Connecting VAG 1551 Scan Tool (ST)
- Place selector lever in position "P" or "N" and engage parking brake.
- With ignition off, connect VAG 1551 Scan Tool (ST) VAG 1551/3 adapter cable to Data Link Connector (DLC), located under driver's knee bar, to left of steering wheel.
- Switch printer on by pressing PRINT button (indicator light in button comes on).
Checking DTC memory
- Start engine and let idle.
- Depress brake pedal once briefly.

- Press button -1- to select "Rapid data transfer" opera mode 1.

- Press button -0- twice to insert "Automatic Test Sequence" address word 00 and press -Q- button to confirm input. The VAG 1551 scan tool sends all known address words in sequence. If a control module responds with its identification, the number of stored malfunctions or "No DTC recognized" is indicated on the display. Any malfunctions stored in a system (as Diagnostic Trouble Codes, or DTCs) are displayed and printed in sequence. Then, the VAG 1551 scan tool sends the next address word.
Indicated on display. The automatic test sequence is ended.

- Switch ignition off.
If malfunctions were stored, a repair is necessary. The print-out from the VAG 1551 scan tool should be given to the Service department.
Note. The VAG 1551 scan tool must remain connected for adaptation of the Service Reminder Indicator (SRI) and possibly for emissions testing (where applicable).

Pre-delivery inspection
The Service Reminder Indicator (SRI) can be reset in two different ways.

Oil change service or inspection service
If the due date for a service has been reached, the service event due appears in the trip odometer display after the ignition is switched on. The display blinks for about 60 seconds after the engine is started.
The following displays are possible
"Service OIL" Oil change service due
"Service INSP" Inspection service due
An event that is due is displayed 1,000 km (625 mi) or 10 days in advance.
The Service Reminder Indicator (SRI) can be reset in two different ways.

SRI ADAPTATION VALUE CHART
Resetting SRI without using VAG 1551 or 1552 Scan Tool (ST)
- Switch ignition off.
- Press and hold down reset button for trip odometer -2- in instrument cluster.
- Switch ignition on while button is pressed down.
- "Service OIL" appears in the display of the trip odometer -3-.
- Release button.
- Pull setting knob for time -1- in instrument cluster until "Service OIL" indication is reset. "---" appears in display -3-.
- Press reset button for trip odometer -2- again, to advance to next service event.
- Release button. "Service INSP" appears in display -3-.
- Pull setting knob for time -1- until "Service INSP" indication is reset. "---" appears in display -3-.
- Switch ignition off.

Testing requirements
- Vehicle must not be started or driven (with battery to be tested) for at least 2 hours before taking measurements.
- No loads are to be applied to the battery for at least 2 hours before taking measurements.
- Battery must not be charged for at least 2 hours before taking measurements.
- With ignition switched off, measure voltage between battery terminals. If the multimeter displays 12.5 volts or more, the battery is OK. If voltage is below 12.5 volts, the cause must be determined.
Engine (from top and bottom) and engine compartment, visual inspection
Perform visual inspection as follows
- Remove engine cover. See «ENGINE COVER, REMOVING»(ref-196305-S20668937382005100900000) .
- Check engine and engine compartment for leaks and damage.
- Check lines, hoses and connections for leaks.
- Check for worn spots, porosity and brittleness on the following: Fuel system Cooling and heating system Brake system
Perform the visual inspection from below the vehicle with the vehicle raised on a lift and the noise insulation panel removed.
| CAUTION | Malfunctions must be corrected immediately. |
Brake system, visual inspection for leaks and damage
- Check the following components for leaks and damage: Brake master cylinder Brake booster ABS hydraulic unit Brake calipers
- Make sure brake hoses are not twisted.
- Make sure that with maximum steering angle (full lock), brake hoses do not touch any vehicle components.
- Check brake hoses for porosity and brittleness.
- Check brake hoses and brake lines for worn places.
- Check brake connections and mountings for correct fit, leaks and corrosion. CAUTION: Malfunctions must be corrected immediately.
Undercoating, visual inspection
- Inspect underbody, wheel housings and lower sills.
Note. Any malfunctions found must be repaired.
- Check tire tread surface and side wall for damage, and if necessary, remove foreign objects.
Inspection service
- Check tire tread surface and side wall for damage, and if necessary, remove foreign objects.
- Check tires for wash-outs, tread surfaces worn on one side, porous sides, cuts and bulges.
Note. Always report tire malfunctions or damage found to the customer immediately.
Test conditions
- Engine warm (oil temperature greater than 60 °C, or 140° F)
- Vehicle on flat surface
- Engine shut off for several minutes (so oil could flow back into oil pan)
- Withdraw dipstick, wipe with clean lint-free cloth and dipstick fully into dipstick tube.
- Withdraw dipstick again and note oil level indicated.
Marking range on dipstick
a - Oil must not be topped off.
b - Oil can be topped off. Oil level in range -a- afterward
c - Oil must be topped off. Oil level somewhere within measuring range -b- (corrugated area) afterward is OK.
| CAUTION | If the oil level is above range -a- there is a risk of causing damage to the Three Way Catalytic Converters (TWCs). |

During pre-delivery inspection, the fluid level must be at the MAX marking.
| CAUTION | Do not allow the fluid level to exceed the MAX marking. Otherwise fluid may flow out of the reservoir and cause damage. |
Scheme 19
- The fluid level should always be evaluated relative to the brake pad wear. During vehicle operation, a slight drop in the fluid level occurs because of wear and automatic adjustment of the brake pads.
- With a fluid level at the MIN marking and somewhat over that, no topping off is allowed if the brake pad wear limit has almost been reached.
- If the brake pads are new or far from the pad wear limit, the fluid level must be between the MIN and MAX markings.
| CAUTION | If the fluid level is below the MIN marking, the brake system must be checked before brake fluid is replaced. |

Road testing
The following checks are dependent on the vehicle equipment and options installed.

RAPGARD(R), inspection, removal and disposal

Inspection
- Inspect RAPGARD(R) For damage or peeling. If RAPGARD(R) is disturbed (dented, scratched, etc.)
- You must note the damage on the Carrier Delivery Receipt, including damage type, extent and location. Failure to note damage on the Carrier Delivery Receipt will result in nonpayment of the repair.
Note. RAPGARD(R) must be removed from the vehicle no later than six months after application. See sticker (location on vehicle body varies) for detailed information.
Within 72 Hours prior to delivery to the Customer
- Remove RAPGARD(R) From vehicle.
- Wash vehicle exterior.
- Inspect paint surfaces, moldings and glass.
- Protect the paint surface of all new vehicles by applying 3M Perfect-It(tm) Paste Wax (3M Part No. 39526) or equivalent.
RAPGARD (R), paint inspection after removal
- Inspect painted surfaces under one of the following lighting conditions
- Indoors under fluorescent lighting.
- Outdoors under bright sunlight.
| IMPORTANT | If any defects on the exterior have been identified (scratches, dings, dents and other types of body damage): Contact your Service Manager and arrange to repair defects immediately. |
Note. After removal of RAPGARD(R), some vehicles may exhibit temporary paint discoloration or paint swelling (caused by trapped moisture under the RAPGARD(R)). This temporary swelling is caused by the paint finish absorbing moisture trapped under the RAPGARD(R) Film. This swelling will disappear with exposure to the sun or heat lamps within 2 - 3 hours. Severe Paint swelling may require 2 - 3 days to recover. DO NOT buff or refinish paint for this condition!
