Note. If the OnStar control unit is replaced with a new unit, you must transition the replacement unit from "Shipping Mode" to "Market Mode" (see TRANSITIONING THE ONSTAR CONTROL UNIT TO MARKET MODE ), and then register the new unit with OnStar.

Begin the registration process by recording the replacement units STID and ESN serial numbers located on the unit label. Next, with the ignition switch turned ON (II), press the OnStar services button to connect to the OnStar call center. When the OnStar agent answers, provide the replacement unit's STID and ESN serial numbers. The agent will provide you with further instructions.

Note. If you cannot connect to the OnStar call center from the vehicle because of cellular network connections problems (the OnStar status light is blinking green), you must contact OnStar Technical Support at 800-ONSTAR-7 (800-677-2877) by regular phone.

Cellular network issues are indicated by, but not limited to, error messages like, "Your cellular number is not recognized" or "Please enter your credit card number now", etc.

Messages like these indicate the replacement unit's MIN or ESN is not being resolved by OnStar Technical Support.

If you cannot connect to the OnStar call center from the vehicle and the OnStar status light is solid or blinking red, see ONSTAR PANEL BUTTONS AND LIGHTS .

Control Unit Replacement

The dealer troubleshooting process for OnStar consists of these items

  1. Check fuses for OnStar system.
  2. Check continuity of wiring.
  3. OnStar diagnostic check.
  4. Vehicle interface functionality check.

If the OnStar hardware in a vehicle has been replaced, the dealer must contact OnStar technical support to register the new OnStar control unit's STID and ESN (see REGISTERING A REPLACEMENT ONSTAR UNIT ).

The dealer will do the MIN programming and confirmation process if a new MIN is provided by OnStar technical support.

Once the dealer has notified OnStar of the new ESN and MIN, and done the MIN programming process if necessary, the dealer will press the blue OnStar services button and request a configuration for the vehicle.
