Exhaust System - Repair (n54) BMW Z4 E89

18 00 020 Removing and installing complete exhaust system (N54)

WARNINGScalding hazard!

Only perform this work after engine has cooled down.

Risk of injury!

Removal of the exhaust system must be carried out with the assistance of a second person.

Necessary preliminary tasks

  1. Remove «REINFORCEMENT PLATE ON REAR AXLE»(ref-381258-S42242521212010122800000) from rear axle
  2. Remove «LEFT OR RIGHT TENSION STRUT»(ref-381258-S41509880072010122800000) on left and right from rear axle

Support exhaust system with special tool 31 2 220.

Unscrew nuts (1).

Tightening torque 18 31 1AZ .

Installation

Replace seals.

Replace nuts (1).

Unscrew screws (1) and (2).

Tightening torque 18 31 2AZ .

Remove retaining clip.

Picture shows the left side, the procedure for the right side is identical.

Release screw (1) on rubber mount.

Tightening torque 18 31 3AZ .

Slacken nut (1).

Tightening torque 18 31 4AZ .

Pull off vacuum hose (1).

Slacken nut (2).

Tightening torque 18 31 4AZ .

Lower and remove exhaust system with assistance of a second person.

Installation

Check rubber mount for damage.

If necessary, replace damaged rubber mounts.

Check exhaust system for leaks.

18 32 050 Removing and installing/replacing catalytic exhaust-gas converter for cylinders 1-3 (N54)

WARNINGScalding hazard! Only perform these tasks after exhaust system has cooled down.

Necessary preliminary tasks

  1. Remove front «UNDERBODY PROTECTION»(ref-381258-S36346312162010122800000)
  2. Remove rear «UNDERBODY PROTECTION»(ref-381258-S25614082772010122800000)
  3. Remove «EXHAUST SYSTEM»(/bmw/z4/e89-2009-2013/remont/exhaust/#exhaust-system-repair-n54__18-00-020-removing-and-installing)
  4. Release right «TIE ROD»(/bmw/z4/e89-2009-2013/remont/manual-power-steering/#steering-and-wheel-alignment-repair__32-21-231-replacing-removing-and) from steering gear

Note. The oxygen sensors are in danger of being damaged when the catalytic exhaust-gas converters are removed and installed. Remove CONTROL SENSOR , cylinders 1 to 3. Remove MONITOR SENSOR from cylinders 1 to 3.

Release screws (1).

Remove guard plate (2).

Unscrew nuts (1).

Tightening torque 18 20 2AZ .

Release screws and remove holder (1).

Replace aluminium screws.

Tightening torque, manual gearbox 23 00 2AZ .

Release clamp. Clamp must be replaced each time it is released.

Tightening torque 18 31 3AZ .

In so doing, secure catalytic converter (1) against falling out.

Feed out catalytic converter (1) and remove.

Installation

Clean sealing face. Replace seal and clamp.

Align catalytic converter to exhaust system connecting piece and tighten down.

Add final details to vehicle.

Check exhaust system for leaks.

18 32 060 Removing and installing/replacing catalytic exhaust-gas converter for cylinders 4-6 (N54)

WARNINGScalding hazard! Only perform these tasks after exhaust system has cooled down.

Necessary preliminary tasks

  1. Remove «CATALYTIC CONVERTER»(/bmw/z4/e89-2009-2013/remont/exhaust/#exhaust-system-repair-n54__18-32-050-removing-and-installingreplacing) for cylinders 1-3

Note. The oxygen sensors are in danger of being damaged when the catalytic exhaust-gas converters are removed and installed. Remove CONTROL SENSOR , cylinders 4 to 6. Remove MONITOR SENSOR from cylinders 4 to 6.

Release clamp. Clamp must be replaced each time it is released.

Tightening torque 18 31 3AZ .

In so doing, secure catalytic converter (1) against falling out.

Feed out catalytic converter (1) and remove.

Installation

Clean sealing face. Replace seal and clamp.

Align catalytic converter to exhaust system connection flange and tighten down.

Check exhaust system for leaks.

Add final details to vehicle.

18 32 085 Replace both exhaust pipes with catalytic converters (N54)

WARNINGScalding hazard!

Only perform these tasks on an engine that has cooled down.

Support front silencer with special tool 31 2 220 and secure against falling out.

Note. If the cutting line is not marked by a punch mark in the pipe, determine the cutting line by means of the pipe length on the new front silencer.

Carry over cutting line to faulty front silencer and mark.

Cut through exhaust pipes at marked point with a suitable tool.

Unscrew nuts (1).

Tightening torque 18 31 1AZ .

Replace self-locking nuts.

Replace seals.

Release bolt and remove bracket (1).

Tightening torque 18 31 2AZ .

Lower and remove front silencer with assistance of a second person.

Installation

Connect front silencer to rear silencer by means of clamp and align.

Centre clamp and tighten down.

Tightening torque 18 20 3AZ .

Note. Check exhaust system for leaks.

18 10 034 Replacing both rear silencers (N54)

WARNINGScalding hazard!

Only perform these tasks on an engine that has cooled down.

Necessary preliminary tasks

  1. Remove «REINFORCEMENT PLATE ON REAR AXLE»(ref-381258-S42242521212010122800000) from rear axle
  2. Remove «LEFT OR RIGHT TENSION STRUT»(ref-381258-S41509880072010122800000) on left and right from rear axle

Support rear silencer with special tool 31 2 220.

Note. If the cutting line is not marked by a punch mark in the pipe, determine the cutting line by means of the pipe length on the new rear silencer.

Carry over cutting line to faulty rear silencer and mark.

Cut through exhaust pipes at marked point with a suitable tool.

Picture shows the left side, the procedure for the right side is identical.

Release screw (1) on rubber mount.

Tightening torque 18 31 4AZ .

Slacken nut (1).

Tightening torque 18 31 5AZ .

Pull off vacuum hose (1).

Slacken nut (2).

Tightening torque 18 31 5AZ .

Lower and remove rear silencer with assistance of a second person.

Installation

Connect front pipes to rear silencers by means of clamps and align.

Centre clamps and tighten down.

Tightening torque 18 20 3AZ .

Note. Check exhaust system for leaks. Check rubber mount for damage. If necessary, replace damaged rubber mounts.

  4. Release right «TIE ROD»(/bmw/z4/e89-2009-2013/remont/manual-power-steering/#steering-and-wheel-alignment-repair__32-21-231-replacing-removing-and) from steering gear

Note. The oxygen sensors are in danger of being damaged when the catalytic exhaust-gas converters are removed and installed. Remove CONTROL SENSOR , cylinders 1 to 3. Remove MONITOR SENSOR from cylinders 1 to 3.

Release screws (1).

Tightening torque 18 20 2AZ .

Release screws and remove holder (1).

Tightening torque, automatic transmission 24 00 2AZ.

Tightening torque, manual gearbox 23 00 2AZ .

Release clamp. Clamp must be replaced each time it is released.

Tightening torque 18 31 3AZ .

In so doing, secure catalytic converter (1) against falling out.

Feed out catalytic converter (1) and remove.

Installation

Clean sealing face. Replace seal and clamp.

Align catalytic converter to exhaust system connecting piece and tighten down.

Add final details to vehicle.

Check exhaust system for leaks.
