REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
| CAUTION | When battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION before disconnecting battery. |
Removal
- Disconnect negative cable.
- Remove selector knob. Pull straight up with significant force to remove.
- Raise and support vehicle. Disconnect transmission control rod. (Scheme 43)
- Remove insulating panels. Remove ash tray. Remove screws in storage compartment. Remove console mounting screws and cover under parking brake. see scheme 10 CAUTION: If vehicle is equipped with SRS, DO NOT disconnect 4-pin Yellow connector or 2-pin Orange connector.
- Disconnect harness connector and remove harness from center console. Open connector at left-hand side of selector assembly. DO NOT disconnect 4-pin Yellow connector or 2-pin Orange connector as these are for vehicle SRS.
- Remove ignition lock cable. Remove cable adjuster locking clip at gear selector lever end. Raise edge of rubber strip around gear lever and unhook cable from lever arm. Disconnect cable attachment from gear selector unit. Ensure that cable cannot become caught in gear selector unit. see scheme 12
- Remove gear selector unit screws and lift unit out.

- Remove gear selector unit. DO NOT remove shift knob. See «GEAR SELECTOR ASSEMBLY»(ref-160156-S41769504172004020200000). NOTE: Wrap tape around lower part of plastic sleeve on lever to prevent scratching.
- Move gear selector to Park and unclip solenoid with a screwdriver. see scheme 1 Lift solenoid forward and up.
- Cut clips off solenoid using cutters. DO NOT use a screwdriver to break clips as this may also break solenoid casing.
- Move gear selector to Park and press new solenoid into lower mounting. Press solenoid backward until it snaps into upper mounting.
- Install gear selector. See «GEAR SELECTOR ASSEMBLY»(ref-160156-S41769504172004020200000).
