  1. Screw with washer assembly 3 Nm (27 in. lb)
  2. Sunroof motor Before removing, remove cover for sunroof motor in headliner.   3. Frame Before disassembling, remove headliner.   5. Wind deflector actuating spring

Removing

  1. Slide back sunroof panel to fully open position.
  2. Press wind deflector -2- out of holder -3- in direction of arrow.
  3. Pull wind deflector backward and out of roof cut-out.

Installing

  1. Hook spring -3- onto retaining pin of wind deflector -2-.
  2. Insert spring into groove of wind deflector.

Note. To clarify the illustration, holder -1- is shown removed.

  1. Push stop -1- of wind deflector -2- forward below roof cut-out. see scheme 4
  2. Insert one retaining pin of wind deflector into holder -3-.
  3. On opposite side push wind deflector in toward center of vehicle and lock other retaining pin into holder.

  1. Sliding headliner Disassemble before removing sunroof panel
  2. Sliding headliner spring Before removing, disassemble trim frame for molded headliner. To remove, unscrew countersunk screws -7- at front and rear. Push front spring -2- forward and rear spring backward off sliding headliner and remove springs. Pull sliding headliner sideways out of opposite guide rail and lift out.

  5. Sunroof panel To remove, open sunroof panel to tilt position. Remove trim on left and right. See «TRIM, REMOVING AND INSTALLING»(/audi/a6/c5-1997-2001/remont/sun-rooft-topconvertible-top/#sunroof) . Remove Torx(R) bolts (T25) from sunroof panel on left and right and lift out panel. See «SUNROOF PANEL, REMOVING»(/audi/a6/c5-1997-2001/remont/sun-rooft-topconvertible-top/#sunroof) . Adjusting.   6. Sunroof panel seal Removing. See «SUNROOF PANEL SEAL, REPLACING»(/audi/a6/c5-1997-2001/remont/sun-rooft-topconvertible-top/#sunroof) .
  7. Countersunk screw 1.5 Nm (13 in. lb)
  1. Open sunroof to tilt position.
  2. Push sliding headliner fully back.
  3. Unclip lower trim -1- at rear in direction of arrow -A- and slide it forward (arrow -B-).
  4. Pull lower trim off guide rail toward center of vehicle.
  5. Unclip trim -2- at front and center in direction of arrow.
  1. Press lower trim -1- onto upper edge (arrows) of guide rail -2-.
  2. Press lower trim -1- backward in direction of arrow until locating hook locks into actuator -2-.
  3. Press upper trim into guide plate.
  1. Remove trim.
  2. Unscrew Torx (R) bolts (T25) (arrows) on both sides and lift panel out from top. Tightening torque: 4.5 Nm +0.5 / -0 Nm (40 in. lb +4.4 / -0 in. lb)
  1. To avoid wind noise, adjust sunroof panel at front ("vorn") and rear as shown.
  2. Check height adjustment at points where rounded corners merge with straight parts of roof cut-out at front and back.

The sunroof panel should not be higher than the roof at any point at the front or lower than the roof at any point at the rear.

  1. When adjusting sunroof panel height, start by running sunroof from open position (i.e. not tilted open) into closed position.
  1. Sunroof panel -3- removed
  1. Pull seal -2- out of sunroof panel -3-.
  2. Press new seal into sunroof panel -3-, starting from center of rear edge of sunroof panel.

Note. For easier installation of the seal, lubricate the edge of the sunroof panel with a soap solution.

  1. Sunroof motor removed
  2. Harness connectors connected
  1. Move rotary control to "roof closed" position.

Sunroof motor winds to "zero" position and cuts out automatically.

  1. Install motor in this position with sunroof closed.

Checking

The "zero" position can be checked using a pocket mirror and a flashlight, with the sunroof panel installed.

  1. Trims removed
  1. Run sunroof panel back and then into closed position.
  2. Push sliding headliner fully back.
  3. Place flashlight onto sunroof panel and visually check "zero" position from side.

The "zero" position of the guide plate is correctly set if the square hole in the tilt mechanism of the guide plate -1- is aligned with the recess (arrow) in the guide rail -2-.

Adjusting

  1. Sunroof panel removed
  2. Sunroof motor removed
  3. Trims removed
  1. Slide guide plates -1- on both sides from rear to front.
  2. Align square hole in tilt mechanism of guide plate -1- with recess (arrow) in guide rail -2- for sliding headliner. This is the "zero" position.
  3. Install sunroof motor in "zero" position.

Note. For cleaning, a locally manufactured tool made from a speedometer inner cable, approx. 2300 mm (90.5 in.) long is recommended.

Note. The following list refers to see scheme 15.

  1. Front water drain hoses Routed in A-pillars and exits between door and A-pillar. Can be cleaned from sunroof cut-out
  2. Rear water drain hoses Routed in C-pillars and exits behind bumper cover at side. Can be cleaned from lower end of hose. To do so, rear bumper cover must be removed. See «REAR BUMPER, REMOVING, INSTALLING AND ASSEMBLY OVERVIEW»(/audi/a6/c5-1997-2001/remont/exterior-body-panels/#bumper) .
