MANUFACTURER'S SUGGESTED SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE
The manufacturer recommends belt be replaced at 75,000 miles under normal driving conditions, 52,500 miles under severe driving conditions.
REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
| CAUTION | This application is an interference engine. Do not rotate camshaft or crankshaft when timing belt is removed, or engine damage may occur. |
Note. Lock carrier is slid forward onto alignment tools. This will allow servicing of front engine components. Lock carrier can be removed at technicians discretion.
Removal (A4)
Note. To ease repair work, remove front noise insulation completely.
- Raise vehicle, remove front tires. Remove bolts and quick release screws (1 and 2). (Scheme 1) Rear noise insulation (3) remains installed.
- For vehicles with auxiliary heater, remove bolts for exhaust pipe of parking/auxiliary heater at noise insulation. (Scheme 2)
- Remove right cover in engine compartment. Unbolt air guide between lock carrier and air filter on lock carrier. Remove left cover in engine compartment. Pull off hood seal from lock carrier and fender edges.
- Loosen left and right wheelhousing liners in front area. (Scheme 3) Pull back wheelhousing liner (A). Remove bolt (2) and nuts (1). Unclip bumper rear edge from catch (arrow B). (Scheme 4) Repeat procedure on opposite side of the vehicle.
- Release catches (1-4) using a screwdriver and remove air inlet grille on left and right on bottom part of bumper. (Scheme 5) Remove left and right retaining bolts until bumper is fully released. (Scheme 6)
- If installed, disconnect hose (1) to headlight cleaning system. Disconnect harness connectors (2) and remove bumper. (Scheme 7)
- Inspect headlight and turn signal electrical connectors and wiring harness (which may hang up when lock carrier is moved forward).
- On right side, remove bolt (5) and install support tool (3369) in its place. (Scheme 8)and (Scheme 9).
- On left side, install support tool (3369) in threaded hole in chassis. (Scheme 10)
- Remove on both sides, all bolts (2). (Scheme 8)
- Remove on both sides, all bolts (3 and 4). (Scheme 8) Slide lock carrier forward unit the rear bolt hole in lock carrier aligns with the forward threaded fender bolt hole.
- Secure lock carrier in this position, by placing fender bolts in holes. (Scheme 11) To install, reverse placing in service position procedure.
- Remove front engine cover. (Scheme 12) Using Ribbed Belt Installation Tool (3299) with claw for tensioner (3299/1), swing tensioner in direction of arrow. (Scheme 13) Remove ribbed belt from pulley of power steering pump.
- Remove ribbed belt tensioner. (Scheme 14) Remove ribbed belt gear of power steering vane pump (arrows) using 3212 spanner wrench as retainer. (Scheme 15)
- Remove 8 bolts attaching harmonic balancer to crankshaft and remove balancer. Remove thrust washer if equipped.
- Without disconnecting coolant hoses, remove bolts (1, 2) attaching front coolant pipe (3) and remove timing belt guards (4, 5, 6). (Scheme 16)
- Remove rear engine cover at rear of intake manifold. Remove screw attaching expansion tank to vehicle. Disconnect Engine Coolant Level (ECL) warning switch harness connector at bottom of expansion tank. Without disconnecting coolant hoses, tie expansion tank off to side.
- Disconnect Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor harness connector (1). (Scheme 17) Remove air guide hose (2) together with MAF sensor. Remove air filter housing (arrows).
- Remove bolts (1) and (3). (Scheme 18) Disconnect hose (4) from line of secondary air injection. Pull out guide tube for oil dipstick (2) from the oil pan (upper part) toward top and swing it forward for removal.
- Remove ignition coils from right valve cover. Remove hose of crankshaft housing ventilation located at rear of valve cover. Remove bolts for right valve cover in the sequence 12-1 and remove valve cover. (Scheme 19) Repeat procedure for left valve cover. (Scheme 20)
- Turn engine at crankshaft central bolt. Turn engine until the cams (arrows) at intake and exhaust camshaft of cylinder 3 (right cylinder bank) point upward uniformly. (Scheme 21) Insert Camshaft Adjuster Gauge (T40030) at camshafts of right cylinder head. (Scheme 22)
- Slightly turn crankshaft back and forth so that the claw of camshaft adjuster gauge can properly grab the camshafts. Spread and tighten camshaft adjuster gauge with threaded shaft to 7 ft. lbs. (10 N.m) until seated without axial play. Repeat procedure for left cylinder head.
- If installed, disconnect after-run coolant pump harness connector. Remove sealing plug of TDC mark at cylinder block. Install Locking Pin (T40026) into the hole of the removed sealing plug and tighten. (Scheme 23) Slightly turn crankshaft back and forth to allow locking pin to bottom in crankshaft properly.
