Starter, Removing and Installing

Observe notes on contact corrosion --> Contact Corrosion .

Scheme 43

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

1. Support bar 10 - 222 A
2. Shackles 10 - 222 A/12
3. Adapter 10 - 222 A/21

Removing

1. With ignition switched off, disconnect battery Ground (GND) wire --> «Battery, Disconnecting and Connecting»(/audi/a8/d3-2-2007-2010/remont/cruise-control-systems/#electrical-equipment__battery-disconnecting-and-connecting) .

Note. All cable ties opened or cut during engine removal must be reinstalled at the same locations during installation.

Scheme 44

1. Remove rubber seal - 1 - on plenum chamber covers.
2. Remove plenum chamber covers - 2 - and - 3 -.

Scheme 45

1. Remove cover for right suspension strut dome by detaching expanding clip - 1 - and removing bolted joint - 2 -.

Note. Pay attention to retaining clips - arrows - on installation.

Scheme 46

1. Remove cover for left suspension strut dome by removing bolt - 1 - and detaching expanding clip - 2 -.

Note. Pay attention to retaining clips - arrows - on installation.

Scheme 47

1. Remove rear bolts - 3 - for dome brace.
2. Attach Support bar 10 - 222 A with Adapter 10 - 222 A/21 to suspension strut domes.

1. Supports are marked for left and right side of vehicle.
2. Center resting point of supports is positioned on front bolts for dome brace.
3. Adapters 10 - 222 A/21 are secured with rear bolts - 3 - for dome brace.
4. Knurled screw - 1 - must be screwed down such that support plate rests on suspension strut dome.

Scheme 48

1. Attach Shackles 10 - 222 A/12 to rear engine lifting eyes.
2. Engage Shackle 10 - 222 A/12 at Engine Support Bridge 10 - 222 A spindles.
3. Pre-tension engine slightly with engine support bridge spindles.

Scheme 49

1. On vehicles with parking heater, remove parking/auxiliary heater exhaust pipe screws - arrows - at noise insulation.

1. Unfasten bolts/quick-release fasteners - 1 - and - 2 - and detach front noise insulation.
2. Remove right front wheel.
3. Remove front right wheelhousing liner --> «66 - EXTERIOR EQUIPMENT»(/audi/a8/d3-2-2007-2010/remont/door-locks-anti-theft-systems/#body-exterior) .

Scheme 50

1. Remove bolts - 1 through 3 - on both sides of vehicle.
2. Lower subframe.

Scheme 51

1. Remove screws - arrows -.
2. Remove clamp - 1 -.
3. Disconnect connector - 2 - at engine mount.

Scheme 52

1. Remove heat shield for right drive axle - arrows -.

Scheme 53

1. Remove link plate for front exhaust pipe on right - arrows -.

1. Remove bolt - arrow -.

1. Remove bolt - 1 -.
2. Disconnect electrical wire for terminal B+ - item 2
3. Disconnect connector for terminal 50 - item 3 -.

Note. Depending on construction type, terminal 50 may be bolted on to starter.

1. Remove starter downwards.

Installing

Install in reverse order of removal, observing the following

Note. Re-attach all cable ties at the same locations when re-installing.

1. Install crossmember --> «00 - TECHNICAL DATA»(/audi/a8/d3-2-2007-2010/remont/axle-shafts/#suspension-wheels-and-steering) .
2. Install front right wheel housing liner --> «66 - EXTERIOR EQUIPMENT»(/audi/a8/d3-2-2007-2010/remont/door-locks-anti-theft-systems/#body-exterior) .
3. Connect battery. Required actions --> «Battery, Disconnecting and Connecting»(/audi/a8/d3-2-2007-2010/remont/cruise-control-systems/#electrical-equipment__battery-disconnecting-and-connecting) .

Removing

Note. When installing, reinstall all cable ties that were loosened or cut during removal in the same locations.

1. With ignition switched off, disconnect battery Ground (GND) wire --> «Battery, Disconnecting and Connecting»(/audi/a8/d3-2-2007-2010/remont/cruise-control-systems/#electrical-equipment__battery-disconnecting-and-connecting) .
2. Remove rear engine cover - arrows -.

1. Remove rubber seal - 1 - on plenum chamber covers.
2. Remove plenum chamber covers - 2 - and - 3 -.

1. Remove rear bolts - 3 - for dome brace.
2. Secure Adapter 10 - 222 A/21 to suspension strut towers without crossbars.

1. Supports are marked for left and right side of vehicle.
2. Center resting point - 2 - of supports is positioned on front bolts for dome brace.
3. Adapters 10 - 222 A/21 are secured with rear bolts - 3 - for dome brace.
4. Knurled screw - 1 - must be screwed down such that support plate rests on suspension strut dome.

Scheme 58

1. Secure crossbars with two adapters T40093/6 to Adapter 10 - 222 A/21.
2. Attach Spindle 10 - 222 A/11 to rear engine lifting eyes.
3. Pre-tension engine slightly with engine support bridge spindles.

1. Remove front right wheel.
2. Remove fasteners - 1 - , - 2 - and - 4 - and remove front noise insulation.
3. Remove right front part of front wheel housing liner --> «66 - EXTERIOR EQUIPMENT»(/audi/a8/d3-2-2007-2010/remont/door-locks-anti-theft-systems/#body-exterior) .

1. Free up secondary air injection (AIR) air guide hose - 1 - on ATF cooler.
2. Remove bolts - arrows - and remove ATF cooler.
3. Secure ATF cooler to engine.

