WHEEL ALIGNMENT TEST PREREQUISITES

  1. Check the suspension, steering and steering linkage for excessive play and damage.
  2. Tread depth difference may be no more than 2 mm on an axle.
  3. Tires inflated to prescribed pressure
  4. Drive the vehicle onto the alignment rack without tension. Move the vehicle back and forth if necessary to relieve any tension on the axle components.
  5. The measurement sensor must be properly adjusted and attached to the vehicle; observe device manufacturer's operating instructions.
  6. Make sure that the sliding plates and turn tables are not touching the end stop when checking the wheel alignment.
  7. Perform wheel run-out compensation: Permissible axial run-out of the wheel rims can exceed the specified toe setting tolerance. If compensation for the wheel run-out is not performed, it will not be possible to obtain a correct toe-in adjustment.
  8. The steering wheel must be "evened out" into the center position before beginning the measuring and adjusting. Use steering wheel scales VAS 6458 for this.
  9. Vehicle accurately aligned, suspension bounced and rocked several times
  10. Vehicle curb weight, refer to footnote 1
  1. Curb weight means: the weight of the vehicle ready for the road (completely filled fuel tank and windshield washer fluid reservoir, spare tire, vehicle tool kit, vehicle jack)

Treat these highly sensitive units carefully and conscientiously.

  1. If necessary, contact the manufacturer for familiarization with the proper use of the equipment.
  2. After a certain period, wheel alignment platforms and computer equipment can lose their original leveling setting and adjustments.
  3. Alignment platforms and alignment units/alignment computers should be calibrated at least once a year during maintenance.

WHEEL ALIGNMENT MEASUREMENT PROCEDURE

Special tools and workshop equipment required

  1. Alignment Computer V.A.G 1813 or VW-/Audi-approved alignment equipment
  2. Brake Pedal Actuator V.A.G 1869/2
  3. Insert Tool T10179
  4. Socket XZN 18 T10001
  5. Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing and Information System VAS 5051B Steering Wheel Scales VAS 6458

Overview

Note. Vehicle must only be measured at curb weight WHEEL ALIGNMENT TEST PREREQUISITES .

Observe the following Work Sequence!

1 - Drive the vehicle onto the alignment rack without tension. Move the vehicle back and forth if necessary to relieve any tension on the axle components.

2 - The steering wheel must be "evened out" into the center position before beginning the measuring and adjusting. Use steering wheel scales VAS 6458 for this.

3 - Front axle camber, checking and adjusting

a - Front and all wheel drive, refer to FRONT AXLE CAMBER, CENTERING

4 - Check rear axle camber and adjust if necessary.

a - Front and all wheel drive, refer to REAR AXLE CAMBER, ADJUSTING

5 - Check rear axle toe and adjust if necessary.

a - Front and all wheel drive, refer to REAR AXLE TOE, ADJUSTING

6 - Check toe in curb weight position at the front axle and adjust if necessary.

a - Front and all wheel drive, refer to FRONT AXLE TOE, ADJUSTING .

7 - If adjustments were made at the suspension during axle alignment on vehicles with ESP or ABS, calibrate the steering angle sensor -G85- and reprogram the steering. Refer to WHEEL ALIGNMENT .

8 - On vehicles with level control sensor, headlamp range control basic setting must be performed after an axle alignment. Refer to LEVEL CONTROL SYSTEM SENSOR OVERVIEW .

To do this, use the vehicle diagnostic tester.
