1.8L Turbo (A4 - Engine Code AMB)
The engine number ("Engine code" and "Serial number") can be found on the rear left of the cylinder block. (Scheme 1) Additionally there is a sticker on the timing belt guard giving the "Engine code" and the "Serial number." The engine code is also given on the vehicle data sticker

1.8L Turbo (TT - Engine Codes AMU & AWP)
The engine number ("Engine code" and "Serial number") can be found at the front next to the joint between engine and transmission. (Scheme 2) There is also a sticker on the cylinder head cover showing the engine code and serial number. The engine code is also included on the vehicle data sticker.

2.7L Turbo (A6, Allroad & S4 - Engine Code APB)
The engine code and serial number is on the machined surface on the cylinder block, at the front of the right cylinder bank. (Scheme 3) The engine code is also indicated on the vehicle data sticker.

3.0L (A4 & A6 - Engine Code AVK)
Engine identification is visible first after preparations. Remove front engine cover (arrows). (Scheme 4) A sticker containing "engine code" and "production number" (arrow) is located on the housing for vacuum diaphragm for intake manifold adjustment. (Scheme 5)
If the sticker is not present and the "engine identification" is required, remove the rear engine cover (arrows). (Scheme 6) Engine codes are stamped on rear of cylinder block, left side. (Scheme 7)
If the sticker is not present and the "engine identification" and "production number" proceed as follows. Remove bolts (arrows) and remove vacuum diaphragm for intake manifold adjustment. (Scheme 8) Remove compression spring which is behind it and set off to the side the vacuum diaphragm with connected lines. The engine code ("engine code" and production number") are located at the front of cylinder head, on top. (Scheme 9)

4.2L (A6, A8, S6 & S8 - Engine Codes AWN, BBD, AUX, & AYS)
Engine code letters and engine serial number are located on left sided of cylinder block. (Scheme 10) Engine code and serial number are also on a sticker attached to belt cover. Additionally, engine code and serial number are located on vehicle data plate.
