INTRODUCTION
Note. When battery is disconnected, radio will go into anti-theft protection mode. Obtain radio anti-theft protection code from owner prior to servicing vehicle.
Note. Before replacing any component that scan tool suggests are faulty. Ensure that all wiring connections and harness connectors are okay. Ensure that power and ground circuits are functioning properly. For circuit identification, see appropriate WIRING DIAGRAM under ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article for vehicle being tested.
BODY CONTROLS
Vehicles equipped with body, air conditioning, anti-lock brake or memory computers may require a computer relearn procedure after components are replaced or the vehicle battery is disconnected. Vehicle computers memorize and store vehicle information and operation selections. When the vehicle battery is disconnected, vehicle computer memory may be lost, requiring relearning or resetting. Depending on the vehicle and how it is equipped, the following memories may exist
- Seat position.
- Tilt/telescoping steering wheel position.
- Mirror position.
- Radio presets and anti-theft code.
- Clock.
- Remote keyless entry custom features.
- Door key lock entry custom features.
- Power window or sunroof operation.
These systems do not affect vehicle operation. To reset miscellaneous body systems after battery is disconnected, see appropriate procedure under MISCELLANEOUS BODY SYSTEM RESET PROCEDURES .
Other computer relearn procedures that maybe required for vehicle or system operation may include
- Initial control unit programming.
- Traction control yaw sensor initializing (Electronic Steering).
- Multiplex communication.
- Anti-theft system or engine immobilizer system passwords.
ENGINE CONTROLS
Vehicles equipped with powertrain control computers may require a computer relearn procedure after the vehicle battery is disconnected or powertrain control computer is replaced. Vehicle computers memorize and store vehicle operation patterns for optimum driveability and performance. When the vehicle battery is disconnected, this memory is lost, which may result in a driveability problem. Depending on the vehicle and how it is equipped, the following driveability problems may exist
- Rough or unstable idle.
- Hesitation or stumble.
- Rich or lean running.
- Poor fuel mileage.
- Harsh or poor transmission/transaxle shift quality.
Default data is used until NEW data from each key start is stored. As the computer restores its memory from each new key start, driveability is restored.
Driveability problems may occur during the computer relearn stage. To accelerate computer relearn process after battery disconnect, specified computer relearn procedures should be performed.
MISCELLANEOUS BODY SYSTEM RESET PROCEDURES
Note. When battery is disconnected, radio will go into anti-theft protection mode. Obtain radio anti-theft protection code from owner prior to servicing vehicle.
BATTERY DISCONNECT
When vehicle battery is disconnected and reconnected, ignition key must be held in position 2 (Run) for about 5 seconds before starting vehicle.
CLOCK RESET
Clock and date are located in the tachometer dial. To adjust the clock pull the knob to set the hour. The hour display will flash. Set the desired hour display by turning the knob clockwise or counterclockwise. To set the minutes, pull the knob out as often as needed to make the minutes display flash. Then set minutes display by turning knob clockwise or counterclockwise. To adjust the date, pull knob out as often as needed to make day, month or year display flash. Then set the day, month or year display by turning the knob clockwise or counterclockwise. Clock will be set once display stops flashing after operating the setting knob.
POWER WINDOW ONE-TOUCH FEATURE
If the vehicle battery is disconnected and then reconnected, the automatic closing and opening function will not work until it is reactivated. To reactivate this feature, perform following steps
- Close the window completely by lifting and holding the power window switch.
- Release the switch and then lift the switch again for one second. Automatic closing/opening is now activated.
POWER SEAT MEMORY
If the vehicle battery is disconnected and then reconnected, all memorized settings will be erased. To reset power seat memory, see procedure in appropriate MEMORY MODULES or SEATS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT.
RADIO CODE
If the vehicle battery is disconnected and then reconnected, radio will require anti-theft security code to be entered. Coding instructions are located in supplementary audio systems manual supplied with owners manual.
