BACKREST ADJUSTMENT CABLE, ADJUSTING

Special tools and workshop equipment required

1. Feeler gauge, commercially available (0.5 mm to 1 mm)

Install backrest adjustment lever cable -1-. Refer to BACKREST ADJUSTMENT LEVER CABLE .

Scheme 144

Loosen clip -4- from adjustment nut -2-.

Place a feeler gauge -6- 0.5 mm thick between stop -5- and backrest adjustment lever -7-.

Then install adjustment nut -2- on screw -3- until control cable -1- is free of tension and there is slack in the cable.

Check whether the backrest engages in the zero position again by releasing it several times.

Then check play -a- which must be between 0.5 and 1 mm.

SEAT HEIGHT ADJUSTMENT HANDLE

Removing

Note. To remove, cover -3- on rear side of seat height adjuster handle -1- must be unclipped. Bring seat height adjuster handle into highest position and then pull it slightly away from seat trim.

Carefully pry cover -3- off with a small screwdriver, beginning at cut-out -arrow A-.

Then carefully pry cover -3- in area between -arrow B- and -arrow C- from seat height adjuster handle -1-.

2 - Guide

Remove seat height adjuster handle -1-.

Installation

Note. Do not unclip seat height adjuster handle -1- with cover -2- before installing on seat under any circumstances.

Carry out pre-assembly of seat height adjuster handle -1- and cover -2-.

Scheme 146

When pre-assembling, maintain a gap dimension -a- of 2 to 3 mm.

Place the pre-assembled seat height adjuster handle on the bracket on the front seat.

Clip in seat height adjuster handle with cover.

SEAT FORWARD/BACK ADJUSTMENT HANDLE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING

Removing

Move the front seat all the way forward.

Tip seat with console back FRONT SEAT .

Remove the bolt -1-.

Installation

Install in reverse order of removal.

FRONT SEAT IN CASE OF A FAULTY CONTROL MODULE OR SEAT FORWARD/BACK ADJUSTMENT MOTOR

Note. Move the seat up if possible. Seat is shown without upholstery and without backrest in picture for the sake of a better illustration.

Removing

Remove the bolt -3-.

Scheme 148

Disconnect screw -4- and nut -6- at threaded connection.

Move the seat forward. Remove the steering wheel if necessary.

Note. Check electrical and electronic components and wires before removing seat further to avoid unnecessary repair costs.

Perform the following tests

1. Check fuse. refer to the appropriate System Wiring Diagram information.
2. Check voltage at connector station, perform Fault Finding if necessary, refer to the appropriate System Wiring Diagram information.
3. Check voltage to control module. refer to the appropriate System Wiring Diagram information.
4. Check the voltage to the seat forward/back adjustment motor -V288-. refer to the appropriate System Wiring Diagram information.

Replace the fuse if faulty. refer to the appropriate System Wiring Diagram information.

If there is no voltage at the connector station, repair or replace the wire. refer to the appropriate System Wiring Diagram information.

Replace the control module if faulty. Refer to MEMORY SEAT/STEERING COLUMN ADJUSTMENT CONTROL MODULE J136 OR PASSENGER MEMORY SEAT CONTROL MODULE J521 .

If the seat forward/back adjustment motor -V288- is faulty: Replace the lower seat frame -7- with the seat forward/back adjustment motor -V288- and transverse member. Refer to SEAT PAN, DISASSEMBLING AND ASSEMBLING .

Continue removing only if the seat forward/back adjustment motor -V288- is faulty

Turn on the ignition and disconnect the ground cable from the battery. Refer to BATTERY, DISCONNECTING AND CONNECTING .

Remove the bolts -2- (quantity 4).

Disconnect seat fore and aft adjustment connector -9- at motor.

Tip front seat back.

Slide seat until screws -1- (quantity: 4) become visible.

8 - Driver seat console

Disconnect connectors. Refer to CONNECTORS, DISCONNECTING .

