TRANSMISSION APPLICATION

Note. In the following procedures, letters and numbers in parenthesis are shown in illustrations.

Note. When battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle.

CAUTIONRadio/cassette or radio/CD player is equipped with an anti-theft protection circuit. Whenever battery is disconnected, radio will go into anti-theft mode. When battery is reconnected, radio will display CODE, and will be inoperative until proper code number is entered. Obtain security code before disconnecting battery.

  1. Turn ignition off. Disconnect negative battery cable. Disconnect intake air duct between air cleaner housing and throttle (arrows). Remove engine cover (arrows). (Scheme 91) Remove upper engine-to-transmission connecting bolts.
  2. Loosen mounting bolts (arrows) on fan shroud and electric fan (electric fan can be laid to side while still connected). (Scheme 92) Disconnect connectors for heated oxygen sensors. Remove upper mounting nuts from front exhaust pipe.
  3. Disconnect connectors (arrows) for left and right knock sensors on fuel rail. Disconnect fuel rail (arrows) and lay to side with injectors (close openings on engine with clean cloths). (Scheme 93) NOTE: Brackets (3180) and the threaded rod of Engine Support (10-222A) are screwed in from the front on the left side and from the back on the right side.
  4. Position Engine Support (10-222A) together with Adapters (10-222 A/3 and 10-222 A/4) on bolts of strut mount. Attach mounting hooks to eyes on engine using Brackets (3180) and support weight of engine with spindle. (Scheme 94)
  5. Remove front wheels. Remove noise insulation tray together with bracket. (Scheme 95) Unclip air duct for generator. Remove heat shields for right and left drive axles (arrows). (Scheme 96) Loosen right and left drive axles from transmission and move forward.
  6. Remove lower mounting nuts and bolts for front exhaust pipes and remove front pipes together with catalytic converters and heated oxygen sensors. Remove crossmember below exhaust system. Disconnect the rest of the exhaust system and remove. CAUTION: Ensure throttle body does not damage the insulation liner on the bulkhead.
  7. Loosen lower mounting bolts (arrows) on engine mounts. (Scheme 97) Remove mounting bolts (arrows) on right front torque arm. (Scheme 98) Raise engine until engine mount comes out of subframe. Remove right engine support and cable clamps (arrows). (Scheme 99) Place engine mount on subframe. Loosen lower engine-to-transmission bolts.
  8. Remove mounting bolt (1) for starter. Remove ground strap from engine block (starter ring). Disconnect wire (2). Remove positive cable (3). (Scheme 100) Remove remaining mounting bolts from starter and bracket (arrows). (Scheme 101) Remove upper mounting bolt from starter with extension and hang starter up to side on subframe. NOTE: To loosen the bolts for the torque converter, hold the center bolt on the vibration damper.
  9. Remove 3 bolts for torque converter through opening for starter. Turn crankshaft 1/3 revolution further for each bolt. (Scheme 102) Lower engine and install left engine mount on subframe. Tighten lower mounting bolts slightly.
  10. Remove rear bracket for noise insulation (1). Move safety lever (4) and disconnect connector for transmission wiring harness. Disconnect connector for multifunction TR switch (2) and disconnect bracket for connector (3). (Scheme 103) Disconnect speedometer Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS). Remove engine speed (RPM) sensor from left front of transmission. Remove lower engine-to-transmission connecting bolts.
  11. Set up Transmission Support (3282) together with Adjusting Plate (3282/19) and place on Transmission Jack (VAG 1383A). (Scheme 104) The symbols on the adjusting plate show the required brackets for transmission removal. The arrow points in the driving direction. The transmission can also be supported with Transmission Jack (VAG 1383A) and Plate (1359/2).
  12. Support transmission from below with Transmission Jack (VAG 1383A) and Transmission Support (3282). (Scheme 105) Disconnect heat shield plate for selector lever cable from transmission. Remove heat shield. Remove right and left transmission supports (arrows). (Scheme 106)and (Scheme 107). Remove multifunction TR switch to protect from damage.
  13. Press ball socket of selector lever cable (1) from transmission selector lever (2). (Scheme 108) If necessary, mark position of mounting bracket for selector lever cable relative to transmission housing for reinstallation. Remove mounting bracket bolts (arrows). (Scheme 109)
  14. Remove bolts (1) and (2). (Scheme 110) Lower rear subframe a maximum of 3.15" (80 mm) from mounting point on body by releasing tension on engine support. Lower rear of transmission a small distance. Remove bracket for ATF line from engine (on left front) and remove ATF line from transmission. Support engine at front with appropriate support. (Scheme 111)
  15. Press torque converter off drive plate of engine using pry bar. (Scheme 112) Press transmission off engine. Lower rear edge of transmission using Transmission Support (3282). Guide transmission out diagonally (downward to rear). Subframe is lowered by distance (a) of about 3.15" (80 mm). (Scheme 113) If necessary, decrease tension on the spindle of the Engine Support (10-222A). Ensure there is enough clearance between the bulkhead and the engine. Secure the torque converter so it will not fall out. NOTE: Prior to installing transmission, ensure dowel sleeves are seated correctly on the engine housing. Ensure torque converter has been correctly inserted in transmission. Before installing a replacement transmission, first clean the ATF cooler and ATF lines.
  16. Push torque converter hub through seal as far as first stop on transmission shaft. Press and rotate torque converter by hand until recess of torque converter hub engages in driver of pump gear and torque converter is felt to slip in to proper position. CAUTION: If torque converter is not installed correctly, driver of ATF pump will be damaged when transmission is attached to engine.
  17. Using depth gauge, measure converter installed distance. (Scheme 114) If the converter is correctly positioned, the distance between the faces of the threaded hole at torque converter and contact surface of the converter housing of transmission is about.91" (23 mm). If the converter is not correctly positioned, the distance is about.43" (11 mm).
  18. Ensure that no hoses get pinched when engine and transmission are pushed together. Use only original bolts to fasten torque converter to drive plate (M10 x 1 x 17). If necessary, slide shim plate between front long member and torque arm. Always replace self-locking fasteners. Always replace gaskets and "O" rings. Replace M 14 bolts and respective conical spring washers for subframe.
  19. Insert remaining engine-to-transmission bolts and tighten to specification. See «TRANSMISSION-TO-ENGINE BOLT TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS (3.7L)»(/audi/a8/d2-1994-1999/remont/automatic-trans/#removal-installation-at-01v-with-37l) table. 20. Install drive axles. Tighten all nuts and bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/audi/a8/d2-1994-1999/remont/automatic-trans/#removal-installation-at-01v-with-37l__torque-specifications). Adjust selector lever cable, if necessary. Install exhaust system. Check fluid level in final drive of transmission. Check ATF level and adjust as necessary. See appropriate SERVICING - A/T article.
