Disassembling and assembling sequence

  1. Check whether a coded radio is installed. If so, obtain anti-theft code.
  2. Shift selector lever into position "D".
  3. With ignition switched off disconnect battery Ground strap.
  4. Remove selector lever handle. Refer to «Selector lever handle, removing and installing»(/audi/tt/8n-1998-2003/remont/driveshaft-universal-joints/#6-speed-automatic-transmission-09g-fwd__selector-lever-handle-removing-and-installing) .
  1. Remove rear center console.

  1. Disconnect connector -1- of printed circuit board.
  2. Remove connector from hole (arrow) in bracket -2-.

  1. Disconnect connector (arrow) for shift lock solenoid.

  1. At four hooks (arrows) carefully bend frame outward with a screwdriver and remove together with retaining ring, printed circuit board and cover -A-.
  2. Move selector lever to position "P".

  1. Disengage locking cable -1- from locking lever at shift mechanism. Refer to «Locking cable, removing and installing»(/audi/tt/8n-1998-2003/remont/driveshaft-universal-joints/#6-speed-automatic-transmission-09g-fwd__locking-cable-removing-and-installing) .
  2. Unscrew 2 nuts for front shift mechanism mounting (arrows).

  1. Loosen clamp -4- and disconnect intake hose and connector -1- from Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor.
  2. If present, disconnect hose -5- from air cleaner housing.
  3. Unscrew bolts -2- and -3-, then remove the entire air cleaner housing.
  1. Pry off selector lever cable -1- from lever/selector shaft -3-, e.g. with an open-end wrench -2- (10 mm A/F).
  2. Press catches on support bracket of selector lever cable together (arrows) and pull selector lever cable out of support bracket/transmission.

  1. Disengage selector lever cable -1- from clip (arrow) at transmission.
  2. Raise vehicle.

  1. Disconnect front exhaust pipe -A
  1. Remove cross-piece -B- underneath exhaust system.
  2. Remove protective plates -C- and -D-.

  1. Unscrew shift mechanism from body (arrows -B-). Do not loosen nuts (arrows -A-).
  2. Remove shift mechanism with selector lever cable downward.

Installation is in reverse order. Note the following

The tightening torques of bolts/nuts and information on whether new bolts/nuts must be installed can be found in Assembly overview (Removing and installing shift mechanism) and Shift mechanism, disassembling and assembling (Disassembling and assembling shift mechanism).

  1. Insert selector lever cable in support bracket/transmission and carefully press onto lever/selector shaft. Do not bend lever/selector shaft, otherwise it will no longer be possible to precisely adjust selector mechanism.

Note. Do not bend or kink selector lever cable.

  1. Engage selector lever cable -1- in clip (arrow) at transmission. When routing selector lever cable to ATF cooler, maintain a minimum clearance of 5 mm.
  2. Assemble exhaust system
  1. Adjust locking cable. Refer to «Locking cable, adjusting»(/audi/tt/8n-1998-2003/remont/driveshaft-universal-joints/#6-speed-automatic-transmission-09g-fwd__locking-cable-adjusting) .
  2. Check function of ignition key removal lock. Refer to «Function of ignition key removal lock, checking»(/audi/tt/8n-1998-2003/remont/driveshaft-universal-joints/#6-speed-automatic-transmission-09g-fwd__function-of-ignition-key-removal-lock) .
  3. Install rear center console
  1. Install selector lever handle. Refer to «Selector lever handle, removing and installing»(/audi/tt/8n-1998-2003/remont/driveshaft-universal-joints/#6-speed-automatic-transmission-09g-fwd__selector-lever-handle-removing-and-installing) .
  2. Reconnect Ground strap to battery.
  3. Adjust selector lever cable. Refer to «Selector lever cable, checking and adjusting»(/audi/tt/8n-1998-2003/remont/driveshaft-universal-joints/#6-speed-automatic-transmission-09g-fwd__selector-lever-cable-checking-and-adjusting) .
  4. Check shift mechanism. Refer to «Shift mechanism, checking»(/audi/tt/8n-1998-2003/remont/driveshaft-universal-joints/#6-speed-automatic-transmission-09g-fwd__shift-mechanism-checking) .
  1. Enter radio code.

Note. Lubricate mountings and sliding surfaces with polycarbamide grease, Part number G 052 142 A2.

