DESCRIPTION
Starter is a brush-type, series-wound electric motor with an overrunning clutch and reduction gear. (Scheme 1) Field frame is enclosed by commutator end frame and drive bushing. Field frame carries pole shoes and field coils. A splined armature shaft drive end carries drive assembly.
STARTER DOES NOT CRANK ENGINE
Note. On A/T vehicles, also check park/neutral switch.
- Ensure battery is fully charged, engine-to-body ground strap is connected, and all cable connections are clean and tight. With ignition switch in crank position, check voltage at starter solenoid wire terminal. If reading is 8 volts or greater, go to step 3 . If reading is less than 8 volts, go to next step.
- Check voltage at Black/Yellow wire terminal of ignition switch. If reading is at least 8 volts, repair circuit between ignition switch and starter solenoid. If reading is less than 8 volts, replace ignition switch.
- With ignition switch in start position, check voltage at bottom (armature) terminal of starter solenoid. If reading is at least 8 volts, repair or replace starter. If reading is less than 8 volts, replace starter solenoid.
STARTER CRANKS TOO SLOWLY
Ensure battery is fully charged. Ensure all cable connections are clean and tight. Ensure ground strap, located between transmission and body, is clean and tight. Ensure engine crankcase is filled with oil of recommended viscosity. If starter still turns slowly, repair or replace starter.
REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
Note. Before disconnecting negative battery cable, obtain radio anti-theft code.
Removal & Installation (A4)
Removal and installation is basically an unbolt and bolt-on procedure. Tighten starter mounting bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 N.m).
Removal & Installation (A6)
- Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove generator assembly. See GENERATORS & REGULATORS article. Remove electrical connectors from starter solenoid.
- On vehicles with automatic transmission, remove right front wheel. On vehicles with manual transmission, remove rear noise insulator under engine compartment. On all vehicles, remove starter mounting bolts. Remove starter through opening at bottom of engine compartment. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten starter mounting bolts to 48 ft. lbs. (65 N.m).
OVERHAUL
Note. For overhaul, see exploded view of starter. (Scheme 1)
