Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the instrument panel compartment latch. Refer to «Instrument Panel Compartment Door Latch Replacement (Cadillac)»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#instrument-panel-trim-and-console-trim) or «Instrument Panel Compartment Door Latch Replacement (Except Cadillac)»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#instrument-panel-trim-and-console-trim) .
  2. Position the instrument panel compartment latch fork bolt in the up position.
  3. Insert the key into the instrument panel compartment lock cylinder.
  4. Rotate the instrument panel compartment lock cylinder clockwise to the 3 o'clock position with the key.
  5. With the key in position, apply a light load and depress the retainer tumbler through the poke hole at the right hand side of the instrument panel compartment latch.
  6. Rotate the key until the instrument panel compartment lock cylinder rotates to about the 5 o'clock position. This will line up the notch at the rear of the instrument panel compartment lock cylinder with the tab in the instrument panel compartment latch housing.
  7. Remove the instrument panel compartment lock cylinder from the instrument panel compartment latch by pulling on the key.

Installation Procedure

  1. Position the instrument panel compartment latch fork bolt in the up position.
  2. Grasp the instrument panel compartment lock cylinder. Depress the rear-most, light-colored tumbler that is flush with the instrument panel compartment lock cylinder surface.
  3. Insert the key. All the tumblers will now stay depressed.
  4. Insert the instrument panel compartment lock cylinder, with the key inserted, into the instrument panel compartment latch housing. Ensure that the front projection pin is at the appropriate 8 o'clock position. The instrument panel compartment lock cylinder will drop into place.
  5. Rotate the key counterclockwise until the key stops.
  6. Remove the key, the tumblers will now release. The instrument panel compartment lock cylinder is now locked into the instrument panel compartment latch housing.
  7. Install the instrument panel compartment latch. Refer to «Instrument Panel Compartment Door Latch Replacement (Cadillac)»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#instrument-panel-trim-and-console-trim) or «Instrument Panel Compartment Door Latch Replacement (Except Cadillac)»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#instrument-panel-trim-and-console-trim) .

J-42640: Steering Column Anti-Rotation Pin

  1. Lock the steering column through the access hole in the steering column shroud using J-42640: Steering Column Anti-Rotation Pin.
  2. Remove the steering shaft coupling nut (1) and bolt (2) at the steering column.
  3. Remove the front seats. Refer to «Front Seat Replacement - Bucket (with HP2)»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/seats/#seat-hardware-seat-trim-and-upholstery) or «Front Seat Replacement - Bucket (without HP2)»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/seats/#seat-hardware-seat-trim-and-upholstery) .
  4. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to «Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/charging-system/#battery-charging-system-and-starting-system) .
  5. Remove the front floor console.   6. Remove the instrument panel outer trim covers.   8. Remove the instrument panel upper trim panel with windshield defroster nozzle grille.   9. Tape the ambient light sensor to the instrument panel upper trim panel to ensure it does not fall behind the instrument panel assembly during reinstallation.
  10. Remove the right and left body hinge pillar trim panel. Refer to «Body Hinge Pillar Trim Panel Replacement»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#interior-trim-system-and-paneling) .
  11. Remove the instrument panel center support bracket.
  12. Note location and routing of the instrument panel wiring harness prior to removal in order to ensure proper installation.
  13. On the right side of the instrument panel perform the following procedures: Disconnect the electrical connections to the instrument panel right electrical center. Disconnect the electrical connection for the instrument panel inflatable restraint module. Disconnect the radio antennas. Release the wire looms securing the wiring harnesses to the right side of the instrument panel.
  14. On the left side of the instrument panel perform the following procedures: Disconnect the electrical connections to the instrument panel left electrical center. Disconnect the ground wires from the upper left cowl panel. Remove the body wiring harness junction block from its bracket to allow movement in the body harness. Release the wire looms securing the wiring harnesses to the left side of the instrument panel.
  15. Remove the 4 bolts (1) securing the instrument panel upper trim panel to the cowl.
  16. Remove the 2 bolts (1) securing the instrument carrier support to the cowl. These bolts are located down inside the instrument panel and can be seen through the windshield.
  17. Remove the 4 bolts (1) releasing the instrument panel assembly from the vehicle.
  18. With the aid of an assistant pull the instrument panel assembly (1) rearward in the vehicle until the locator pin on each side clears the opening.
  19. The person on the right side of the instrument panel should pivot the instrument panel inward toward the center of the vehicle until enough clearance is gained to access the HVAC module.
  20. Set the instrument panel assembly down and adequately support it in order to prevent any damage.
  1. With the aid of an assistant perform the following procedures: Lift the instrument panel assembly (1) up and align the locator pins to the openings in the hinge pillars. Push the instrument panel forward until the instrument panel is in vehicle position.
  2. Loosely install the 4 bolts (1) on the outer ends of the instrument panel.
  3. Loosely install the 2 bolts (1) securing the instrument panel carrier support to the cowl.
  4. Tighten the 6 bolts securing the instrument panel to the vehicle to 22 N.m (16 lb ft).
  5. Install the 4 bolts (1) securing the instrument panel upper trim panel to the cowl and tighten to 9 N.m (80 lb in).
  6. On the left side of the instrument panel perform the following procedures: Connect the wire looms securing the wiring harnesses to the left side of the instrument panel. Install the body wiring harness junction block into its bracket. Connect the ground wires to the upper left cowl panel. Tighten the nut to 9 N.m (80 lb in). Connect the electrical connections to the instrument panel left electrical center.
  7. On the right side of the instrument panel perform the following procedures: Connect the wire looms securing the wiring harnesses to the right side of the instrument panel. Connect the radio antennas. Connect the electrical connection for the instrument panel inflatable restraint module. Connect the electrical connections to the instrument panel right electrical center.
  8. Install the instrument panel center support bracket.
  9. Install the right and left body hinge pillar trim panel. Refer to «Body Hinge Pillar Trim Panel Replacement»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#interior-trim-system-and-paneling) .
  10. Remove the instrument panel upper trim panel with windshield defroster nozzle grille. Refer to «Instrument Panel Upper Trim Panel with Windshield Defroster Nozzle Grille Replacement (Except Cadillac)»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#instrument-panel-trim-and-console-trim) or «Instrument Panel Upper Trim Panel with Windshield Defroster Nozzle Grille Replacement (Cadillac)»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#instrument-panel-trim-and-console-trim) .
  11. Install the windshield pillar garnish moldings. Refer to «Windshield Pillar Garnish Molding Replacement»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/exteriorinterior-trim/#interior-trim-system-and-paneling) .
  12. Install the instrument panel outer trim covers.   13. Install the front floor console.   14. Connect the negative battery cable. Refer to «Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection»(/cadillac/escalade/gmt900-2006-2014/remont/charging-system/#battery-charging-system-and-starting-system) .
  15. Install the front seats.   16. Install the steering shaft coupling nut (1) and bolt (2) at the steering column. Tighten the nut and bolt to 50 N.m (37 lb ft).
  17. Remove the J-42640: Pin from the steering column.

  1. Remove the steering shaft coupling nut (1) and bolt (2) at the steering column.
  2. Remove the front seats. Connect the electrical connections to the instrument panel right electrical center.
  8. Install the instrument panel center support bracket.

3Roof Console Assembly CAUTION: Do not exert downward force at the forward or rearward edge of the roof console assembly as irreversible damage will occur. Procedures Grasp the right and left sides of the roof console assembly where indicated with arrows and pull downward using equal force on each side in order to release the retainer clips securing the overhead console assembly to the headlining assembly. Disconnect the electrical connectors. If replacing roof console assembly, transfer all necessary components.