1. Remove bracket for noise insulation - arrows -.

Scheme 60

1. Remove screws - arrows -.
2. Remove heat shield.

Scheme 61

1. Remove bolts - 1 - and - 2 - for left and right stabilizer mounts.

Scheme 62

1. Remove bolts - 3 - and - 4 -.

Note. Ignore - item 1 - and - item 2 -.

1. Remove left and right engine mount bolts - arrows -.
2. Remove engine support.

Scheme 64

1. Disconnect connector - 2 - at right engine mount.
2. Remove electrical wiring bracket - 1 - on engine support.
3. Remove screws - arrows -.
4. Remove right engine support with engine mount.

Scheme 65

Note. The B+ line can only be removed after disconnecting terminal 50 electrical connector.

1. Remove ground wire - 1 -.
2. Remove electrical wires - 3 - and - 4 -.
3. Remove bolts - 2 - and - 5 - and remove starter.

Installing

Install in reverse order of removal, observing the following

Note. When installing, install cable ties at same location.

1. Install engine carrier and subframe --> «40 - FRONT SUSPENSION»(/audi/a8/d3-2-2007-2010/remont/axle-shafts/#suspension-wheels-and-steering) .
2. Install engine support --> «10 - ENGINE - ASSEMBLY»(/audi/a8/d3-2-2007-2010/remont/cooling-fan/#42l-v8-4v-engine-mechanical-engine-codes-bvj) for 4.2 LITER V8 4V ENGINE MECHANICAL, ENGINE CODE(S): BVJ 10 - ENGINE - ASSEMBLY for 4.2 LITER V8 5V ENGINE MECHANICAL, ENGINE CODE(S): BFM .
3. Install stabilizer bar --> «40 - FRONT SUSPENSION»(/audi/a8/d3-2-2007-2010/remont/axle-shafts/#suspension-wheels-and-steering) .
4. Connect battery. Required actions --> «Battery, Disconnecting and Connecting»(/audi/a8/d3-2-2007-2010/remont/cruise-control-systems/#electrical-equipment__battery-disconnecting-and-connecting) .

Removing

Scheme 66

1. Remove engine --> «10 - ENGINE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING»(ref-289204-S29479652902008062700000) .
2. Leave transmission with engine installed on Scissor Lift Table VAS 6131.
3. Remove bolt - arrow -.
4. Remove bracket for connectors - 1 through 4 - from subframe.

Scheme 67

1. Remove bolts - arrows - at front left and right transmission mounts.

Scheme 68

1. Twist spindles of support elements left and right at subframe completely downward.
2. Remove both base plates of attachments for subframe from scissor lift table VAS 6131.
3. Remove attachments.
4. Remove subframe to side.

1. Turn the spindles for support elements - 1 - (left and right) at engine support - 4 - all the way down.

1. Remove bolts - arrows - at left and right engine mounts.
2. Remove engine support.

Scheme 69

1. Remove electrical wiring bracket on right engine support - arrow -.

Scheme 70

1. Disconnect connector - arrow - at left engine mount.
2. Remove bolts - 1 through 4 - and remove engine support with engine mount.

Scheme 71

1. Disconnect ground cable - 4 - from starter.
2. Disconnect electrical wires - 2 - and - 3 - from starter.
3. Remove bolts - 1 - and - 5 - and remove starter.

Installing

Install in reverse order of removal, observing the following

1. Install engine --> «10 - ENGINE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING»(ref-289204-S29479652902008062700000) .

Tightening Specifications

Removing

1. Engine/transmission assembly removed and secured to Scissor lift table VAS 6131 --> «10 - ENGINE - ASSEMBLY»(/audi/a8/d3-2-2007-2010/remont/cooling-fan/#60l-12-cyl-4v-engine-mechanical-engine-codes-bsb) .

1. Remove bolts - arrows - at front left and right transmission mounts.

Scheme 72

1. Remove bolt - arrow -.
2. Detach coolant pipe (bottom right) from coolant hose - 1 -.

Note. Disregard item - 2 -.

1. Turn the spindles for support elements - 2 - (left and right) at subframe all the way down.
2. Remove the locating lugs from the spindles.
3. Remove the subframe - 3 - to the side.

Note. Two technicians are required to remove subframe.

1. Turn the spindles for support elements - 1 - (left and right) at engine support - 4 - all the way down.

1. Remove bolts - arrows - at left and right engine mounts.
2. Remove engine support.

Scheme 73

1. Detach coolant hoses - arrows -.
2. Remove bolt - 1 -.
3. Remove the coolant flange at oil cooler.

Scheme 74

1. Disconnect electrical harness connector - arrow - at right engine mount.
2. Remove bolts - 1 through 6 -.
3. Remove engine support with engine mount.

1. Remove ground (GND) wire - 4 - from starter.
2. Disconnect electrical wires - 2 - and - 3 - from starter.
3. Remove bolts - 1 - and - 5 - and remove starter.

Installing

Install in reverse order of removal, observing the following

Note. Re-attach all cable ties at the same locations when re-installing. Secure all hose connections using standard hose clamps . Replace O-ring

1. Install engine --> «10 - ENGINE - ASSEMBLY»(/audi/a8/d3-2-2007-2010/remont/cooling-fan/#60l-12-cyl-4v-engine-mechanical-engine-codes-bsb) .
2. Connect battery. Required actions --> «Battery, Disconnecting and Connecting»(/audi/a8/d3-2-2007-2010/remont/cruise-control-systems/#electrical-equipment__battery-disconnecting-and-connecting) .