- Pry off securing rings (1) for caps (2) at all camshaft gears. (Scheme 24) Loosen but do not remove bolts for camshaft gears.
- Using an 8 mm hex socket wrench, turn timing belt tensioner in direction of arrow until tensioning lever pushes the tensioner together far enough so holding pin (T40011) can be inserted into the bore of the piston and housing of tensioner. (Scheme 25) The timing belt tensioner is oil-dampened. Compress it by slowly applying constant pressure. Loosen bolt of eccentric pulley on opposite side of tensioner and remove timing belt.

Removal (Cabriolet)
- Loosen bolts or quick release fasteners (1 and 2). (Scheme 26) The rear noise insulation quick-release fasteners (3) remain installed. The quick-release fasteners remain in the bumper cover (1).
- Loosen the wheel housing liners on left and right at front. Pull the wheel housing liner back. Remove the bolt (2) and nuts (1). (Scheme 27) Unclip bumper extension from catch (B).
- Remove bolts and tilt front grille slightly forward and pull it out in an upward direction from bumper cover. Remove bolts (1-8) and pull side extensions out of guide piece. (Scheme 28) Pull bumper cover forward slightly.
- If equipped, disconnect hose for headlight washer unit. Disconnect connector(s) and remove bumper cover from vehicle.
- Remove left and right engine compartment covers. Remove air duct between lock carrier and air cleaner (air duct is bolted to lock carrier). Install Lock Carrier Support Tool (3369) into thread on left and right side near impact absorbers. (Scheme 9)and (Scheme 29).
- Remove bolts (4 and 5) and pull lock carrier forward. Pull lock carrier forward until rear hole in lock carrier aligns with front threaded hole in fender flange. (Scheme 11)
- Remove front engine cover. (Scheme 12) Using Ribbed Belt Installation Tool (3299) with claw for tensioner (3299/1), swing tensioner in direction of arrow. (Scheme 13) Remove ribbed belt from pulley of power steering pump.
- Remove ribbed belt tensioner. (Scheme 14) Remove ribbed belt gear of power steering vane pump (arrows) using 3212 spanner wrench as retainer. (Scheme 15) Remove 8 bolts attaching harmonic balancer to crankshaft and remove balancer. Remove thrust washer if equipped. NOTE: Thrust washer is only installed on timing belt gear with part number 06C 105 063. Thrust washer is NOT installed for timing belt gear with part number 06C 105 063 B.
- Without disconnecting coolant hoses, remove bolts (1, 2) attaching front coolant pipe (3) and remove timing belt guards (4, 5, 6). (Scheme 16)
- Remove rear engine cover at rear of intake manifold. Remove screw attaching expansion tank to vehicle. Disconnect electrical wiring to Engine Coolant Level (ECL) warning switch at bottom of expansion tank. Without disconnecting coolant hoses, tie expansion tank off to side.
- Disconnect electrical harness connector (1) at Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor. (Scheme 17) Remove air guide hose (2) together with Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor. Remove air filter housing (arrows).
- Remove bolts (1) and (3). (Scheme 18) Disconnect hose (4) from line of secondary air injection. Pull out guide tube for oil dipstick (2) from the oil pan (upper part) toward top and swing it forward for removal.
- Remove ignition coils from right valve cover. Remove hose of crankshaft housing ventilation located at rear of valve cover. Remove bolts for right valve cover in the sequence 12 to 1 and remove valve cover. (Scheme 19) Repeat procedure for left valve cover. (Scheme 20)
- Turn engine at crankshaft central bolt. Turn engine until the cams (arrows) at intake and exhaust camshaft of cylinder 3 (right cylinder bank) point upward uniformly. (Scheme 21) Insert Camshaft Adjuster Gauge (T40030) at camshafts of right cylinder head. (Scheme 22)

Removal (A6)
Note. It is not necessary to completely remove noise insulation from beneath the engine. Only remove the quick release fasteners that attach to the front bumper assembly.
- Raise and support vehicle. Remove front tires. Remove lower front engine shield (noise insulator). (Scheme 30) Loosen front half of wheel housing splash shield (liner). (Scheme 31) Remove flange nut (10) on both sides. (Scheme 32)
- For vehicles with auxiliary heater, remove bolts for exhaust pipe of parking/auxiliary heater at noise insulation. (Scheme 2)
- Remove right cover in engine compartment. Unbolt air guide between lock carrier and air filter on lock carrier. Remove left cover in engine compartment. Pull off hood seal from lock carrier and fender edges.
