputs to continuously monitor the location of the glass panel and to establish soft stop locations several millimeters ahead of the hard stops (physical limits) of the glass panel. The sunroof motor/actuator includes the sunroof motor, actuator, sensors and the control module. These components are not serviced individually.
Sunroof Motor/Actuator Reprogramming
This component is not re-programmable.
If battery positive voltage or ground is removed and re-installed from the sunroof motor/actuator, the following procedure must be performed in the following order
- Place the ignition switch to the ON position.
- Press and hold the sunroof switch to the OPEN position until the glass panel stops at the rear soft stop position.
- Release the sunroof switch.
- Press and hold the sunroof switch again to the OPEN position for 10 seconds or more. The sunroof will stall at the hard stop position, then move back to the soft stop position.
- Release the sunroof switch.
- Within 6 seconds, press and hold the sunroof switch again to the OPEN position. After 3 more seconds, the glass panel will move toward the close position. Continue pressing the switch until the glass stops at the closed position.
- Release the sunroof switch.
- Verify sunroof operation. Refer to «Sunroof Description and Operation»(ref-269130-S40930598252007102900000) in Roof.
The re-initialization procedure is not complete if one of the following actions occur before the procedure is complete
- The sunroof switch is not held in the OPEN position.
- The ignition switch is turned to the OFF position.
- Battery positive voltage is removed.
- The glass panel did not reach the fully closed position.
Set Up a Theft Deterrent Module (TDM) Using Existing Keys
| IMPORTANT | Use this procedure only if replacing the theft deterrent module (TDM) using the existing vehicle keys. Because of how vehicle key information and theft deterrent passwords are stored within the TDM, the Set Up a New Theft Deterrent Module procedure must be performed prior to the removal and replacement of the TDM if the vehicle keys are being reused. Performing the setup procedure first allows the scan tool to extract the key information and passwords from the old TDM prior to its removal. Failure to perform this step will result in the failure to learn the existing vehicle keys and new vehicle keys will be required when replacing the TDM. Do not use the scan tool for any other programming operations while performing this procedure. Doing so will erase the stored data retrieved from the original TDM and cause the set-up to fail. |
- Perform the 10-Minute Relearn Procedure using the Prepare Module For TDM Setup Procedure calibration. Refer to «10-Minute Relearn Procedure»(ref-269146-S40140103722007102900000) .
- Connect a scan tool to the vehicle.
- Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
- With a scan tool, select TDM in the Vehicle Control Systems Module Replacement/Setup data list.
- Select Step 1.
- Select Use Existing Keys.
- Follow the scan tool on-screen instructions. The scan tool will then display Replace Module Per Service Manual. At this time, replace the theft deterrent module (TDM).
- After the new TDM has been installed, using the scan tool, select Step 2 and follow the on-screen instructions.
Set Up a Theft Deterrent Module (TDM) Using New Keys
| IMPORTANT | Use this procedure only if replacing the TDM using new vehicle keys. |
- Connect a scan tool to the vehicle.
- Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
- With a scan tool, select TDM in the Vehicle Control Systems Module Replacement/Setup data list.
- Select Step 1.
- Select Use New Keys.
- Follow the scan tool on-screen instructions.
10-Minute Relearn Procedure
| IMPORTANT | When performing the 10-minute relearn procedure, all previously learned keys will be erased from the TDM memory. Additional keys may be learned after performing the relearn procedure. Use only a master key when performing the first relearn procedure. If you a valet key is used first, the TDM will not allow additional keys to be learned. |
Use this procedure after replacing any of the following components
- The vehicle keys
- The theft deterrent module (TDM)
- The engine control module (ECM)
| IMPORTANT | When replacing either the vehicle keys, PCM, or TDM and the 10-Minute Relearn Procedure is used, ensure that the appropriate calibration is selected for the replacement component on the calibration selection screen of the service programming system. The appropriate calibrations for specific vehicle theft deterrent (VTD) system components are described below. When preparing a TDM for replacement, the Prepare Module For TDM Setup Procedure calibration is required. This allows the retrieval of required information from the TDM prior to its replacement. When learning vehicle keys and the 10-Minute Relearn Procedure is used, the Vehicle Theft Deterrent Learn For Learning Replacement Keys calibration is required. This clears all previously learned keys from the TDM and enables the TDM to learn new vehicle keys. For learning additional vehicle keys, refer to Adding Keys . When replacing a TDM or ECM and the 10-Minute Relearn Procedure is used, the VTD Learn for Powertrain calibration is required. This clears the previously learned fuel continue password in the ECM and enables the ECM to learn the fuel continue password of the new TDM. |
| IMPORTANT | When replacing a TDM with a GM SPO Replacement Part, insure the Setup a New TDM procedure is performed prior to the 10-Minute Relearn Procedure. |
- Connect a scan tool to the vehicle.
- Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
- Ensure that all power consuming devices are turned OFF on the vehicle.
- With a scan tool, select Request Info. under Service Programming System and follow the scan tool on-screen instructions.
- Disconnect the scan tool from the vehicle and connect the scan tool to a Techline Terminal with the current Service Programming System (SPS) software.
- On the Techline Terminal, select Service Programming System and follow the Techline Terminal on-screen instructions. Ensure the correct programming procedure is selected based on the component being replaced or programmed. See Important above.
- Disconnect the scan tool from the Techline Terminal and re-connect the scan tool to the vehicle.
- With a master vehicle key, turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
- With a scan tool, select Program ECU under Service Programming System.
- At this point the scan tool must remain connected for the duration of the 10-Minute Relearn Procedure. IMPORTANT: The scan tool will initially display 12 Minutes. The first 2 minutes allow the scan tool to initialize the appropriate control module. The remaining 10 minutes is the relearn timer. On some vehicles the security indicator may be illuminated on steady for the duration of the 10-Minute Relearn Procedure.
- Observe the scan tool. After approximately 10 minutes, the scan tool will display Programming Successful, Turn OFF Ignition. The vehicle is now ready to relearn the key information and/or the passwords on the next ignition switch transition from OFF to CRANK.
- Turn OFF the ignition and wait 5 seconds.
- With a master vehicle key, start the vehicle. The TDM has now learned the key transponder information and/or the ECM has now learned the fuel continue password.
- If additional keys are required to be learned, refer to «Adding Keys»(ref-269164-S02534800632007102900000) .
- With a scan tool, clear any DTCs.
| IMPORTANT | Use this procedure only if replacing the theft deterrent module (TDM) using the existing vehicle keys. |

