INTERLOCK CABLE

Note. Numbers in text refer to numbers in figures.

Move selector lever (1) to "P" position (front stop of shifting gate.) (Scheme 314)

Loosen screw (4). It must be possible to move cable (2) slightly in holder (3).

Move ignition key to "zero" position and remove.

Press interlock locking pawl (5) downward as far as it will go. Tighten screw (4).

To check interlock adjustment

  1. Turn ignition key to "ignition" position and then "0" position.
  2. Interlock locking pawl (1) must rest (3) on shift tower (2). (Scheme 315)
  3. If necessary, adjust interlock cable again.

Removal & Installation

Remove complete exhaust system. See EXHAUST SYSTEM.

Remove heat shield.

Remove transmission crossmember. See MANUAL TRANSMISSION or 2004-05 AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION article.

Unfasten bolts and remove clamp (1). Lower transmission. Ensure engine does not rest against bulkhead as there is a risk of damage. (Scheme 316)

Detach knob with a firm tug. (Scheme 317) Do not turn knob when detaching as this will shear off the turning lock in the knob. During installation, fit knob on selector lever, align and press on until it snaps noticeably into place.

Press installation frame of rubber gaiter (1) together a little and remove rubber gaiter (1) from center console. (Scheme 318)

During installation, feed rubber gaiter (1) downward and fit on selector lever (2). Pull rubber gaiter (1) over selector lever and insert in center console. (Scheme 319)

During installation, push rubber gaiter (1) down until groove (2) is fully exposed. (Scheme 320)

Remove soundproofing (1). (Scheme 321)

Lever out fixture (1) in direction of arrow. Remove shims (3). Pull selector rod (2) in direction of arrow. During installation, grease selector rod pin. Make sure shims (3) are in correct position. (Scheme 322)

Insert special tool (25 1 120) in mounting and turn 90 degrees counterclockwise. Press mount upward out of selector arm. (Scheme 323)

Remove rubber gaiter from body cutout and lift out with selector lever. (Scheme 324)

During installation, insert rubber gaiter with arrow in direction of travel toward front. (Scheme 325)

During installation, grease selector lever ball. Install selector lever in selector arm. (Scheme 326) Align mount with arrows on mount in longitudinal axis of vehicle and retaining lugs of mount, transverse to direction of travel.

During installation, press mount in area of retaining lugs into selector arm until it audibly snaps into place. (Scheme 327)

During installation, pull inner rubber gaiter over bowl on selector arm and press outer rubber gaiter into body cutout. (Scheme 328)

BEARING SHELL FOR SHIFT LEVER

Remove shift lever. See SHIFT LEVER. Detach mount from selector lever. Grease ball joint. (Scheme 329)

SHIFT LEVER GRIP/KNOB

Note. Numbers in text refer to numbers in figures.

Do not twist knob during removal as this would cause the turning lock in the knob to shear off. Tug firmly to remove knob. (Scheme 317) During installation, fit knob on selector lever, align and press on until it snaps noticeably into place. Push rubber gaiter (1) down until groove (2) is fully exposed. (Scheme 320)

SHIFT LEVER COVER (GAITER)

Remove SHIFT LEVER KNOB. The method for removing the gaiter is the same for manual and automatic transmissions. Carefully pull gaiter (1) taut on leather. Press frame (2) inwards slightly until catch is released. Lift out gaiter (3). (Scheme 330) During installation, retaining lugs must not be damaged. (Scheme 331)

SHIFT ROD JOINT

Remove complete exhaust system. See EXHAUST SYSTEM. Remove heat shield. Remove transfer case. See TRANSFER CASE. Lift off retainer (1). Disconnect shift rod (2). During installation, grease shift rod. Make sure shims (3) are in correct position. (Scheme 332)

Lever spring washer (1) out of groove and push a little toward rear. Press dowel pin (2) upward/downward out of shift rod joint and remove shift rod joint. During installation, grease ball of selector shaft. Replace spring washer (1). (Scheme 333)

During installation, check rubber ring (1) in shift rod joint (2) and replace if necessary. (Scheme 334)

SHIFT ARM FOR SHIFT LEVER MOUNT

Remove shift lever. See SHIFT LEVER. Unlock bearing pin (1) in direction of arrow and remove. (Scheme 335) Pull shift arm forwards out of rubber mount. NOTE: During installation, grease bearing pin and bearing journal. Replace bearing bushing if damaged. (Scheme 336)

BEARING BUSHINGS FOR SHIFT ARM

Note. Numbers in text refer to numbers in figures.

Press out bearing bushing (1). Coat new bearing bushing (1) with Circolight lubricant and then press into shift arm until side edges of bushing protrude uniformly. (Scheme 336)

SHIFT ARM SUPPORT

Note. Numbers in text refer to numbers in figures.

Remove complete exhaust system. See EXHAUST SYSTEM.

Remove heat shield.

Remove propeller shaft from transfer case at rear. See TRANSFER CASE .

Release center bearing. Tie propeller shaft to one side.

Lever support bearing (1) with a short screwdriver out of mounting. (Scheme 337)

Pull support off shift arm.

During installation, grease bearing pin of shift arm.

During installation, fit support bearing (1) with opening (2) toward top rear onto mounting. (Scheme 338)

SHIFT TOWER (STEPTRONIC)

Remove instrument panel trim. See INSTRUMENT PANELS. Move selector lever to "P" position. Grip clamping sleeve (1) and slacken out (2). (Scheme 339)

Brace cable (3) on hex head (1) and loosen nut (2). (Scheme 340)

Release screws. Pull cable (2) out of holder. (Scheme 341)

Disconnect plugs (1) and (2). Unscrew bolt (3). Slide interlock cable (4) down using a screwdriver (5) from shaft of interlock locking pawl toward left. NOTE: During installation, adjust interlock cable and check interlock function. (Scheme 342)

Release screws (1). Feed sleeve (2) out of body and remove shift tower. (Scheme 343)

To install, insert rubber seal (1) of shift cable (2) in transmission tunnel (3). (Scheme 344)

SELECTOR LEVER

Detach mount from selector lever. (Scheme 329) During installation, grease ball joint. Detach rubber gaiter from selector lever. (Scheme 345) During installation, degrease selector lever (1). Coat rubber bellows on inside of shaped section (2) with Circolight lubricant. Pull rubber gaiter from above over selector lever and align. Arrow (3) on rubber gaiter must point in direction of travel (A). (Scheme 346)
