Exhaust System - Repair (n52) BMW Z4 E89

18 00 020 Removing and installing complete exhaust system (N52K)

WARNINGScalding hazard! Only perform this work after engine has cooled down. Danger of injury! Removal of the exhaust system must be carried out with the assistance of a second person.

Necessary preliminary tasks

  1. Remove «REINFORCEMENT PLATE»(/bmw/z4/e89-2009-2013/remont/axle-shafts/#rear-axle-repair__51-71-390-removing-and-installingreplacing) from rear axle
  2. Remove left «TENSION STRUT»(/bmw/z4/e89-2009-2013/remont/axle-shafts/#rear-axle-repair__51-71-482-removing-and-installingreplacing) on rear axle

Support exhaust system with special tool 31 2 220.

Unscrew nuts (1).

Tightening torque 18 31 1AZ .

Remove holder (2).

Installation

Replace seals.

Replace self-locking nuts.

Unscrew screws (1) and (2).

Tightening torque 18 31 2AZ .

Release screw (1) on rubber mount.

Tightening torque 18 31 3AZ .

Slacken nut (1).

Tightening torque 18 31 4AZ .

Lower and remove exhaust system with assistance of a second person.

Installation

Check rubber mount for damage.

If necessary, replace damaged rubber mounts.

Check exhaust system for leaks.

18 12 040 Replacing front silencer (N52K)

WARNINGScalding hazard! Only perform these tasks on an engine that has cooled down.

Support front silencer with special tool 31 2 220.

Note. If the cutting line is not marked by a punch mark in the pipe, determine the cutting line by means of the pipe length on the new front silencer. Carry over cutting line to faulty front silencer and mark. Cut through exhaust pipes at marked point with a suitable tool.

Unscrew nuts (1).

Tightening torque 18 31 1AZ .

Remove holder (2).

Installation

Replace self-locking nuts.

Replace seal.

Unscrew screws (1) and (2).

Tightening torque 18 31 2AZ .

Lower and remove front silencer with assistance of a second person.

Installation

Align front silencer to rear silencer and connect with clamps.

Centre clamp and tighten down.

Tightening torque 18 31 5AZ .

Note. Check exhaust system for leaks.

18 10 031 Replacing rear silencer (N52K)

WARNINGScalding hazard! Only perform these tasks on an engine that has cooled down.

Necessary preliminary tasks

  1. Remove «REINFORCEMENT PLATE»(/bmw/z4/e89-2009-2013/remont/axle-shafts/#rear-axle-repair__51-71-390-removing-and-installingreplacing) from rear axle
  2. Remove left «TENSION STRUT»(/bmw/z4/e89-2009-2013/remont/axle-shafts/#rear-axle-repair__51-71-482-removing-and-installingreplacing) on rear axle

Support rear silencer with special tool 31 2 220.

Note. If the cutting line is not marked by a punch mark in the pipe, determine the cutting line by means of the pipe length on the new rear silencer. Carry over cutting line to faulty rear silencer and mark. Cut through exhaust pipes at marked point with a suitable tool.

Unfasten nut.

Tightening torque 18 31 3AZ .

Slacken nut (1).

Tightening torque 18 31 4AZ .

Lower and remove rear silencer with assistance of a second person.

Installation

Connect front silencer to rear silencer by means of clamp and align.

Centre clamp and tighten down.

Tightening torque 18 31 5AZ .

Note. Check exhaust system for leaks. Check rubber mount for damage. If necessary, replace damaged rubber mounts.

18 40 050 Removing and installing/replacing front exhaust manifold (N52K)

WARNINGRisk of injury! Refrigerant circuit is under high pressure! Follow safety instructions for handling refrigerant See 6450... INSTRUCTIONS FOR HANDLING REFRIGERANT R 134A or 6450... SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS FOR HANDLING REFRIGERANT R134A . Avoid contact with refrigerant and refrigerant oil Follow safety instructions for HANDLING REFRIGERANT OIL .
IMPORTANTRisk of damage! Restart engine only when A/C system has been correctly filled. Follow INSTRUCTIONS for opening and replacing parts in refrigerant circuit. If A/C system is opened for more than 24 hours: Replace DESICCANT INSERT for A/C system.

Necessary preliminary tasks

  1. Remove «REAR EXHAUST MANIFOLD»(/bmw/z4/e89-2009-2013/remont/exhaust/#exhaust-system-repair-n52__18-40-060-removing-and-installingreplacing)
  2. Drain off «AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM»(/bmw/z4/e89-2009-2013/remont/automatic-hvac-system/#heating-and-air-conditioning-repair__64-50-010-drawing-off-evacuating)

Note. The oxygen sensors are in danger of being damaged when the exhaust manifolds are removed and installed.

Remove CONTROL SENSOR from cylinders 1 to 3.

Remove MONITOR SENSOR from cylinders 1 to 3.

Release screws (1).

Tightening torque 64 52 1AZ .

Detach pressure and suction lines from A/C compressor.

Installation

Replace all sealing rings and moisten with refrigerant oil.

Unscrew nuts.

Remove exhaust manifold (1).

Installation

Clean sealing faces and replace seals.

Replace nuts.

Tightening torque 18 40 1AZ .

Assemble engine.

Evacuate and fill A/C SYSTEM .

Check exhaust system for leaks.

18 40 060 Removing and installing/replacing rear exhaust manifold (N52K)

Necessary preliminary tasks

  1. Remove right «TENSION STRUT»(/bmw/z4/e89-2009-2013/remont/axle-shafts/#front-axle-repair__51-71-371-removing-and-installingreplacing)
  2. Remove front «UNDERBODY PROTECTION»(/bmw/z4/e89-2009-2013/remont/axle-shafts/#front-axle-repair__51-47-490-removing-and-installingreplacing)
  3. Remove rear «UNDERBODY PROTECTION»(/bmw/z4/e89-2009-2013/remont/axle-shafts/#rear-axle-repair__51-47-491-removing-and-installingreplacing)
  4. Remove «COMPLETE EXHAUST SYSTEM»(/bmw/z4/e89-2009-2013/remont/exhaust/#exhaust-system-repair-n52__18-00-020-removing-and-installing)

Note. The oxygen sensors are in danger of being damaged when the exhaust manifolds are removed and installed.

Remove CONTROL SENSOR from cylinders 4 to 6.

Remove MONITOR SENSOR from cylinders 4 to 6.

Unscrew nuts.

Remove exhaust manifold (1).

Installation

Clean sealing faces and replace seals.

Replace nuts.

Tightening torque 18 40 1AZ .

Assemble engine.

Check exhaust system for leaks.