Connect Airbag Adapter VAS 6235 or VAS 6280. Refer to AIRBAG ADAPTER, DISCONNECTING AND CONNECTING .

With help from a second technician, lift the front seat out of vehicle.

Separate the lower frame -7- from the upper frame -5-. Refer to SEAT PAN, DISASSEMBLING AND ASSEMBLING .

Replace lower seat pan frame -7- with the seat forward/back adjustment motor -V288- with the transverse member -9-. Refer to SEAT PAN, DISASSEMBLING AND ASSEMBLING .

Installation

Installation of the seat is in reverse order of removal, noting the following

Clean nut threads before installing new screws.

Insert new screws.

Following screw installation sequence. Refer to FRONT SEAT .

Install the front seat FRONT SEAT .

Tightening Specifications

DRIVER SEAT ANGLE ADJUSTMENT MOTOR V243 OR V244

2. Fixture for seat repair VAS 6136

Removing

Remove the seat. Refer to FRONT SEAT .

Mount the fixture for seat repair VAS 6136 on the engine and transmission holder VAS 6095.

Attach the front seat to the fixture for seat repair VAS 6136.

Remove screws -2- (quantity: 4).

Scheme 152

Remove the bolt -3-.

Remove connector -4-.

Remove Driver Seat Inclination Adjustment Motor -V243- or -V244- -1-.

Installation

Install in reverse order of removal. Note the following

Ensure connectors are engaged correctly.

Note. Make sure the connectors are installed all the way in and are secure. Make sure the wires do not get caught.

Switch on ignition.

Connect the battery ground cable with the ignition turned on. Refer to BATTERY, DISCONNECTING AND CONNECTING .

If the airbag indicator lamp -K75- indicates a fault after installation, the DTC memory must be checked, deleted and checked again. Refer to Vehicle diagnostic tester.

SEAT FORWARD/BACK ADJUSTMENT MOTOR V288

Special tools and workshop equipment required

1. Engine and transmission holder VAS 6095
2. Fixture for seat repair VAS 6136

Note. Move the seat up if possible. If the motor is faulty, the complete lower seat pan frame must be replaced. Seat is shown without upholstery and without backrest in picture for the sake of a better illustration.

Removing

Remove the front seat. Refer to FRONT SEAT IN CASE OF A FAULTY CONTROL MODULE OR SEAT FORWARD/BACK ADJUSTMENT MOTOR .

Separate the seat pan upper frame from the lower frame. Refer to SEAT PAN, DISASSEMBLING AND ASSEMBLING .

Installation

Assemble the new lower seat pan frame, and the transverse member and traverse and the seat forward/back adjustment motor -V288- to the upper seat pan frame. Refer to SEAT PAN, DISASSEMBLING AND ASSEMBLING .

Connect the connector to the seat forward/back adjustment motor -V288-.

Install the front seat. Refer to FRONT SEAT .

DRIVER'S BACKREST ADJUSTMENT MOTOR V45 OR V46

Removing

Remove the backrest. Refer to FRONT BACKREST .

Create photos or sketches of wire securing and routing.

Disconnect connector -5- at backrest adjustment motor -1-.

Scheme 153

Pull cover -3- and anti-squeak fleece -2- aside.

Remove the bolt -4-.

On backrest motor side, pry out spring washer -1- with a screwdriver.

Scheme 154

Tap shaft -2- through the side of the backrest frame using a hammer and drift punch.

Remove shaft -2- from the backrest frame far enough so that the seat forward/back adjustment motor can be removed.

Installation

Using a screwdriver, turn the anti-twist mechanism of splines -1- so that it aligns with the backrest frame shaft.

Scheme 155

Slide shaft through backrest adjustment motor and backrest frame.

Place a wood block -1- under shaft on side opposite of backrest adjustment motor.

Scheme 156

Drive spring washer -2- onto shaft -3- using a socket insert (11 mm) -1-.

