TRANSMISSION APPLICATION
Transmission (Except Hombre)
Check fluid at every engine oil change. Under normal conditions, manufacturer does not recommend fluid changes based on vehicle mileage. Use the TECH-II scan tool program to monitor transmission fluid condition. See TECH-II manufacturers instructions. Under severe conditions such as repeated short trips, rough roads or dusty conditions, change oil and screen at 20,000 mile intervals.
Transmission (Hombre)
Check fluid at every engine oil change. Under severe service conditions, change transmission fluid at 50,000 mile intervals.
Transfer Case
Check lubricant level every 7500 miles. Replace lubricant at 30,000 mile intervals.
Scheme 47
- Transmission is not equipped with a dipstick. Ensure vehicle is level, with engine running at idle and parking brake applied. Fluid temperature must be less than 90°F (30°C). Move gear selector through all gear positions, ending in Park.
- Let engine idle for 3 minutes and open OVERFILL screw on bottom of pan. Transmission is filled through OVERFILL screw. Fluid will seek correct level and excess should flow out from OVERFILL screw. (Scheme 47)
4L60-E Transmission (Hombre)
- Park vehicle on level surface and apply parking brake. Place selector lever in Park. Start and warm engine to normal operating temperature. Apply brake pedal and move shift lever through all gears and then return to Park.
- With engine idling, check fluid level on dipstick. Fluid level should be in "H" range or middle of cross hatched area with engine at normal operating temperature. Add fluid if necessary. DO NOT overfill.
Transfer Case (Rodeo, Passport, SLX & Trooper)
Remove fill plug from rear of passenger's side transfer case. Fluid level should be even with fill plug hole. Add fluid if necessary. Install fill plug.
Transmission
Use Dexron-III ATF on all applications.
Use engine oil SAE 5W-30 for operational temperature range up to 95°F (35°C). Use SAE 15W-40, 20W-40 or 20W-50 for operational temperatures above 50°F (10°C).

TRANSFER CASE REFILL CAPACITIES
Passport, Rodeo, SLX & Trooper (4L30-E)
Remove drain plug to drain transmission pan. Install and tighten drain plug. Remove OVERFILL screw and fill transmission through OVERFILL screw opening. Transmission is filled through OVERFILL screw. Adjust fluid level as necessary. See CHECKING FLUID LEVEL .
Hombre (4L60-E)
- Remove all oil pan bolts except 3 bolts on rear of oil pan. Loosen remaining 3 bolts to allow pan to tip downward so fluid will drain. Once fluid is drained, remove remaining oil pan bolts, oil pan and gasket. If changing oil strainer, remove bolts and oil strainer.
- Clean transmission oil pan. Install oil strainer. Tighten bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/acura/slx/i-1995-1999/remont/automatic-trans/#servicing-at__torque-specifications) . Install gasket and oil pan. Tighten oil pan bolts to specification. Add ATF through dipstick tube. Check fluid level. See «CHECKING FLUID LEVEL»(/acura/slx/i-1995-1999/remont/automatic-trans/#servicing-at) under LUBRICATION.
Remove drain plug from bottom of transfer case. Drain fluid. Install drain plug. Remove fill plug. Fill transfer case with fluid until fluid is even with fill plug hole. Install fill plug.
Hombre
- Ensure cable movement is not restricted and cable housing is routed so it does not bind. Place gear selector lever in "N" position. Pull cable end fully forward and then release it. Note that the adjustment spring should position cable to its most rearward position.
- Ensure shift lever ball stud does not move during cable installation. Connect shift cable end to ball stud. Press lock tab in to secure shift cable to bracket. If vehicle is equipped with a transfer case, bolt securing clip to case.
Passport, Rodeo, SLX & Trooper
Ensure jam nuts on selector control rod are loose. Place selector lever in "N" position. Push selector lever forward against Neutral detent. Hold selector lever in this position. Turn control rod forward jam nut until it comes in contact with boss. Tighten rear nut against selector lever boss. Install locking clip and tighten nut. Ensure gear selector operation is correct.
- Place ignition key in LOCK position and selector lever in "P" position. Adjust cable housing at gear selector bracket so .040-.080" (1-2 mm) of slack exists between lock nuts and bracket.
- Pull and hold cable housing from bracket to remove slack. With cable housing held in this position, adjust gaps between lock nuts and bracket to .2" (5 mm). Hold lock nut and cable housing on housing side and tighten lock nut on cable side to 35 INCH lbs. (4 N.m).
- Check shift lock operation. Gear selector lever should not move from "P" position with key in LOCK position. Gear selector should be able to move out of "P" position when key is in ON position and brake pedal is depressed.
- Ignition should only be able to be turned to LOCK position when gear selector lever is in "P" position. Key can be removed from switch when gear selector lever is in "P" position. Repeat adjustment procedure if necessary.
PARK/NEUTRAL SAFETY SWITCH
Note. Special Service Tool (J41364-A) is necessary to adjust switch.
Apply parking brake. Place gear selector in "P" position. Loosen switch mounting bolts. Align 3 small tangs on side of SST (J41364-A) with switch body and switch hub. Position manual shaft lever on SST tang and align switch with manual shaft lever. Tighten switch mounting bolts to 21 ft. lbs. (28 N.m). Remove SST and install manual shaft control lever. Ensure engine starts in "P" and "N" positions. Adjust switch position slightly if necessary.
Place selector lever in Neutral. Remove selector lever from mode switch. Remove cover from mode switch. Loosen switch mounting bolts. Align slot in switch housing with slot in selector shaft bushing. (Scheme 48) Insert a 3/32" diameter alignment pin into both ports and rotate switch body to feel for proper alignment. Tighten 2 mounting bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS. Remove alignment pins before moving selector lever.
