Scheme 2: How to Check for DTCs with the HDS
  1. Make sure the ignition switch is in LOCK (0).
  2. Connect the HDS to the data link connector (DLC) (A) located under the driver's side of the dashboard.
  3. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II). .
  4. Make sure the HDS communicates with the vehicle and the AcuraLink control unit (XM receiver). If it doesn't, troubleshoot the DLC circuit.
  5. Select XM/HIP in the BODY ELECTRICAL menu.
  6. Select DTCs in the XM/HIP menu
  7. Check for DTCs. If any DTCs are indicated, write down the DTCs, then go to the indicated DTC troubleshooting. If no DTCs are indicated, refer to symptom troubleshooting.

Note. After troubleshooting, clear the DTCs with the HDS. For specific operations, refer to the user's manual that came with the HDS.

SYMPTOM TROUBLESHOOTING INDEX

The AcuraLink uses the client's cell phone or XM radio to transmit and receive information about the vehicle. In addition, the AcuraLink system has a Text-To-Speech engine, and will also have the capability to initiate voice or data calls with the HandsFreeLink control unit.

The AcuraLink control unit (HIP) is very similar in design to an XM receiver that has additional communication features. The main functions include

  1. Receiving and playing XM stations. Displaying station, song title and other information on the audio unit using the GA-Net bus.
  2. Receiving XM traffic channel data.
  3. Gives "Feature Guide" tips.
  4. Receiving AcuraLink messages and displaying them in the navi display.
  5. Processing DTC (diagnostic trouble code) error messages from the PCM, the SRS and other systems and displaying them on the navi display.
  6. Sending DTC information to the AcuraLink servers using the client's cell phone (only if the client has set up and enabled this option).

Service Application

  1. Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) explanation (from server message and vehicle message)
  2. Service information message
  3. Recall Information
  4. Quick tips
  5. Place to provide feedback/view cautions that were not available when vehicle was initially sold
  6. Correction of address and full name that is registered
  7. Real time traffic information
  8. Maintenance information message
  9. Feature guide (90 days)

The AcuraLink Satellite Communication System displays and stores these types of messages on the navigation system display screen

  1. Feature Guide info
  2. System malfunction info
  3. Driver warnings
  4. Quick tips

Note. To delete any stored AcuraLink messages, follow these procedures. The first procedure is for your client. It lets him or her delete just certain types of messages. The second procedure is for service techs only. It lets you delete all stored messages. Some Important Words: The diagnostic menu includes a DATA RESET function. Select this only at TQI and when the vehicle changes ownership. It deletes all AcuraLink messages, log data, and AcuraLink registration. If you select DATA RESET during the 45-day activation period, the AcuraLink Feature Guide repeats the first message. AcuraLink messages related to a repair should be deleted after that repair is done. If you don't delete these messages, they stay in your client's AcuraLink message log.

Note. Only select "DATA RESET" from the "XM (HIP) ECU" screen when instructed. Selecting "DATA RESET" will clear the AcuraLink registration, and the AcuraLink service will reset to the factory default. If the vehicle was already registered for the AcuraLink service, it will have to be reactivated by calling Acura Client Services before all features will be available.

The AcuraLink control unit (XM receiver) has a self-diagnostic function. To run the self-diagnostic function, do the following

Note. Always check for and repair any CAN DTCs before troubleshooting the AcuraLink system.

Special Tools Required

Scheme 46: Updating the AcuraLink control unit
  1. GNA600 kit and an iN workstation with AcuraLink update software
  2. 256MB PCMCIA Memory Card
  3. AcuraLink Reprogramming Cable NOTE: Whenever you install a new AcuraLink control unit, you must update the control unit with the latest software. The GNA600 is the only tool currently available to update the AcuraLink control unit. If you are updating a control unit in a new vehicle, make sure all the fuses are installed. Make sure the iN workstation has the latest HDS software installed (The AcuraLink update software is contained in the HDS update CD. The update may take up to 60 minutes You cannot update an AcuraLink control unit with its current or previous software versions. If will only accept a new software version. Before you update the AcuraLink control unit, test the vehicle battery, and only proceed if the results are good. Make sure the battery is connected to a battery booster (not a battery charger) while updating the control unit. If the battery is not in good condition, or it dies during the updating procedure, you may damage the AcuraLink control unit. If you encounter errors in the software, follow the on-screen instructions, or if necessary, reboot the iN workstation, and try again. There are five process involved in updating the AcuraLink control unit: Setting up the GNA600 Capturing the current program ID from the AcuraLink control unit Download the new software to the GNA600 Update the software in the vehicle's AcuraLink control unit Confirm the AcuraLink self- diagnosis Do the update with the ignition switch turned to LOCK (0). To prevent damage to the AcuraLink control unit, do not operate anything electrical (brakes, head lights, etc.) during the update. Check any official Honda service website for more service information about updating the AcuraLink control unit. To update the AcuraLink control unit, you must connect the GNA600 to the AcuraLink connector (A), not the DLC. Before you update an AcuraLink control unit, read the procedure. The order of connecting and disconnecting connectors is critical, and some steps must be done within a specified period of time. If the steps are not followed exactly, you may have to repeat the procedure from the start, and in some cases, you may damage the GNA600 or the AcuraLink control unit.