Scheme 157

Install screw on backrest adjustment motor and tighten to specified tightening specification. Refer to FRONT SEAT BACKREST ADJUSTMENT MOTORS V45/V46 ASSEMBLY OVERVIEW .

Connect connector to backrest adjustment motor.

Further installation is performed in reverse sequence of removal, but observe the following

Cut threads in backrest frame before installing new screws -3- (quantity: 4).

Replace screws -3- (quantity: 4) after each removal.

Route and secure wiring according to photos or sketches that were made.

Ensure all connectors are engaged correctly.

Note. Make sure the connectors are installed all the way in and are secure. Make sure the wires do not get caught.

Switch on ignition.

Connect the battery ground cable with the ignition turned on. Refer to BATTERY, DISCONNECTING AND CONNECTING .

If the airbag indicator lamp -K75- indicates a fault after installation, the DTC memory must be checked, deleted and checked again. Refer to Vehicle diagnostic tester.

LUMBAR SUPPORT CURVATURE ADJUSTMENT MOTORS V125 AND V126

Removing

Note. Lumbar support must not be in end position when replacing curvature adjustment motor.

Remove backrest cover panel. Refer to BACKREST COVER .

Disconnect the connector -1-.

Scheme 158

Release retaining bracket -2- with a screwdriver.

Remove Driver Seat Lumbar Support Curvature Adjustment Motor -V125- or -V126- -3-.

Installation

Install in reverse order of removal. Note the following

Driver Seat Lumbar Support Curvature Adjustment Motor can only be installed in one position.

Replace spring clips (quantity: 3).

Ensure airbag connector engages correctly.

Note. Make sure the connectors are installed all the way in and are secure. Make sure the wires do not get caught.

Switch on ignition.

Connect the battery ground cable with the ignition turned on. Refer to BATTERY, DISCONNECTING AND CONNECTING .

If the airbag indicator lamp -K75- indicates a fault after installation, the DTC memory must be checked, deleted and checked again. Refer to Vehicle diagnostic tester.

LUMBAR SUPPORT HEIGHT ADJUSTMENT MOTORS V129 AND V130

Removal and installation of lumbar support height adjustment motor is similar to that of curvature adjustment motor. For this reason, removal and installation of lumbar support height adjustment motor is not described separately. Refer to LUMBAR SUPPORT CURVATURE ADJUSTMENT MOTORS V125 AND V126 .

SEAT HEIGHT ADJUSTMENT MOTOR V245/V246

1. Engine and transmission holder VAS 6095
2. Fixture for seat repair VAS 6136

Removing

Scheme 159

Remove the front seat. Refer to FRONT SEAT .

Disconnect the electrical connector on the seat forward/back adjustment motor.

Remove the screw -1- ; to do this, connect the contacts on the motor with a battery using the cables from the connector test set V.A.G 1594C and bring the seat adjustment into position.

Remove the mount -2- for the belt latch -3- and disconnect the seat belt fastening sensor connector.

Mount the fixture for seat repair VAS 6136 on the engine and transmission holder VAS 6095.

Attach the seat to the fixture for seat repair VAS 6136.

Remove trim. Refer to TRIM .

Remove tunnel side trim panel. Refer to TUNNEL SIDE TRIM .

Create photos or sketches of wire securing and routing.

Remove the front backrest. Refer to FRONT BACKREST .

Note. If the front backrest is not removed, the load on the seat frame will cause the "ceramic sleeves" to break.

Remove the bolt -1-.

Scheme 160

Remove the nut -4- and then remove the screw -3-.

Fold the seat pan -2- up -arrow- and secure it with a wooden block so it does not fold back down.

Note. Bushings -1- in the bearing locations on lower seat pan frame -2- must not be damaged when folding the frame upward.

Disconnect the connector -2-.

Scheme 161

Remove the screws -arrows- and remove the height adjustment motor -1-.

