Visual Check

Check whether steering column parts show signs of damage.

Functional Check

Check whether steering column can be turned without catching or difficulty of movement.

Check whether steering column can be easily adjusted laterally and vertically.

Check whether there is a gap -arrow- between slides -1- and console -2-.

Scheme 1: STEERING COLUMN, CHECKING FOR DAMAGE

Gap -arrow- on an undamaged steering column is 0 mm.

If gap is greater than 0.5 mm, steering column must be replaced.

Special tools and workshop equipment required

  1. Locking Pliers VAS 6199

First measure steering arm in "Guided Fault Finding" with the vehicle diagnostic tester.

Connect the vehicle diagnostic tester and select troubleshooting using "Functions/Component selection".

If the result of measurement was outside if tolerance, measure steering arm mechanically.

With vehicles with air suspension, place vehicle on hoist. Refer to POSITIONING VEHICLE ON HOIST AND WHEELS .

Remove left boot from steering gear.

Turn steering out of center position toward right as far as stop.

Measure dimension -a- as shown in illustration.

Dimension -a- must be 144.6 mm.

Note. If dimension -a- is not achieved, check whether version is same on left and right.

Remove right boot from steering gear.

Turn steering toward left as far as stop.

Measure dimension between steering gear and tie rod/steering arm boundary hex head again.

Dimension -a- must be the same in both measurements.

Measure dimension -a- as shown in illustration.

Dimension -a- must be 152.6 mm.

Note. If dimension -a- is not achieved, check whether version is same on left and right.

Remove right boot from steering gear.

Turn steering toward left as far as stop.

Measure dimension between steering gear and tie rod/steering arm boundary hex head again.

Dimension -a- must be the same in both measurements.

Note. Following installation operations and with no hydraulic fluid in the expansion tank, the steering system must be checked for leaks.

Start engine.

Turn steering wheel in both directions to full lock and hold briefly.

This builds up the maximum possible pressure.

Note. To avoid damage to power steering pump, steering wheel must not be held at stop longer than 10 seconds during this test.

In this position, the following components must be checked for leaks.

  1. Seal ring for steering pinion at the steering gear valve housing
  2. All wiring connections
  3. The rack sealing rings.

This test can only be performed with boot slid back.

Open spring-type hose clamp and boot hose clamp.

Push the boots back.

If fluid is visible in steering gear housing and/or in bellows, steering gear must be replaced.

Special tools and workshop equipment required

  1. Hose Clamps Up to 25 mm Dia.3094
  2. Torque Wrench 5-50 Nm V.A.G 1331
  3. Power Steering Test Unit V.A.G 1402
  4. Adapter V.A.G 1402/2

Test Prerequisites

  1. Ribbed belt/ribbed belt tension OK
  2. Sealing of system
  3. Hoses/lines are not kinked or constricted

Checking

Vehicles with air suspension, place vehicle on hoist. Refer to POSITIONING VEHICLE ON HOIST AND WHEELS .

CAUTIONThe 3094 must not be secured on return hose in check valve area. Otherwise, check valve will be damaged. The check valve is located in the return hose between the hose clamps -arrows-.

Clamp the intake hose and the return line near the longitudinal member with hose clamps up to 25 mm diameter3094.

Remove the 3094.

Make sure that lever on pressure gauge stands in position -2-.

Start engine and fill hydraulic fluid in reservoir if necessary.

Turn steering wheel from stop to stop approximately 10 times.

Note. To avoid damage to pump, note the following: Pressure gauge shut-off valve must not remained closed longer than 10 seconds during this test. Start engine without giving gas and run at idle. Read the pump pressure immediately after starting at idle speed (have it read by a second technician, if necessary). Because pressure falls over the course of the test, the highest pressure shown is the decisive measurement.

Now check delivery pressure.

Start engine and when at idle speed, close shut-off valve -1- and read pressure (do not measure longer than 10 seconds).

Specification for Delivery Pressure: 110 to 128 bar

If specified value is not obtained, replace power steering pump. Refer to POWER STEERING PUMP.

Turn off engine.

Remove V.A.G 1402.

Install banjo bolt with new gaskets, refer to item 7. Note location of pressure line when doing so. Refer to POWER STEERING PUMP.

Bleed steering system. Refer to STEERING SYSTEM, BLEEDING AFTER REINSTALLING.

Check power steering fluid level. Refer to POWER STEERING, CHECKING HYDRAULIC OIL LEVEL.

Check the steering system for leaks. Refer to STEERING SYSTEM, CHECKING FOR LEAKS.

Clean engine, engine compartment and subframe in power steering pump area.

Install noise insulation. Refer to Removal and Installation.

On vehicles with air suspension, position vehicle on wheels. Refer to POSITIONING VEHICLE ON HOIST AND WHEELS .

