Draining Off Gear Oil & Changing Gear Oil Filter
Change gear oil filter. See GEAR OIL FILTER .
Drive vehicle onto a four-column lifting platform or over an inspection pit in order for it to be absolutely horizontal.
Remove center sound insulation fasteners. see scheme 7
Place drip tray V.A.G1306 under transmission.
| CAUTION | Wear safety goggles. Wear protective gloves (acid resistant). |
Remove drain plug - A -. see scheme 8
Drain gear oil.
Replace seal - arrow - for drain plug. see scheme 10
Install drain plug - A - . Tightening torque: 45 Nm.
Remove inspection plug - B - .
| CAUTION | The filler hose, funnel and adapter VAS6262 must be clean; the gear oil must not be mixed with any other oil types. The engine must not be started if significant oil loss has occurred (e.g. during repairs) and there is little or no gear oil left in the transmission. In this case, you must pre-fill the transmission with gear oil with the engine cold and not running. |
An overflow pipe - C - is screwed into the opening of the inspection plug. (Scheme 76)

Remove overflow pipe - C -.
Drain off remaining gear oil.

Drive vehicle onto a four-column hoist or over an inspection pit in order for it to be absolutely horizontal.

| CAUTION | When working close to the radiator always maintain a safe distance from the fan - danger of injury! The fan may switch on automatically. |
Place drip tray V.A.G1306 under transmission.
| CAUTION | Wear safety goggles. Wear protective gloves (acid resistant). |
Remove drain plug - A -. see scheme 13
Screw in plug - A - again. Tighten to 60 Nm.
Fill up bevel box with new oil. See BEVEL BOX, REFILLING WITH NEW GEAR OIL .
