G12 and coolant additives marked "In accordance with TL VW774 D" prevent frost and corrosion damage, scaling and also raises the boiling point of the coolant. For this reason the system must be filled year round with G12 and water in correct proportions for frost and corrosion protection.
Only use coolant G12 in accordance with TL VW774 D (colored red). NEVER mix G12 with other coolants. If the fluid in the expansion tank is brown, G12 has been mixed with another coolant and the coolant must be changed. If the radiator, heater core, cylinder head or cylinder head gasket is replaced, do not reuse old coolant.
| CAUTION | NEVER mix G12 with other coolants. If fluid in expansion tank is brown, G12 has mixed with another coolant and the coolant must be changed. |
In tropical climates, the higher boiling point of the coolant improves engine reliability when heavily loaded. The cooling system must be protected against frost to about -13°F (-25°C) or in arctic climates to about -31°F (-35°C). The concentration of G12 must not be diluted by adding water even in warmer seasons and in winter climates. The anti-freeze to water ratio must be at least 40%.
If greater frost protection is required, the amount of G12 can be increase, but only up to 60% (frost protection to about 40°F or 40°C), otherwise frost protection and cooling effectiveness are both reduced.
| CAUTION | If radiator, heater core, cylinder head or cylinder head gasket is preplaced, do NOT reuse old coolant. |
Scheme 2
- Open sealing cap on coolant expansion tank.
- Remove sound insulation panel. (Scheme 2)
- Place drain pan under engine.
- Remove lower coolant hose retaining clip and remove coolant hose from radiator. (Scheme 3)
- Open engine coolant drain screw on engine using hex ball socket (3247). (Scheme 4) NOTE: Observe disposal regulations for coolant.

- Replace coolant drain plug O-ring and install coolant drain plug into engine. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-149958-S19185449512002110400000).
- Install lower coolant hose and secure.
- Screw adapter (VAG1274/9) onto expansion tank and insert extension (VAG1274/10) into adapter. (Scheme 5)
- Loosen bleeder screw on rear coolant pipe.
- Loosen coolant hose on heater core and pull back hose until bleeder hole is no longer sealed by connection. (Scheme 6)
- Using correct mixture ratio, top off coolant until it flows out from bleeder hole in coolant hose and at bleeder screws on coolant pipes. See «COOLANT MIXTURE RATIOS»(ref-149958-S05789920532003031400000) table.
- Push coolant hose on connection and tighten.
- Close bleeder screws tight on coolant pipes.
- Install expansion tank sealing cap.
- Seat heater controls to maximum heat position.
- Start engine and maintain an engine speed of approximately 2000 RPM for approximately 3 minutes.
- Then let engine run at idle speed until lower hose on radiator becomes hot.
- Check coolant level and top-off if necessary. WARNING: The cooling system is pressurized when the engine is warm. When opening expansion tank, wear gloves with a cloth and open carefully to release system pressure slowly.
- With engine idling at normal operating temperature, coolant level must be on MAX mark. When engine is cold level must be between MIN and MAX marks.

- Remove front bumper. See «FRONT BUMPER»(ref-149958-S14944531022003031400000).
- Drain coolant at drain plug. See «DRAINING & FILLING»(ref-149958-S07423818212002110400000) under BLEEDING.
- Disengage retaining clips on connecting flange and disconnect coolant hoses from radiator. (Scheme 7)
- On vehicles equipped with automatic transmission, remove ATF lines/hoses from radiator. On all models, detach cooling lines for power steering hydraulic fluid. (Scheme 8)
- On vehicles equipped with air conditioning, disconnect air cowls from radiator (4). (Scheme 9) Remove mounting bolts for condenser (1 and 2). Disconnect harness connector (3) from A/C pressure switch. Remove condenser up out of it bracket, pivot to side and use wire to secure it to or near right-front wheel.
- On all models, release 2 retaining pins for radiator and remove upward. (Scheme 10) Pivot radiator toward front and lift out.
- To install, reverse removal procedure. Fill cooling system. See «DRAINING & FILLING»(ref-149958-S07423818212002110400000) under BLEEDING. NOTE: On vehicles with automatic transmission, check ATF level.
