VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION

CAUTIONDisconnecting vehicle battery will cancel fault codes of control units. On vehicles with radio codes, after disconnecting battery, radio codes must be re-entered. Obtain radio code card from customer. Note stored stations and restore then after connecting battery. Also, where applicable, initialize sunroof and set steering angle.

AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION

CAUTIONUse only the approved transmission fluid in this automatic transmission. Failure to comply with this requirement will result in serious damage to the automatic transmission. Catch and dispose properly escaping transmission fluid.

Note. For filling and servicing, see SERVICING - A/T .

Note. Numbers in text refer to numbers in figures.

  1. Disconnect battery.
  2. Remove front underbody protection. Remove reinforcement plate. (Scheme 191)
  3. Remove exhaust system as necessary to remove transmission. See EXHAUST article.
  4. Remove heat shield.
  5. Unfasten screws and remove front propeller shaft at transfer box and tie to one side. See FRONT DRIVE SHAFT article.
  6. Supporting engine and transmission: install Special Tool (11 0 250) between dome cross-brace and engine suspension eye and secure with dowel pin. (Scheme 192) Pretension special tool with adjusting screw (1) to measurement "A". Installation position, measurement "A" = 36 cm.
  7. Remove propeller shaft from transmission. See «DRIVE SHAFTS & UNIVERSAL JOINTS»(/bmw/x3/e83-2003-2006/remont/driveshaft-universal-joints/#propeller-shaft-removal-installation) article. Release center bearing. Tie propeller shaft to one side.
  8. Grip clamping sleeve (1) and loosen selector lever nut (2). (Scheme 193)
  9. Release screws (1). (Scheme 194) Remove holder with shift cable (2).
  10. Unscrew bolt (1). (Scheme 195) Disconnect hydraulic lines (2) to transmission fluid cooler.
  11. Release screw (1) on engine carrier. (Scheme 196) Lay hydraulic lines to one side.
  12. Lift off cover. (Scheme 197)
  13. Crank engine at vibration damper in direction of rotation until screw is visible in opening. (Scheme 198) Release all screws of torque converter with Special Tool (24 1 110). Crank engine further and release remaining 2 screws.
  14. Protect torque converter from slipping out. To do so, insert Special Tools (24 4 131 / 24 4 137) in opening in transmission housing. Clamp torque converter. (Scheme 199)
  15. Unfasten screws and remove cross member. (Scheme 200)
  16. Detach plugs (1) and (2) from servomotor. (Scheme 201)
  17. Unlock plug (1) and remove. (Scheme 202) Unclip cable from transmission housing.
  18. Lowering transmission: turn Special Tool (11 0 250) back with adjusting screw (1) to measurement "A". (Scheme 192) Transmission removal position, measurement "A" = approx. 34 cm.
  19. Support transmission with Special Tools (00 2 030 / 24 5 301 / 24 5 305). (Scheme 203)
  20. Unscrew bolt (1) (Scheme 204)
  21. Unfasten screws. (Scheme 205) Pull transmission of engine towards rear and lower.

CAUTIONOil cooler and lines must always be flushed before a replacement transmission is installed.
CAUTIONWhen joining up engine and transmission, ensure ease of movement of torque converter.
  1. If replacing transmission, fit shift lever, brackets for cables and retainers from old transmission to new transmission.
  2. Check dowel sleeves (1) and (2) for correct seating. (Scheme 206) Replace damaged dowel sleeves.
  3. The sheet metal flywheel is equipped with three recesses for the torque converter retaining tabs. (Scheme 207) When guiding the engine and transmission together the three mounting tabs on the torque converter must be aligned with the three indentations in the sheet metal flywheel. Non-conformance leads to follow-up damage on the automatic transmission. Turning on the torque converter, or engine, is no longer possible after guiding the engine and transmission together and would lead to damage.
  4. Before joining transmission with engine, remove Special Tools (24 4 131 / 24 4 137).
  5. Tighten transmission-to-engine screws to specification. (Scheme 205) See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/bmw/x3/e83-2003-2006/remont/automatic-trans/#removal-installation-a5s-360r390r__torque-specifications).
  6. Tighten guard bolt to specification. (Scheme 204) See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/bmw/x3/e83-2003-2006/remont/automatic-trans/#removal-installation-a5s-360r390r__torque-specifications).
  7. Before installing transmission cross-member, turn Special Tool (11 0 250) back with adjusting screw (1) to measurement "A" (installation position). (Scheme 192) Installation position, measurement "A" = approx. 36 cm. Tighten cross-member screws to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/bmw/x3/e83-2003-2006/remont/automatic-trans/#removal-installation-a5s-360r390r__torque-specifications).
  8. Tighten torque converter-to-flywheel screws to specification. (Scheme 198) See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/bmw/x3/e83-2003-2006/remont/automatic-trans/#removal-installation-a5s-360r390r__torque-specifications).
  9. Replace sealing rings on hydraulic lines.
  10. Install nut for selector lever cable to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/bmw/x3/e83-2003-2006/remont/automatic-trans/#removal-installation-a5s-360r390r__torque-specifications).
  11. Grip clamping sleeve (1). (Scheme 208) Slacken nut (2). Press selector lever (3) forwards into park position. Press cable (4) in direction of arrow and release again. Grip clamping sleeve (1). Tighten down nut (2) to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/bmw/x3/e83-2003-2006/remont/automatic-trans/#removal-installation-a5s-360r390r__torque-specifications). Check whether parking gear is engaged by turning propeller shaft.
  12. Install propeller shaft. See «DRIVE SHAFTS & UNIVERSAL JOINTS»(/bmw/x3/e83-2003-2006/remont/driveshaft-universal-joints/#propeller-shaft-removal-installation) article.
  13. Install front propeller shaft and tighten fasteners to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/bmw/x3/e83-2003-2006/remont/automatic-trans/#removal-installation-a5s-360r390r__torque-specifications).
  14. To install reinforcement plate, torque screws (2) to specification. (Scheme 191) See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/bmw/x3/e83-2003-2006/remont/automatic-trans/#removal-installation-a5s-360r390r__torque-specifications).
  15. After completion of work, check transmission fluid level. Top up if necessary.