- Release catches (1-4) using a screwdriver and remove air inlet grille on left and right on bottom part of bumper. (Scheme 5) Remove left and right retaining bolts until bumper is fully released. (Scheme 6)
- Remove screw with washer assembly (6) from wheel housing liner (5). (Scheme 32) Disconnect any wiring harness that attach to the front bumper. Remove socket-head bolts (7) and remove bumper cover together with impact absorber towards front. (Scheme 32)
- Inspect headlight and turn signal harness connectors and wiring harness (which may hang up when lock carrier is moved forward).
- On right side, remove bolt (5) and install support tool (3369) in its place. (Scheme 8)and (Scheme 9).
- On left side, install support tool (3369) in threaded hole in chassis. (Scheme 10)
- Remove on both sides, all (2, 3 and 4) bolts. (Scheme 8) Slide lock carrier forward unit the rear bolt hole in lock carrier aligns with the forward threaded fender bolt hole.
- Secure lock carrier in this position, by placing fender bolts in holes. (Scheme 11) To install, reverse placing in service position procedure.
- Remove front engine cover. (Scheme 12) Using Ribbed Belt Installation Tool (3299) with claw for tensioner (3299/1), swing tensioner in direction of arrow. (Scheme 13) Remove ribbed belt from pulley of power steering pump.
- Remove ribbed belt tensioner. (Scheme 14) Remove ribbed belt gear of power steering vane pump using 3212 spanner wrench as retainer. (Scheme 15) Remove 8 bolts attaching harmonic balancer to crankshaft. Remove thrust washer.

- Remove bolts (1 and 3). (Scheme 18) Disconnect hose (4) from line of secondary air injection. Pull out dipstick tube (2) from the oil pan (upper part) toward top and swing it forward for removal.
- Remove ignition coils from right valve cover. Remove hose of crankshaft housing ventilation located at rear of valve cover. Remove bolts for right valve cover in the sequence 12 to 1 and remove valve cover. (Scheme 19) Repeat procedure for left valve cover. (Scheme 20)
- Turn engine at crankshaft central bolt. Turn engine until the cams (arrows) at intake and exhaust camshaft of cylinder 3 (right cylinder bank) point upward uniformly. (Scheme 21) Insert Camshaft Adjuster Gauge (T40030) at camshafts of right cylinder head. (Scheme 22)
- Slightly turn crankshaft back and forth so that the claw of camshaft adjuster gauge can properly grab the camshafts. Spread and tighten camshaft adjuster gauge with threaded shaft to 7 ft. lbs. (10 N.m) until it is seated without axial play.
- Repeat procedure for left cylinder head. If installed, disconnect electrical harness connector at after-run coolant pump. Remove sealing plug of TDC mark at cylinder block. Install Locking Pin (T40026) into the hole of the removed sealing plug and tighten. (Scheme 23) Slightly turn crankshaft back and forth to allow locking pin to bottom in crankshaft properly.

Installation (A4)
| CAUTION | Before installation, ensure camshafts are aligned, crankshaft is locked in place and camshaft gear bolts are loose as described in removal procedures. When turning camshaft, crankshaft must not be at TDC for any cylinder. Valves and/or pistons may be damaged. |
- Ensure bolts attaching the four camshaft gears are in far enough to allow camshaft gears to spin freely without wobbling. Install timing belt. (Scheme 36) For exact valve timing adjustment, the timing belt must make exact contact with front edge of all timing belt gears.
- Using Pin Wrench (3387), turn eccentric pulley (1) in clockwise direction until the handle of the pin wrench is exactly above the center axle of coolant pump gear (2). (Scheme 37) Hold pin wrench in this position and tighten bolt (3) to 33 ft. lbs. (45 N.m). Place torque wrench horizontally on socket-head of tensioning lever. Turn with 33 ft. lbs. (45 N.m) in direction of arrow to pre-tension timing belt. (Scheme 38)
- Using 8 mm socket head wrench, turn timing belt tensioning roller in opposite direction of arrow until pin (T40011) can pulled out. (Scheme 25) Place torque wrench horizontally on socket-head of tensioning lever. Turn with 18 ft. lbs. (25 N.m) in direction of arrow to tension timing belt. (Scheme 38)
- Insert Socket (T40028) at camshaft adjuster of exhaust camshaft on left cylinder bank. Turn rotor of camshaft adjuster clockwise to 7.5 ft. lbs. (10 N.m) up to stop. (Scheme 39) Turn rotor of camshaft adjuster at right cylinder bank clockwise to 7.5 ft. lbs. (10 N.m) up to stop. Torque bolts for all four camshaft gears to 74 ft. lbs. (100 N.m).