Installation

Installation is reverse of removal, noting the following

Clean the threaded bolt holes for self-locking nuts, for example using a thread tap.

Replace all self-locking bolts.

Make sure the clip -A- and plastic toothed segment collar -2- as well as locking pins -B arrows- are inserted correctly in holes on fitting -1-.

Scheme 162

Make sure the plastic toothed segment -2- is clipped to fitting -1- correctly.

Plastic toothed segment collar -arrow C- must contact fitting -1- evenly.

Route and secure wiring according to photos or sketches that were made.

Ensure all connectors are engaged correctly.

Note. Make sure the connectors are installed all the way in and are secure. Make sure the wires do not get caught.

Switch on ignition.

Connect the battery ground cable with the ignition turned on. Refer to BATTERY, DISCONNECTING AND CONNECTING .

If the airbag indicator lamp -K75- indicates a fault after installation, the DTC memory must be checked, deleted and checked again. Refer to Vehicle diagnostic tester.

In the case of memory seats: perform a basic setting for the backrest or seat after installation of the seat in the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle diagnostic tester.

LUMBAR SUPPORT ADJUSTMENT SWITCHES E176 AND E177

Removing

Remove trim panel -2-. Refer to TRIM

Create photos or sketches of wire securing and routing.

Disconnect the connector -1-.

Remove bolts -3- (quantity: 2).

Remove lumbar support adjustment switch -4- from trim panel -2-.

Installation

Install in reverse order of removal. Note the following

Disconnect connectors -2- and -7-.

Remove seat and backrest adjustment knobs -4- and -5-. Refer to SEAT AND BBACKREST ADJUSTMENT SWITCH .

Remove screws -1- (quantity: 3).

Remove seat fore and aft, inclination, height and backrest adjustment switch -6-.

Installation

Install in reverse order of removal. Note the following

2. Fixture for seat repair VAS 6136

Note. The memory seat/steering column adjustment control module -J136- or front passenger memory seat control module -J521- is located under the front seat. If Memory Seat/Steering Column Adjustment Control Module -J136- or -J521- is faulty, the upper seat pan frame must be removed. Refer to FRONT SEAT IN CASE OF A FAULTY CONTROL MODULE OR SEAT FORWARD/BACK ADJUSTMENT MOTOR .

Removing

Remove the front seat. Refer to FRONT SEAT IN CASE OF A FAULTY CONTROL MODULE OR SEAT FORWARD/BACK ADJUSTMENT MOTOR .

Mount the fixture for seat repair VAS 6136 on the engine and transmission holder VAS 6095.

Attach the front seat to the fixture for seat repair VAS 6136.

Remove bolts -2- (quantity: 2).

Scheme 165

Rotate memory seat/steering column adjustment control module -1-.

Release retaining bracket -4- and remove connector -5-.

Press in catches -3- (quantity: 2) and disconnect connector -2-.

Remove the bolts -2-.

Removing

Remove seat or seat bench.

Remove seat cushion.

Remove outer part of left side trim. Refer to LEFT SIDE TRIM PANEL, OUTER PART .

Disengage cable at backrest adjustment lever -1-.

Remove screw -2- and remove backrest adjustment lever -1-.

Backrest adjustment lever handle is only engaged.

Installation

Install in reverse order of removal.

Remove seat cushion.

Remove outer part of left side trim. Refer to LEFT SIDE TRIM PANEL, OUTER PART .

Drill out pop rivet -7-.

Remove spring clip -3-.

Remove idler pulley -2- and protective cap -1-.

Disengage cable -4- at seat frame -arrow A- and at backrest adjustment lever -arrow B-.

Remove retaining plate -6- from seat frame.

Remove cable -4- together with guide rollers -5-.

Installation

Install in reverse order of removal. Note the following

Note installation location of guide rollers -5- on cable -4-.

Closed housing ring must face in direction of retaining plate -6-.

Position cable -4-. Refer to BACKREST ADJUSTMENT CABLE, ADJUSTING .
