Removal & Installation - M/t Audi A4 B5

IDENTIFICATION

TRANSAXLE APPLICATION

1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove 3 upper engine-to-transaxle bolts. Remove ground strap at transaxle. Remove connector for speedometer sender and connector for multi-function sender by pressing in on clip. Disconnect catalytic converter connector pipe. Remove transaxle assembly protection plate. Remove front exhaust pipe from manifold. Remove engine torque arm, located near radiator.
2. Remove rear crossmember. Disconnect automatic seat belt tension cables at transaxle. Disconnect shift rod. Remove drive axle protection plate. Disconnect axle shafts at transaxle. Rotate steering to right lock, and support axle shafts using wire. Remove slave cylinder and steering bracket. Support engine and transaxle weight using Support (10-222A).
3. Support transaxle using Transaxle Jack (VAG 1383). Remove left rear transaxle strut and front engine mount. Remove lower engine-to-transaxle mounting bolts. Slide transaxle off dowels, and remove from vehicle. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten nuts and bolts to specification. 1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove 3 upper engine-to-transaxle bolts. Remove air duct. Disconnect all electrical connectors. Loosen torque support bolts at front of engine. Support engine and transaxle weight using Support (10-222A).
2. Remove crossmember. Remove exhaust. Remove shift rod from transaxle. Remove driveshaft. See «DRIVESHAFT (AWD)»(/audi/a4/b5-1994-1999/remont/manual-trans/#removal-installation-mt) . Disconnect automatic seat belt tension cables at transaxle. Remove drive axle protection plate. Disconnect axle shafts at transaxle.
3. Remove starter. Unbolt clutch slave cylinder and secure out of the way. Support transaxle using Transaxle Jack (VAG 1383). Remove transaxle support and subframe. Remove lower engine-to-transaxle bolts. Remove transaxle. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten retaining nuts and bolts to specification. 1. Remove crossmembers, heat shields and exhaust, noting position. Mark front and rear flanges to index driveshaft location. Loosen flange and center bearing bolts. Install alignment fixture (3139) and tighten plastic nuts. Remove flange bolts. Support driveshaft and fixture and remove remaining bolts. NOTE: Remove thread locking compound form threads in both flanges prior to installation. Always replace gaskets and self-locking bolts.
2. To install, reverse removal procedure and adjust driveshaft. Tighten nuts and bolts to specification. Refer to the «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/audi/a4/b5-1994-1999/remont/manual-trans/#removal-installation-mt) table.

ADJUSTMENTS

1. Remove components necessary to gain access to driveshaft. See «REMOVAL & INSTALLATION»(/audi/a4/b5-1994-1999/remont/manual-trans/#removal-installation-mt) . Install alignment fixture (3139) and tighten plastic nuts. Remove center bearing bolts and shims. Measure gap between center bearing support and body. Ensure gap is equal on both sides. 2. Push alignment fixture and driveshaft forward and back, marking farthest travel of bearing support on body. Center bearing support between marks and install shims and bolts.