1 - Handle for selector lever

  1. Removing and installing. Refer to «Selector lever handle, removing and installing»(/audi/tt/8n-1998-2003/remont/driveshaft-universal-joints/#6-speed-automatic-transmission-09g-fwd__selector-lever-handle-removing-and-installing)

2 - Sleeve

  1. Engages in selector lever handle
  2. Disables removal of selector lever handle

3 - Bolt, 4 Nm

  1. Qty. 8

4 - Retaining ring

5 - Upper cover

  1. With symbol insert
  2. Fit on guides of frame. Refer to arrows in Item - 8 - «Shift mechanism, disassembling and assembling»(/audi/tt/8n-1998-2003/remont/driveshaft-universal-joints/#6-speed-automatic-transmission-09g-fwd) .

6 - Side cover

  1. Fit on guides of frame. Refer to arrows in Item - 8 - «Shift mechanism, disassembling and assembling»(/audi/tt/8n-1998-2003/remont/driveshaft-universal-joints/#6-speed-automatic-transmission-09g-fwd) .

7 - Circuit board

  1. With integrated Tiptronic switch -F189
  2. Removing and installing. Refer to «Tiptronic switch -F189-, removing and installing»(/audi/tt/8n-1998-2003/remont/driveshaft-universal-joints/#6-speed-automatic-transmission-09g-fwd__tiptronic-switch-f189-removing-and-installing)
  3. Installation position. See «Installation position of printed circuit board»(/audi/tt/8n-1998-2003/remont/driveshaft-universal-joints/#6-speed-automatic-transmission-09g-fwd__installation-position-of-printed-circuit-board) .
  4. Can be checked using VAS 5051 in Guided fault-finding
  1. Can only be replaced after removal of rear center console

8 - Frame

  1. With screen
  2. Can only be replaced after removal of rear center console

9 - Selector lever cable

  1. Do not bend or kink
  2. If protective sleeve is damaged, selector lever cable must be replaced
  3. Checking and installing. Refer to «Selector lever cable, checking and adjusting»(/audi/tt/8n-1998-2003/remont/driveshaft-universal-joints/#6-speed-automatic-transmission-09g-fwd__selector-lever-cable-checking-and-adjusting)
  4. Removing and installing. Refer to «Selector lever cable, removing and installing»(/audi/tt/8n-1998-2003/remont/driveshaft-universal-joints/#6-speed-automatic-transmission-09g-fwd__selector-lever-cable-removing-and-installing)
  1. Do not lubricate cable eye and ball socket

10 - Locking plate

  1. For selector lever cable at bearing cup
  2. Always replace

11 - Self-locking nut, 10 Nm

  1. For cover at mounting bracket
  2. Qty. 4
  3. Always replace

12 - Cover

  1. For mounting bracket
  2. With bonded-on gasket

13 - Bolt

  1. 15 - Locking pawl

  1. For selector lever lock
  2. Engages in cable lever of mounting bracket

16 - Pivot pin

  1. For locking pawl

17 - Shift lock solenoid -N110

  1. Can be replaced with shift mechanism installed
  2. Removing and installing. Refer to «Shift lock solenoid, removing and installing»(/audi/tt/8n-1998-2003/remont/driveshaft-universal-joints/#6-speed-automatic-transmission-09g-fwd__shift-lock-solenoid-removing-and-installing)
  3. Can be checked using VAS 5051 in Guided fault-finding

18 - Locking cable

  1. For ignition key removal lock
  2. Must not be kinked

  4. Adjusting. Refer to «Locking cable, adjusting»(/audi/tt/8n-1998-2003/remont/driveshaft-universal-joints/#6-speed-automatic-transmission-09g-fwd__locking-cable-adjusting)
  1. Check function of ignition key removal lock. Refer to «Function of ignition key removal lock, checking»(/audi/tt/8n-1998-2003/remont/driveshaft-universal-joints/#6-speed-automatic-transmission-09g-fwd__function-of-ignition-key-removal-lock) .

19 - Mount

  1. Removing and installing. Refer to «Assembly overview»(/audi/tt/8n-1998-2003/remont/driveshaft-universal-joints/#6-speed-automatic-transmission-09g-fwd)

  1. Installation position: Install clamp from above. Angled ends of clamp point toward steering lock
