Engine Audi A6 C4

Note. Obtain radio code before disconnecting battery.

Note. Remove engine, without transmission, through top of engine compartment.

Removal

1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove engine undercover. Disconnect soundproofing material holder from engine mount. Drain cooling system through drain plug at bottom left end of radiator. Remove radiator cooling fan.
2. Remove stabilizer brace from right rear corner of engine compartment. Remove air intake hose and air cleaner assembly. Disconnect wiring, hoses, lines and cables as necessary for removal. At lower left front of engine, clamp off supply line to power steering pump with Hose Clamp (3094).
3. Disconnect power steering supply hose from bracket. Remove accessory drive belt guard. Hold accessory drive belt in place with Mandrel (3204). Using a 15-mm wrench at accessory drive belt tensioner, slacken and remove accessory drive belt.
4. Disconnect power steering pressure hose from pump. Disconnect front engine mount at engine and crossmember. Remove oil filter. Disconnect and remove oil cooler under oil filter. Remove A/C compressor, leaving hoses attached. Carefully tie A/C compressor aside.
5. Disconnect exhaust pipes from exhaust manifolds. Remove 2 front bolts from engine crossmember, being prepared for crossmember to suddenly drop about 3/8". Remove front exhaust pipes with catalytic converters. Remove starter. Remove steering shaft cover.
6. Working through starter opening, remove 3 bolts securing torque converter to flexplate (A/T). Remove bellhousing bolts. Support transmission from above using Fixture (10-222 A), Suspension Fixture (10-222 A-2) and Transmission Take-Up (3147).
7. Remove right engine mount nut. Attach engine hoist to engine using Lift Fixture (2024A) connected at right rear and left front corners of engine. Lift engine slightly. Disconnect left engine support from long crossmember.
8. Lift engine carefully while turning support fixture until clear of right engine mount. Carefully pull engine forward until clearance is obtained. Lift out starter after engine is separated from transmission. Lift engine upward and out of engine compartment.

Installation

To install, reverse removal procedure. Replace all self-locking nuts. When fitting engine to transmission, use care to avoid damaging speed sensor. Tighten nuts and bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Fill and bleed cooling system. See procedures under COOLING SYSTEM BLEEDING .