- Insert caps with new "O" rings at camshaft gears and secure with ring. Remove Camshaft Adjuster Gauge (T40030). (Scheme 22) Remove Alignment Bolt (T10026) and install sealing plug of TDC marking with new "O" ring into cylinder block. (Scheme 23) Install valve covers and tighten in sequence. (Scheme 19)and (Scheme 20). Install timing belt guards. (Scheme 16) Install harmonic balancer and ribbed belt. Torque all fasteners to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/audi/a4/b6-2000-2006/remont/timing-belt/#timing-belt-replacement-30l-avk__torque-specifications).
- To install lock carrier, reverse removal procedures outlined in «REMOVAL (A4)»(/audi/a4/b6-2000-2006/remont/timing-belt/#timing-belt-replacement-30l-avk__removal-a4). Torque all fasteners to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/audi/a4/b6-2000-2006/remont/timing-belt/#timing-belt-replacement-30l-avk__torque-specifications). Let support stop rest on rubber buffer for torque support with its own weight and tighten bolts to 21 ft. lbs. (28 N.m). (Scheme 40)
- Slide bumper onto impact absorber and re-connect hose (1) of headlight cleaning system and electrical harness connectors (2). (Scheme 7) Move bumper into installation position. Make sure threaded pins in bumper side edges engage into holes at the fenders. Install bumper retaining bolts until bumper can stay in place without any assistance.
- Do not tighten completely allowing for any necessary adjustments. Pull back wheelhousing liner (arrow A). (Scheme 3) Engage bumper rear edge into catch (arrow B). Torque nuts. Repeat procedure on opposite side of the vehicle. Torque left and right retaining bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/audi/a4/b6-2000-2006/remont/timing-belt/#timing-belt-replacement-30l-avk__torque-specifications). Install left and right air inlet grille on bumper. Remainder of installation is the reverse of removal.

(Scheme 39) Turn rotor of camshaft adjuster at right cylinder bank clockwise to 7.5 ft. lbs. (10 N.m) up to stop. Torque bolts for all four camshaft gears to 74 ft. lbs. (100 N.m).
- Insert caps with new "O" rings at camshaft gears and secure with ring. Remove Camshaft Adjuster Gauge (T40030). - To install bumper cover, reverse removal procedures outlined in «REMOVAL (CABRIOLET)»(/audi/a4/b6-2000-2006/remont/timing-belt/#timing-belt-replacement-30l-avk__removal-cabriolet). Slide bumper cover onto lock carrier and connect the hose of headlight washer unit as necessary. Reconnect connectors as necessary. Ensure that the threaded pins in the bumper side extensions engage in the holes at the fender.
- Clip in side extensions and fasten using the bolts (8). (Scheme 28) Loosely screw in bolt (3). Tighten bolts (2 and 4) to 48 INCH lbs. (6 N.m), and bolts (5, 6 and 7) to 24 INCH lbs. (3 N.m). Close hood and check overlap or gap dimension of bumper cover with respect to the hood. If okay, tighten all the bolts. If not, open hood and loosen bolts (2 or/and 4) to correct upper bumper as required. Tighten bolt (3) to 48 INCH lbs. (6 N.m).
- Verify fender gaps are as follow: A = 2 mm +/- 0.5 mm, B = 0 mm +/- 0.5 mm and C = 0 mm +/- 0.5 mm. (Scheme 41) Gap dimensions can be checked using Audi special tool (3371). Adjust gaps as necessary. Tighten all fasteners to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/audi/a4/b6-2000-2006/remont/timing-belt/#timing-belt-replacement-30l-avk__torque-specifications). Remainder of installation is the reverse of removal.
Installation (A6)

- To install lock carrier, reverse removal procedures outlined in «REMOVAL (A6)»(/audi/a4/b6-2000-2006/remont/timing-belt/#timing-belt-replacement-30l-avk__removal-a6). Torque all fasteners to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/audi/a4/b6-2000-2006/remont/timing-belt/#timing-belt-replacement-30l-avk__torque-specifications). Let support stop rest on rubber buffer for torque support with its own weight and tighten bolts to 21 ft. lbs. (28 N.m). (Scheme 40)
- Before installing the bumper, ensure the expanding clips are pressed into the fender. (Scheme 42) When installing the tabs, the bumper cover must latch into clip (4). (Scheme 32)
- Latch bumper cover (1) into guide (2). (Scheme 32) Torque flange nuts (10) to 53 INCH lbs. (6 N.m).
- Torque left and right retaining bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/audi/a4/b6-2000-2006/remont/timing-belt/#timing-belt-replacement-30l-avk__torque-specifications). Install left and right air inlet grille on bumper. Remainder of installation is the reverse of removal.
