PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION FUNCTION
Gear-shift position sensor has a start inhibit function to prevent starting of the engine while a gear is selected. This function prevents the engine being started unless Park/Neutral position (PNP) is selected. This prevents vehicle from inadvertently lurching forwards when started.
SHIFT LOCK
To prevent the gear selector being inadvertently moving from Park position, vehicles are equipped with an electrically operated shift lock function. This locks the interlock pin in the gear selector lever in interlock section, locking selector lever in Park. Figure A. To move the lever from this position, ignition must be switched on and brake pedal depressed. Switching on ignition while depressing brake pedal activates a solenoid in the gear selector unit. Solenoid lock pin is pushed in and gear selector lock button can be pressed down as usual to select another gear. See .
IGNITION SWITCH INTERLOCK
Shift Lock functions are complemented by an ignition switch interlock. System is mechanically connected to ignition switch by a cable. Keylock function is controlled by the position of the lock plunger in the ignition switch and by the position of the gear selector lever. This means that the lever must be in Park before key can be withdrawn from ignition switch, and that key must be turned to position I or II before lever can be moved from that position. Ignition switch interlock function is only available in combination with Shift Lock.
SHIFT LOCK OVERRIDE
Note. For vehicles with ignition switch interlock, ignition key must first be turned to position I or II.
In order for gear selector to be moved from Park position when vehicle lacks battery voltage, or if there is a fault in the Shift Lock mechanism, it is possible to disconnect the interlock mechanism mechanically. Mechanical release consists of a push button marked "SHIFT LOCK OVERRIDE" on the gear selector assembly. When this button is pressed, solenoid lock pin is released and gear selector can be moved from Park. In earlier models, mechanical release was located under gear selector brush beside the text "SHIFTLOCK RELEASE". Mechanical disconnect must be used together with ignition key every time gear selector is moved from Park as long as fault remains.
There is a micro-switch in the electrical circuit between the brake lamp switch and solenoid. Microswitch only closes the circuit in Park position, so that the solenoid is not activated every time the driver presses the brake pedal when driving.

IGNITION LOCK SYSTEM
Move gear shift lever to Park. Ignition key should be easy to remove from ignition lock. If key cannot be removed, cable is too short. Adjust cable sleeve at gear selector lever end until key can be removed easily.
Move gear shift lever from Park to another position. It should not be possible to remove the ignition key from ignition lock. If key can be removed, cable is too long. Adjust cable sleeve at gear lever end until key cannot be removed.
Move gear shift lever to Park and turn ignition key to position I or II. Lever should now be movable from Park. Return lever to Park and remove ignition key. Press override button. It should not be possible to move lever from Park. Override function should operate only when ignition key is in position I or II.
GEAR SELECTOR LINKAGE
- Raise and support vehicle. Working at transmission, loosen gear selector arm/control rod nut so that rod is free to move in its slot. NOTE: Parking brake must not be applied when checking selector linkage.
- Move gear selector lever to Park. Gently press lever forward to eliminate play and use support to retain lever in position.
- Press selector link on transmission backward into Park. Check that Park position is in this position by trying to turn drive shaft.
- Tighten control rod/gear lever arm nut to 18 ft. lbs. (25 N.m). Remove support from gear selector lever.
- Check adjustment. Move gear selector lever to position D. Check for clearance in direction of position N. Move lever to position 3. Check for clearance in direction of position L. Adjustment is complete if all positions are properly spaced and selector slides smoothly into each position.
Transferring Components To New Gear Selector
- Remove selector unit from housing. Remove spring clip, rubber grommet and gear lever arm. Tap out shaft. (Scheme 48)
- Remove indicator panel by pressing in rear edge to release catch. Cut off locking clips and remove light strip with indicator, cover and spacers. (Scheme 49)
- Transfer two spacers located behind light strip. Fit indicator and strip into gear selector unit. Install retaining clips. (Scheme 50)
- Install indicator panel. Ensure Shift Lock Override button is set in place correctly and is not damaged. (Scheme 51)
- Install gear selector unit into housing. Install shaft, spring clip and rubber grommet.
