The engine number (engine code and serial number) can be found at the joint between the engine and transmission (arrow).
There is also a sticker on the cylinder head cover showing the "engine code" and "serial number".
The engine code is also included on the vehicle data sticker.
Note. The engine code is additionally marked at the engine lifting eye (right side).
Engine oil, general information
The engine is filled at the factory with a high quality multi-grade oil that can be used all year round, except in extremely cold climates.

Scheme 95
- Hand operated vacuum pump V.A.G 1390
Requirements
- Vacuum hoses and hose connections do not leak
- Vacuum hoses are not clogged
Work sequence
- Move electrical wire (arrow) clear.
- Loosen hose clips -1- and -2- and remove air hose between air cleaner housing and Throttle valve control module -J338-.
- Disconnect vacuum hose at combination valve.
Scheme 96
- Connect hand vacuum pump V.A.G 1390 to vacuum connection of combination valve.
- Disconnect secondary air hose at position marked with an arrow.
- Blow gently into hose for combination valve (do not use compressed air).
- Combination valve must be closed; blowing through must not be possible
- Operate hand vacuum pump.
- Combination valve should open; it should now be possible to blow through hose
If the combination valve does not open
- Replace combination valve. Refer to «Combination valve for secondary air system, removing and installing»(ref-276269-S39915998252008010300000) .