Special tools and workshop equipment required

Checking

With vehicles with air suspension, place vehicle on hoist. Refer to POSITIONING VEHICLE ON HOIST AND WHEELS .

Carefully pull off engine cover from 4 retainers -arrows-.

Clamp the intake hose and the return line on the reservoir using 3094.

Secure V.A.G 1402 -3- with a cable tie -2- to stabilizer bar -1-.

Remove the 3094.

Turn off engine.

Remove V.A.G 1402.

Install banjo bolt with new gaskets, refer to item 8. Note location of pressure line when doing so. see scheme 114

Bleed steering system. Refer to STEERING SYSTEM, BLEEDING AFTER REINSTALLING.

Check power steering fluid level. Refer to POWER STEERING, CHECKING HYDRAULIC OIL LEVEL.

Check the steering system for leaks. Refer to STEERING SYSTEM, CHECKING FOR LEAKS.

Clean engine, engine compartment and subframe in power steering pump area.

Install noise insulation. Refer to Removal and Installation.

On vehicles with air suspension, position vehicle on wheels. Refer to POSITIONING VEHICLE ON HOIST AND WHEELS .

Checking

Carefully pull off engine cover from 4 retainers -arrows-.

Remove the air guide hose -arrows-.

Clamp the intake hose and the return line on the reservoir using 3094.

CAUTIONThe 3094 must not be secured on return hose in check valve area. Otherwise, check valve will be damaged. The check valve is in the return hose between the cambers -A arrows- or between hose clamps -B arrows-.

Remove the bolts -1- and remove the pressure line from the power steering pump.

Mount the V.A.G 1402 as illustrated.

  1. Replace the adapter V.A.G 1402/17-1 seal if it is damaged or leaking. Refer to item 10 .

Note. Position the elbow V.A.G 1402/17-3 on the adapter V.A.G 1402/17-1 so that the hose from the adapter set V.A.G 1402/6 does not touch the pulley and/or ribbed belt. Tighten the union nuts on the elbows V.A.G 1402/17-3 and the adapter set V.A.G 1402/6 hoses hand-tight with an open-end wrench.

Remove the 3094.

Make sure the lever on the pressure gauge is in position -2-.

Install the air guide hose -arrows-.

Start the engine and fill hydraulic fluid in reservoir if necessary.

Turn steering wheel from stop to stop approximately 10 times.

Note. To avoid damage to pump, note the following: Pressure gauge shut-off valve must not remained closed longer than 10 seconds during this test. Start engine without giving gas and run at idle. Read the pump pressure immediately after starting at idle speed (have it read by a second technician, if necessary). Because pressure falls over the course of the test, the highest pressure shown is the decisive measurement.

Now check delivery pressure.

Start engine and when at idle speed, close shut-off valve -1- and read pressure (do not measure longer than 10 seconds).

Specification for Delivery Pressure: 110 to 128 Bar

If specified value is not obtained, replace power steering pump ASSEMBLY OVERVIEW II - POWER STEERING PUMP FOR ENGINE GENERATION I WITH SCR AND GENERATION II.

Turn off engine.

Remove V.A.G 1402.

Insert the pressure line with a new O-ring into the power steering pump and tighten the bolts, refer to item 8 .

Bleed steering system. Refer to STEERING SYSTEM, BLEEDING AFTER REINSTALLING.

Check power steering fluid level. Refer to POWER STEERING, CHECKING HYDRAULIC OIL LEVEL.

Check the steering system for leaks. Refer to STEERING SYSTEM, CHECKING FOR LEAKS.

Clean engine, engine compartment and subframe in power steering pump area.

Special tools and workshop equipment required

  1. Hose clamps up to 25 mm diameter 3094
  2. Power steering tester V.A.G 1402
  3. Adapter V.A.G 1402/2
  4. Hose from adapter set V.A.G 1402/6
  5. Torque Wrench 5-50 Nm V.A.G 1331

Checking

Clamp the intake hose and the return line on the reservoir using 3094.

Only remove front noise insulation -1-.

Secure V.A.G 1402 -3- with a cable tie -2- to stabilizer bar -1-.

Remove banjo bolt -6-.

Remove the 3094.

Turn off engine.

Remove Power steering test unit V.A.G 1402.

Install banjo bolt with new gaskets. Note location of pressure line when doing so. Refer to item 14 and see scheme 134

Bleed steering system. Refer to STEERING SYSTEM, BLEEDING AFTER REINSTALLING.

Check power steering fluid level. Refer to POWER STEERING, CHECKING HYDRAULIC OIL LEVEL.

Check the steering system for leaks. Refer to STEERING SYSTEM, CHECKING FOR LEAKS.