- After the new TDM has been installed, using the scan tool, select Step 2 and follow the on-screen instructions.

- Connect a scan tool to the vehicle.
- Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.

- Disconnect the scan tool from the Techline Terminal and re-connect the scan tool to the vehicle.
- With a master vehicle key, turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
- With a scan tool, select Program ECU under Service Programming System.
- At this point the scan tool must remain connected for the duration of the 10-Minute Relearn Procedure. IMPORTANT: The scan tool will initially display 12 Minutes. 30-Minute Relearn Procedure
Use this procedure after replacing any of the following components
- The PASS-Key III plus keys
- The theft deterrent module (TDM)
- The powertrain control module (PCM)
| IMPORTANT | This procedure is not available on vehicles equipped with EXPORT configured TDMs. When performing the 30-minute relearn procedure, all previously learned keys will be erased from the TDM memory. Additional keys may be learned after performing the relearn procedure. When replacing a TDM with a GM SPO Replacement Part, ensure the procedure to setup a new TDM is performed prior to the 30-Minute Relearn Procedure. |
- With a master vehicle key, turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
- Observe the security indicator. After approximately 10 minutes, the telltale will turn OFF.
- Turn OFF the ignition, and wait 5 seconds.
- Repeat steps 1-3 two more times for a total of 3 cycles or 30 minutes. IMPORTANT: The vehicle learns the key transponder information and/or passwords on the ignition switch transition from OFF to RUN. You must turn the ignition OFF before attempting to start the vehicle.
- With a master vehicle key, start the vehicle. The vehicle has now learned the key transponder information and/or the ECM has now learned the fuel continue password.
- If additional keys are required to be learned, refer to «Adding Keys»(ref-269164-S02534800632007102900000) .
- With a scan tool, clear any DTCs.
Transmission Control Module Programming and Setup
- The transmission control module (TCM) must be programmed with the proper software/calibrations. Ensure that the following conditions exist in order to prepare for TCM programming: The battery is fully charged. The ignition switch is in the RUN position. The Techline equipment cable connection at the data link connector (DLC) is secure.
- Program the TCM using the latest software matching the vehicle. Refer to up-to-date Techline equipment user instructions.
- If the TCM fails to program, proceed as follows: Ensure that the TCM connection is OK. Inspect the Techline equipment for the latest software version. Attempt to program the TCM. If the TCM still cannot be programmed properly, replace the TCM.
Remote Control Door Lock Receiver Programming and Setup
The following procedure must be performed when replacing the remote control door lock receiver module.
