V12 FLUID CAPACITIES

AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID TYPE

Note. Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) was developed especially for automatic transmissions. It requires additives which are carefully matched with each other, a high viscosity index and a solidification point below -40°F (-40°C). Friction behavior of ATF in plate-type clutches under very different operating conditions is extremely important. Other important factors are: Wear protection Oil film shear resistance Adhesive property Oxidation resistance Corrosion inhibition Sludge prevention Temperature-dependent viscosity changes Compatibility with sealing materials

GM Transmissions (A5S360R/390R)

Transmission oil pan will be labeled with either Texaco ETL-7045 or Dexron-III. Fill or top off with proper fluid only. DO NOT mix Texaco ETL-7045 and Dexron-III fluids.

ZF 3HP22, 4HP22 & 4HP24

Transmission identification plate can be utilized to determine proper transmission fitted in vehicle. Transmission utilizes Castrol TQ or Texaco Havoline automatic transmission fluids of the Dexron-III formulation. DO NOT mix any other oil with this transmission fluid when doing repairs or topping off.

A5S325Z (5HP19) & A5S440Z (5HP24)

Transmission identification plate can be utilized to determine proper transmission fitted in vehicle. No subsequent transmission fluid changes are necessary. DO NOT mix any other oil with this transmission fluid when doing repairs or topping off. Use ESSO LT 71141 (BMW Part No. 83229407807).

GA6HP26Z

Transmission identification plate can be utilized to determine proper transmission fitted in vehicle. Transmission fluid has a condition based service interval of approximately 100,000 miles. DO NOT mix any other oil with this transmission fluid when doing repairs or topping off. Use Shell M-1375.4 (BMW Part No. 83220142516).

AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID LEVEL CHECK

Note. Checking fluid level may be necessary if there is evidence of a leak, a complaint related to fluid level, or repairs made to transmission.

Transmission Without Dipstick

To top off transmission after a repair, put selector lever to setting "P". Vehicle must be horizontal and secured to prevent it from rolling away. Unfasten filler screw. Top off automatic transmission using filler neck attached to filler aperture until oil emerges at filler/overflow bore. (Scheme 1) Start engine. Top off automatic transmission again until oil emerges at filler/overflow bore. Screw in filler plug. (Scheme 2) Operate brake and, with engine at idle speed, shift transmission through all gears several times. Connect BMW's GROUP TESTER ONE (GT-1) or DISplus hardware system to vehicle and perform oil level check in accordance with manufacturer's instructions. Replace sealing ring. Tighten drain plug to 11 ft. lbs. (16 N.m).

Service Interval Indication

On all models except 7-series, service interval indicator consists either of colored LED blocks or actual mileage remaining until next service. Service indicator (which displays OIL SERVICE, INSPECTION I or INSPECTION II) can be reset using the reset mode in the instrument cluster. See SERVICE INTERVAL LIGHT RESET (ALL MODELS EXCEPT 7-SERIES) .

The 7-series models use a Condition Based Service (CBS) service interval system, which displays a Service Need Display (SND). When ignition is on, Service Need Display appears under the speedometer in the instrument cluster for 10 seconds in the place where the fuel tank level is normally displayed. The first line corresponds to the mileage dependent service items. It specifies the mileage when the next service is due. If the mileage is exceeded (service overdue), it appears with a minus sign. The second line corresponds to the time dependent service items and is displayed by a clock symbol. It specifies the weeks/months/ years when the next service is due. If the service is overdue, it appears with a minus sign. The actual service item (with additional information) can be viewed in the control display. For 7-series reset procedure, see CONDITION BASED SERVICE (CBS) LIGHT RESET (7-SERIES) . For 7-series service maintenance intervals, see 7-SERIES SERVICE MAINTENANCE CHECKLIST .

Service Interval Light Reset (All Models Except 7-Series)

Reset service light by performing the following

  1. Ignition key must be in OFF position.
  2. Press and hold trip odometer reset button in the instrument cluster (left button), and turn ignition key to first position.
  3. Keep the button pressed for approximately 5 seconds until one of the following words appear in the display: "OIL SERVICE", or "INSPECTION", with "Reset".
  4. Release reset button and press it again until " reset" begins to flash in the display. (Scheme 3)and (Scheme 4).

Service due is shown with "reset" if coded minimum consumption limit has been reached and resetting is possible. If "reset" is not shown, minimum limit has not been reached and resetting is not possible.

  1. While "reset" is flashing, press left button briefly to reset service interval. After display has shown new interval, following will appear: "END SIA".

System can only be reset again after 2.5 gallons of fuel have been consumed.

Condition Based Service (CBS) Light Reset (7-Series)

Service reset is accomplished using instrument cluster. On future models, diagnostic tester will reset indicator

  1. To reset a service, press the reset button on the top left part of instrument cluster for more than 10 seconds with ignition ON. This brings you directly to reset mode.
  2. A menu appears in the speedometer. At the top is the BACK function, then the first 3 service items. (Scheme 5)and (Scheme 6).

Residual wear or remaining time are specified (possibly with a minus sign). The "1" symbol means that you can reset service operation (early production vehicles may show an "F"), while a "0" indicates it is not resettable (the first 20 percent of the service interval is also protected against accidental reset). You can scroll through the service items by pressing the reset button or the lower button (CC button) on turn signal switch. When you have selected a service item, press reset button for more than 2 seconds to display a 2-line menu in tachometer. "Back" function is at top, resettable service item is below. Now select service item with reset button (or CC button) and press and hold reset button again. In a third menu line, further down, system confirms that reset volume was successful. Whole interval for service operation is shown in SERVICE NEED INDICATOR using control display. For additional information about Condition Based Service (CBS), see

RESETTING & CORRECTING CONDITION BASED SERVICE

under PROGRAMMING in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article.
