  1. Open tailgate and pull out adjuster stop by one notch.
  2. Tighten clamping screw -2- to 2 Nm.
  3. To remove adjuster stop, drill out head from pop rivet -1- and knock shank out. Now take out adjuster stop.
  4. Close tailgate.
  1. Check panel gaps as shown. Refer to «Panel gaps»(/audi/tt/8n-1998-2003/remont/door-locks-anti-theft-systems/#body-exterior) .

Scheme 18

Scheme 18: Disengaging and engaging cable
  1. Rear lid lock removed.
  2. Turn cable in support bracket 90 ° and take out upward.
  3. Swivel cable 90 ° and take out of tailgate lock.

Scheme 19

Scheme 19: Rear lid hinge cover
  1. First lever out cover -1- at the bottom, then detach from tailgate -2-.
  2. When installing cover, start by engaging notches at the top -arrow- on roof flange.

Scheme 20

  1. Unscrew hexagon bolts -4- and remove tailgate -1-.
  2. Unscrew hexagon bolt -3- and hexagon nut -5-, then remove tailgate hinge -2-.

Scheme 21

Scheme 21: Gas-filled strut, removing and installing
  1. Using a screwdriver, push back retaining springs -4- slightly at both ends of the gas-filled strut -1- and unclip gas-filled strut.

Note. When removing or installing gas-filled strut, push back the tailgate -3- slightly past the fully open position without damaging components.

Installing

Note. If gas-filled strut is removed completely, note correct position when re-installing: Tube end goes toward body of vehicle.

  1. Clip in gas-filled strut at bottom first, then at top.
  2. To install, just press gas-filled strut onto ball studs.

Tightening torque for ball stud: 15 Nm -1 Nm

Releasing gas from strut

  1. Clamp gas-filled strut in vice in area x = 50 mm.
  2. Make a saw-cut in the cylinder part of the strut at a point within the first third of the cylinder's length (measured from the piston rod end of the cylinder).
WARNINGThe gas-filled strut must only be clamped in the vice at the area indicated, otherwise there is a risk of accident.

Note. Wear protective goggles when sawing open the cylinder, and cover the area around the saw-cut with a cleaning rag to catch any escaping fluid.