Install noise insulation. Refer to Removal and Installation.

On vehicles with air suspension, position vehicle on wheels. Refer to POSITIONING VEHICLE ON HOIST AND WHEELS .

Removing

Set the wheels to the straight ahead position.

Position steering wheel as far back as possible. Use the entire steering column adjustment range to do this.

Install the airbag. Refer to Removal and Installation.

Note. Removal and installation of steering wheel must take place in the center position (wheels in straight-ahead position).

Remove bolt -2-.

Mark position of steering wheel/column with a felt-tip pen.

Remove steering wheel -3- from steering column.

Installing

Especially Observe the Following During Installation

Before positioning the steering wheel, make sure the wheels are in the straight position.

When installing removed steering wheel: Make sure that markings on the steering column/wheel align.

When installing a new steering wheel (without marking): Steering wheel must be position in center position (steering wheel spoke must be horizontal and wheels in straight-ahead position).

Install steering wheel.

Install the airbag unit. Refer to Removal and Installation.

Perform road test.

If steering wheel is crooked, remove it again and rotate it on steering column splines.

Tighten new steering wheel bolts. Refer to Removal and Installation.

Special tools and workshop equipment required

Removing

Note. The steering column is only delivered complete with the access/start control module -J518- as a replacement part. Service is not possible. If the steering column was replaced, then start program J518 - replace control module - in vehicle diagnostic tester in "Guided Fault Finding".

WARNINGBefore removing steering wheel, wheels must be in straight-ahead position. Follow safety precautions when working on airbag. Refer to General Safety Precautions. If these measures are not observed, the airbag system may not function properly during vehicle operation!

Set the wheels to the straight ahead position.

Place selector lever in position "N" and turn ignition off.

Remove the driver airbag unit. Refer to Removal and Installation.

Remove steering wheel. Refer to STEERING WHEEL WITH AIRBAG.

Remove driver side footwell trim. Refer to Removal and Installation.

Remove bolts -arrows 2- and remove handle.

Remove bolts -arrows 1-.

Remove bolts with T40056 A and remove steering column trim.

Remove brake lamp switch -F-. Refer to Removal and Installation.

Vehicles with air suspension, place vehicle on hoist. Refer to POSITIONING VEHICLE ON HOIST AND WHEELS .

Remove the steering column switch. Refer to [For engine(s) CATA, BHK, CJWC, CJWB, BAR] Removal and Installation.

Raise the vehicle.

Only remove front noise insulation -1-.

Remove the heat shield -A- from steering gear (2 bolts).

Turn the steering pinion on the steering gear approximately 1 / 2 turn.

Remove the universal joint bolt -B- from steering gear. Remove universal joint from steering gear.

Carefully slide lower shaft into upper shaft until stop.

On some engine versions, the upper nuts are also accessible from above through engine compartment.

Applies to Vehicles with an 8-Cylinder Gasoline Engine

Open spring-type clips -1- with Spring Type Clip Pliers VAS 5024 A and remove intake hose -2-.

Move the heat shield slightly to the left.

Remove the 3 protective boot nuts -arrows-.

Remove brackets -1- -arrows-. Disengage the wiring harness.

Release connector -2- and disconnect it.

Remove bracket -1- from control module.

Remove left wiring harness -arrows-.

Disconnect connector -1- on vehicles with electrical steering column.

Disconnect harness connectors -1 and 3-. Remove wiring guide -2- upward from steering column.

Remove bolt -1- and finally bolt -2-.

CAUTIONPay particular attention to the correct handling and transporting of the steering column. Refer to STEERING COLUMN, HANDLING AND TRANSPORTING.

Carefully remove steering column.

Note. Upper and lower sections of the steering column must not be separated without being marked. This may lead to rattling noises during later driving operations if the mesh section is not in its original installation position.

If the protective boot is to be removed. Refer to PROTECTIVE BOOT.

Installing

Install in reverse order of removal. Note the following

When replacing the mechanical steering column, the handle for steering column must also be replaced.

Place the steering column on the cross member.

Lightly install all bolts by hand.

Tighten bolts -1- to -4- in sequence shown to tightening specification.

Then tighten nut -5- to specification.

Tightening specification and tightening sequence. Refer to STEERING COLUMN OVERVIEW.

Install the universal joint on the steering pinion and tighten it.

Install protective boot correctly and tighten.

The following programs must be performed in Guided Fault Finding or in Guided Functions if a new steering column was installed: Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing and Information System

Adapt driving authorization system to the existing immobilizer

J518 - Immobilizer activation/new identity

Coding access/start control module -J518

J518 - Code control module (repair group 96)

Perform steering angle sensor -G85- basic setting

G85 - Steering angle sensor calibration
