ENGINE MECHANICAL
Before performing any on-vehicle adjustments to fuel or ignition system, ensure engine mechanical condition is okay.
VALVE CLEARANCE
- Ensure cylinder head temperature is less than 100°F (38°C). Remove cylinder head cover, timing belt covers and distributor cap. Loosen valve adjusting screw locknut and adjust valve clearance. Tighten locknut and recheck valve clearance. Tighten valve adjusting screw locknut to 14 ft. lbs. (19 N.m). After adjusting valves, ensure crankshaft pulley bolt is tightened to 130 ft. lbs. (176 N.m).
- Align pointer on timing belt lower cover with TDC (White mark) on crankshaft pulley. "UP" marks on both camshaft sprockets should be at top of cam gears. Distributor rotor should point to No. 1 spark plug wire on cap. Adjust valves on cylinder No. 1.
- Rotate crankshaft counterclockwise 180 degrees (camshaft sprockets will rotate 90 degrees) to bring No. 3 piston to TDC on compression stroke. "UP" marks on both camshaft sprockets should be on exhaust side. Adjust valves on cylinder No. 3.
- Rotate crankshaft counterclockwise 180 degrees (camshaft sprockets will rotate 90 degrees) to bring No. 4 piston to TDC on compression stroke. "UP" marks on both camshaft sprockets should be pointing straight down. Adjust valves on cylinder No. 4.
- Rotate crankshaft counterclockwise 180 degrees (camshaft sprockets will rotate 90 degrees) to bring No. 2 piston to TDC on compression stroke. "UP" marks on both camshaft sprockets should be on intake side. Adjust valves on cylinder No. 2. VALVE CLEARANCE ADJUSTMENT Application (1) In. (mm) Intake .003-.005 (.08-.12) Exhaust .006-.008 (.16-.20) (1) Adjust valves when engine temperature is less than 100°F (38°C).
Scheme 4
- Start engine and run at 3000 RPM with no loads and transmission in Park or Neutral, until radiator fan comes on. Allow engine to idle. Locate 2-pin service check connector (behind right kick panel). Install Service Check Connector Tool (07PAZ-0010100 ), into service check connector. (Scheme 4)
- Connect inductive timing light to No. 1 spark plug wire. Ensure idle speed is within specification. See «IDLE SPEED»(/acura/integra/iii-1993-2001/remont/adjustments/#engine-controls-adjustments-except-gs-r__idle-speed) under IDLE SPEED & MIXTURE. Red (16° BTDC) mark on crankshaft pulley should align with pointer on timing belt cover.
- If Red mark and pointer are not aligned, adjust base ignition timing by turning distributor. Rotate distributor counterclockwise to advance timing and clockwise to retard timing. See «IGNITION TIMING»(/acura/integra/iii-1993-2001/remont/adjustments/#engine-controls-adjustments-except-gs-r). Tighten distributor mounting bolts to 16 ft. lbs. (22 N.m) Remove service check connector tool from service check connector. IGNITION TIMING (1) (Degrees BTDC - RED MARK @ RPM) Application (2) Man. Trans. (3) Auto. Trans. Integra 14-18 @ 700-800 14-18 @ 700-800 (1) Install Service Check Connector Tool (07PAZ-0010100 ) to service check connector before checking timing. (2) Manual transmission in "N". (3) Automatic transmission in "N" or "P".
IDLE SPEED
Note. Before setting idle speed ensure MIL has/is not been on, ignition timing is correct, spark plugs and air cleaner are okay, and PCV system is operating properly.
Note. On models equipped with Daytime Running Lights (DRL), apply parking brake, and with engine running, ensure headlights are off.
Scheme 5
Scheme 6
- Start engine and run at 3000 RPM with no loads and transmission in Park or Neutral, until radiator fan comes on. Allow engine to idle. Turn engine off. Connect tachometer. Disconnect Idle Air Control (IAC) valve 2-pin connector. (Scheme 5)
- Restart engine with accelerator pedal slightly depressed. Stabilize engine at 1000 RPM and slowly allow engine to return to idle. Check base idle speed with transmission in "N" or "P" and all accessories, including cooling fan, off. Adjust base idle speed if not as specified. See «IDLE SPEED SPECIFICATIONS»(/acura/integra/iii-1993-2001/remont/adjustments/#engine-controls-adjustments-except-gs-r). (Scheme 6) After adjusting idle speed, ensure ignition timing is within specification.
- Turn ignition off. Reconnect 2-pin IAC valve connector. Remove BACK-UP fuse (7.5-amp) in main underhood fuse box for 10 seconds to reset ECM/PCM. Start engine and allow to idle for one minute with no loads. Check curb idle speed. Curb idle speed should be as specified. See «IDLE SPEED SPECIFICATIONS»(/acura/integra/iii-1993-2001/remont/adjustments/#engine-controls-adjustments-except-gs-r).
- Turn headlights on low and other accessories off. Idle engine for one minute and check load idle speed. See «IDLE SPEED SPECIFICATIONS»(/acura/integra/iii-1993-2001/remont/adjustments/#engine-controls-adjustments-except-gs-r).
- Turn headlights off and blower motor switch to high and A/C on. Idle engine for one minute and check load idle speed again. Load idle speed should be 770-870 RPM on M/T or 790-890 RPM on A/T. (4) Transmission in "N" or "P", IAC valve connected, headlights off, blower motor switch set to high and A/C on. Idle speed should be 770-870 RPM on M/T or 790-890 RPM on A/T.
