Necessary preliminary tasks

  1. Move engine hood into service position.
  2. Disconnect battery negative lead.
  3. Remove front splash guard.
  4. Remove reinforcement plate.
  5. Remove exhaust system. See «EXHAUST SYSTEM - REPAIR INSTRUCTIONS»(ref-202191)
  6. Remove transfer box. See «REMOVAL & INSTALLATION»(ref-172780-S06441663312005030300000)
  7. Remove manual or automatic transmission. See «REMOVAL & INSTALLATION - X5 (A5S 360R/390R)»(ref-169548) , «REMOVAL & INSTALLATION - X5 (6HP26Z)»(ref-169576) or «REMOVAL & INSTALLATION - X5 (S5D 280Z)»(ref-170957) .
  8. Remove right output shaft. See «AXLE SHAFTS (FRONT)»(ref-163207-S18935276652004062200000)
  9. Release left output shaft and place to one side. See «AXLE SHAFTS (FRONT)»(ref-163207-S18935276652004062200000)
  10. Drain off coolant and dispose of correctly. See «COOLING SYSTEM - REPAIR INSTRUCTIONS»(ref-202190)
  11. Release A/C compressor and place to one side. See «COMPRESSOR»(ref-202204-S22347954682005102600000) .
  12. Remove alternator drive belt. See «GENERATOR DRIVE BELT 4.4L (N62)»(ref-164172-S23036681242004072700000) .
  13. Remove intake filter housing with air-mass flow sensor. See «INTAKE FILTER & HOSE»(ref-202188-S40359517392005102600000) .
  14. Remove heat exchanger for transmission from radiator.
  15. Remove radiator. See «COOLING SYSTEM - REPAIR INSTRUCTIONS»(ref-202190)
  16. Disconnect engine oil pipes.
  17. Remove windshield washing reservoir.
  18. Remove heater end plate. See «HEATING AND AIR CONDITIONING - REPAIR INSTRUCTIONS»(ref-202204)

Secure starter motor (1) with transmission screw (2) against falling out.

Disconnect fuel feed line from injection pipe and seal hose ends with special tool 13 5 281 and special tool 13 5 282.

IMPORTANTCatch and dispose of escaping fuel. Observe country-specific waste-disposal regulations.

Unfasten hose clip (1).

Detach heater return hose (2).

Unfasten hose clip (1).

Detach vacuum line (2) from vacuum pump.

Unclip vacuum line (2) from bracket (3).

Detach vacuum line (1) from bracket (2) and lay to one side.

Unlock and detach tank venting valve (3).

Disconnect wiring harness section for engine in control unit box and place on engine.

Disconnect positive lead from battery connection point and place one engine.

Pull out wiring harness section for transmission and oxygen sensors and place on engine.

Note. To remove and install engine with exhaust manifold, you must remove partition wall (3).

Preliminary tasks are described in Disassembling and assembling cylinder head .

Press special tool 11 6 370 onto valve stem seal.

Withdraw valve stem seal by turning and simultaneously unscrewing special tool 11 6 370.

Installation

Lubricate valve stem with oil and insert valve.

Fit special tool 11 1 380.

Coat new valve stem seal (1) with oil and install.

Note. For use on the N62 engine, special tool 11 6 380 must be remachined in accordance with the illustration with a 6.2 mm dia. drill bit to a depth of A = approx. 45 mm.

This modification has already been taken into account for reordering.

Press on valve stem seal with special tool 11 6 380 by hand as far as it will go.

Note. To check the engine oil pressure, the oil pressure switch must be removed and the special tools installed and connected.

Note. A small amount of oil will emerge when the oil pressure switch is removed. Have a cleaning cloth ready.

Make sure no oil runs onto belt drive.

Remove any remnants of oil immediately with cleaning cloth.

Remove oil pressure switch.

Installation

Tightening torque, see ENGINE - TIGHTENING TORQUES .

Install special tool 11 4 050 with sealing ring (1) in place of oil pressure switch.

Check engine oil pressure with DIS Tester

Attach special tool 13 6 054 with sealing ring (1) and special tool 13 6 051 and connect to DIS Tester.

Check engine oil pressure with pressure gauge

Install special tool 13 3 063 and special tool 13 3 061 (pressure gauge).

Start engine and check engine oil pressure.

Specified value.
