ECM

CAUTIONThe ECM must not be removed from the car until the main relay has interrupted its power supply. This may take up to 150 seconds on Motronic 4.4 systems after the ignition has been switched off. Cars with an immobilizer can take up to 245 seconds after the ignition has been switched off.

Scheme 25
  1. As part of the anti-theft system on cars equipped with an engine immobilizer, the ECM box in the engine compartment is locked into place with a locking strip. The locking strip is installed with a security screw. (Scheme 23) Mark up the center of the screw and drill a suitable hole for a screw puller. Insert screw puller and remove the screw. Remove the security strap across the control module box cover. Clean the control module box cover carefully so that no dirt or residue falls into the box when it is opened.
  2. Check that supply from main relay has been interrupted. Easiest method is to place fingertips on idle air control valve. When the valve stops vibrating, the main relay has cut off supply to the system.
  3. Open ECM box cover and remove Motronic ECM (module nearest engine). (Scheme 24)
  4. Inspect connector pins and sockets for damage. Install ECM. Connect scan tool to DLC. (Scheme 25) Switch on ignition. Read off any Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). Erase DTCs and reset adaptive functions using scan tool.

FUEL SYSTEM

WARNINGAlways relieve fuel pressure before disconnecting any fuel injection-related component. DO NOT allow fuel to contact engine or electrical components.

FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELEASE

  1. Remove throttle pulley cover. Remove shield over valve on fuel rail. Connect Adapter (999 5484 ) to Fuel Drainage Unit (981 2270 , 2273 and 2282 ). Connect adapter to valve on fuel rail, ensuring adapter is in locked position. Start fuel drainage unit. Unlock adapter. Raise and support vehicle.
  2. Remove fuel filter valve cap located under vehicle. Connect Vent Hose (999 5480 ) to valve before fuel filter. System drain time is about 2 minutes.

FUEL FILTER (EXCEPT S70 & V70 - AWD MODELS)

Raise and support vehicle. Fuel filter is under right rear of vehicle, in front of fuel tank. Detach the snap-on couplings from the fuel filter, using a 17 mm wrench to retract the sleeves. Undo the bolt holding the clamp round the filter. Change the filter. Refit in reverse order.

Scheme 31
  1. Fuel filter on all-wheel drive models is located above the rear differential assembly. It can be accessed from inside the trunk or rear cargo compartment.
  2. Remove interior trim panels from trunk or rear cargo compartment (wagon). (Scheme 27)and (Scheme 28).
  3. Relieve fuel pressure. See «FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELEASE»(ref-15342-S20060034712000122900000).
  4. Remove access covers in trunk or cargo compartment (wagon). Undo the screws and pull the panel aside. Remove the plate with connectors. Use a screwdriver. Put the plate aside without unplugging the connectors. Unscrew the nuts and open both access covers.
  5. Unscrew the valve cap on the fuel line. Connect the Venting Hose (999 5480-2), or equivalent. (Scheme 29)
  6. Remove the fuel line connections on the fuel filter. Pull the connection sleeve slightly to free the fuel line. The fuel filter screw. Open the clamp but do not remove the screw. It should be possible to push the filter out of the holder. Leave the filter in the holder as the filter is changed from underneath. (Scheme 30)
  7. Raise the car on a lift and remove the fuel filter. Place a new fuel filter in the holder. Lower the car. (Scheme 31)
  8. Fit the fuel filter correctly and tighten the holder's screw. The fuel lines. Press the fuel line connections in place and check that they are properly secured by pulling the fuel line slightly in a lengthwise direction.
  9. Undo Venting Hose (999 5480-2). Screw the valve cap back in place.
  10. Start the engine and check that no fuel leaks are present. Rev up the engine to make sure that no air is sucked into the fuel system and thus gives rise to malfunctioning.
  11. Refit the access covers in the cargo compartment. Position the cabling in the rubber grommet so that the yellow tape marking is on the inside. Position and secure the plate with connectors. Restore the cargo compartment floor to its original condition.

FUEL PRESSURE REGULATOR (C70, S70 & V70 - EXCEPT AWD MODELS)

Note. Fuel pressure regulator is located in right side of engine compartment, above the steering gear.

INJECTORS

CAUTIONDO NOT pry on injectors with a screwdriver or pinch injector pin with pliers during removal.
