SHIFT INTERLOCK SYSTEM (ALL MODELS)

Note. Transmission Control Module (TCM) or Powertrain Control Module (PCM) is used on some models.

Shift interlock system prevents shift lever from being moved from Park unless brake pedal is depressed and accelerator pedal is in idle position. In case of a malfunction, shift lever can be released by placing ignition key in key release slot near shift lever and pushing down. Voltage is provided to shift lock solenoid when ignition is on.

When brake pedal is depressed, battery voltage is applied to the PCM/TCM from brakelight switch. With accelerator pedal in idle position, voltage is applied to the PCM/TCM from the throttle position sensor. The PCM/TCM then supplies voltage to shift lock circuit in the interlock control unit. When A/T gear position switch is in Park position, interlock control unit operates shift lock solenoid by controlling the ground circuit. When shift lock solenoid is energized, shift lever is released and can be moved.

Shift lock solenoid is located on side of shift lever. A/T gear position switch is located either on side of shift lever or on side of transaxle control shaft. Interlock control unit is located behind left side of dash, near steering column.

KEY INTERLOCK SYSTEM (ALL MODELS)

Key interlock system prevents ignition key from being removed from ignition lock assembly unless shift lever is in Park. When ignition key is in ignition lock assembly, key interlock switch closes, providing voltage to key interlock solenoid and interlock control unit.

If shift lever is not in Park (parking pin switch on), interlock control unit energizes key interlock solenoid by completing ground circuit. When key interlock solenoid is energized, ignition key cannot be removed from ignition lock assembly. Key interlock switch and key interlock solenoid are located on ignition lock assembly. (Scheme 22) Parking pin switch is located on bottom of shift lever. Interlock control unit is located behind left side of dash, near steering column.

See «WIRING DIAGRAMS»(/acura/integra/iii-1993-2001/remont/automatic-trans/#automatic-transmission-shift-interlock-systems) . CAUTION: Battery voltage must be applied to correct shift lock solenoid terminal or diode inside shift lock solenoid will be damaged.
  2. On Integra, connect positive battery voltage to shift lock solenoid terminal "A" (Yellow/Blue wire) and momentarily connect solenoid terminal "B" (Yellow/Black wire). On all other models, connect positive battery voltage to shift lock solenoid terminal No. 1 (Yellow or Black/Yellow wire) and momentarily connect solenoid terminal No. 3 (Green wire) to ground. On all models, note that shift lock releases when release lever is pushed and locks when release lever is released. Replace shift lock solenoid if solenoid does not operate properly.

  2. On Accord (1997) and Civic Del Sol, connect positive battery voltage to shift lock solenoid terminal "A" (Yellow wire) and momentarily connect solenoid terminal "B" (Green or Yellow/Black wire) to ground. On Accord (1998), Civic, CR-V, Odyssey and Prelude, connect positive battery voltage to shift lock solenoid terminal No. 1 (Yellow or Yellow/Red wire) and momentarily connect solenoid terminal No. 2 (Yellow/Black, Green/Yellow or Green wire) to ground. On all models, note that shift lock releases when release lever is pushed and locks when release lever is released. Replace shift lock solenoid if solenoid does not operate properly.

Except Honda Accord (1998), Civic & Prelude

  1. Turn ignition off. Remove center console. Disconnect parking pin switch 2-pin harness connector, located near shift lock solenoid harness connector.
  2. Ensure shift lever is in Park. Using a DVOM, connect DVOM to parking pin switch 2-pin harness connector terminals. Push shift lever button. Continuity should exist. Release shift lever button. Continuity should not exist. If continuity is not as specified, replace parking pin switch.

Honda Accord (1998) & Civic

  1. Turn ignition off. Remove center console. Disconnect parking pin switch 4-pin harness connector, located near shift lock solenoid harness connector.
  2. Ensure shift lever is in Park. Using a DVOM, connect DVOM to parking pin switch harness connector terminals No. 3 (Black wire) and No. 4 (White/Black wire). Push shift lever button. Continuity should exist. Release shift lever button. Continuity should not exist. If continuity is not as specified, replace parking pin switch.
  1. Turn ignition off. Remove center console. Disconnect mode switch 8-pin harness connector. Move shift lever in "P" position. Continuity should exist between mode switch harness connector terminals No. 3 (Black/White wire) and No. 8 (White/Black wire). Move shift lever out of "P" position. Continuity should not exist.
  2. If continuity is not as specified, replace faulty A/T gear position/mode/pin switch assembly.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

CAUTIONVehicles are equipped with a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS). When servicing vehicle, use care not to cause accidental air bag deployment. All SRS electrical connections and wiring harness are covered with Yellow insulation. Related components are located in steering column, center console, instrument panel and lower panel on instrument panel. DO NOT use electrical test equipment on these circuits. It may be necessary to deactivate SRS before servicing components. See AIR BAG DEACTIVATION PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION.

Note. Honda Civic shift lock solenoid removal and installation procedures are not available from manufacturer.

  1. Remove center console. Disconnect harness connector at shift lock solenoid. Remove solenoid pin from shift lock solenoid. Remove mounting nuts and shift lock solenoid.
  2. To install, apply silicone grease to shift lock solenoid mating surfaces with shift lock extension. Install shift lock solenoid with NEW nuts snugly installed. Install pin, collar and harness connector.
  3. Turn ignition on. Depress brake pedal with accelerator pedal released. With shift lock solenoid energized (ON position), ensure clearance between top of shift lock lever and lock pin groove is.145-.185" (3.7-4.7 mm). (Scheme 31) Tighten mounting nuts to specifications. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/acura/integra/iii-1993-2001/remont/automatic-trans/#automatic-transmission-shift-interlock-systems__torque-specifications).
  4. Turn ignition off and release brake pedal. Ensure lock pin is blocked by shift lock lever. (Scheme 31) Check solenoid operation several times to ensure proper operation.

  1. Remove center console. Disconnect harness connector at shift lock solenoid. Remove gear shift knob. Remove lock nuts and through bolts, then remove A/T gear position panel. Remove mounting bolts and shift lock solenoid.
  2. To install, reverse removal procedure. Ensure there is clearance between stop pin and base bracket when solenoid is on and off. (Scheme 32) Tighten A/T gear position panel through bolt nut. Tighten shift lock solenoid mounting bolts to specifications. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(/acura/integra/iii-1993-2001/remont/automatic-trans/#automatic-transmission-shift-interlock-systems__torque-specifications).
