Subframe, removing and installing

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Scheme 904

Scheme 904: Subframe, removing and installing
  1. Engine/transmission jack V.A.G1383A with universal mount V.A.G1359/2
  1. Torque wrench V.A.G1332, measuring range 40 to 200 Nm

Removing

  1. Remove wheels.
  1. Remove noise insulation panel.
  2. If necessary, detach bracket for hydraulic line at subframe (left-side). Tightening torque: 3.5 Nm.
  3. If installed, detach headlight range control linkage on left side of inner transverse link --> «Vehicle level sensor in vehicles with automatic headlight range control»(/audi/tt/8n-1998-2003/remont/differentials-drive-axles/#suspension-wheels-steering__vehicle-level-sensor-in-vehicles-with) .
  1. Secure tie rods to suspension struts using tensioning straps T10038 (apply straps next to inner rubber boots). This will prevent the steering column from slipping off from steering gear splines during the next step.

Scheme 905

Scheme 905
  1. Remove nut for coupling rod from stabilizer bar.
  2. Remove Torx socket head bolt for noise insulation panel.
  1. Mark positions of nuts.
  2. Remove bottom nuts from ball joint.
  3. Remove diagonal strut (if installed) «Diagonal member for subframe»(/audi/tt/8n-1998-2003/remont/differentials-drive-axles/#suspension-wheels-steering) .
  1. Remove steering gear bolts - 1 - and pendulum support - 2 -.
  2. For vehicles with 165 kW engine (code: APX), remove rubber mounting at front exhaust pipe.
  3. Apply engine/transmission jack V.A.G1383A with universal mount 1359/2 under subframe.
  4. Remove bolts - 3 - and - 4 - for subframe.
  1. If necessary, remove hex nut for securing clamp on stabilizer bar clip (left-side). Tightening torque: 22 Nm
  1. Carefully pry subframe for steering gear from main subframe using a tire iron or similar.

Pay attention to side noise insulation panel and bracket for hydraulic line (left-side) when lowering subframe.

  1. Carefully lower subframe.

When installing, note the following points

Before inserting subframe bolts, position steering gear on subframe and insert bolts for steering gear.

Threaded sleeve - 1 - must be seated in hole in subframe.

Commercially available ring insert tools (18 mm), e.g. Stahlwille 732/10 or Hazet 6630c-18, can be used instead of V.A.G1332/10.

1 - Internal Torx T40

  1. Insert ball joint in wheel bearing housing.
  1. Install new self-locking nut, and counterhold with internal Torx T40.

Note. Make sure sealing boot is free of damage and not twisted.

Tightening torques
Ball joint to control arm (use new nuts)75 Nm
Pendulum support to transmission M10 x 7050 Nm
Pendulum support to transmission M10 x 3050 Nm
Pendulum support to subframe25 Nm
Steering gear to subframe (use new bolts)20 Nm + 90°
Coupling rod to stabilizer bar (use new nuts)90 Nm
Subframe to body (use new bolts)100 Nm + 90°

After installation, check position of steering wheel by test-driving vehicle.

Wheel alignment must be checked and adjusted if steering wheel is not straight.
