Test drive form, description, (AW55-50/51SN; 2001-2004)

This schedule is intended to provide guidelines when test driving a car to evaluate complaints about the AW 50-42 automatic transmission .

Please observe all speed limits .

Before the test drive

1. Check the oil level in the transmission before test driving. See «Oil level, checking»(ref-461580-S11958059602012040200000) .
2. Check that the gear selector cannot be moved when the ignition is off .
3. Check that the gear selector cannot be moved with the ignition on and the brake pedal unaffected.

Test driving

Check the operation of the park / neutral position (PNP) switch

It should only be possible to start the engine when the gear selector is in Neutral or Park positions .

Try to start the engine with the gear selector in any other position than P or N .

Check the gear selector positions

Check that the selector engages in each position, and that it does not try to " jump" out of the selected position.

Check the back-up (reverse) gear

Back up the car in the normal way. Check that the back-up (reversing) light comes on.

Listen for mechanical noises

Start the car with gear selector in position D . Drive the car so that the transmission shifts up and down. Listen for abnormal noises from the transmission. If you hear noises, stop the test drive and return to the workshop. Fault-trace the relevant symptoms in the symptom manager.

Check function of the transmission while driving

Economy mode, Sport mode

During normal driving the transmission uses the economy mode. The transmission shifts smoothly. At fast throttle opening, the transmission moves to the sport program. This provides quicker shifting. Check that the transmission is working correctly.

Start in position D . Note whether the gears slip or shifting is hard. Check that the lock-up function engages.

Keep the car stationary on a flat road with the gear selector in N position . Release the brake and accelerate a little. Does the car move forward?

Start in position 3. Drive until third gear engages. Release the accelerator pedal. Check that there is engine braking in 2nd and 3rd gears.

Start in position L . Speed up. Check that the shift from 1st to 2nd gear takes place. Then check the downshift from 2nd to 1st gear. Check that there is engine braking.

Stop the car on a slope. Shift the gear selector to position P . Release the brake. Does the car move?

Winter (W)

Start the car with gear selector in position D . The transmission should start in third gear and give a smooth take-up from standstill. Check that the kickdown function operates.

1. The ignition must be switched off so that the control module can engage the ABS system
2. Start the engine and watch for the brake failure warning lamp. If this comes on, do not drive car. Check the brake fluid level. The hydraulic braking system must be checked for leaks if the brake fluid level is too low. Fault-trace according to the fault symptom "Brake circuit out of function, warning lamp lit" if the brake fluid level is OK.

1. Drive at a speed of at least 50 km/h. If the ABS warning lamp lights or does not go out, read off any diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) that have been stored and fault-trace accordingly. If no diagnostic trouble code (DTC)s are stored but the light comes on, fault-trace according to the fault symptoms
2. Brake several times to stop from a suitable speed on an even, dry road. At least one braking should activate ABS control from a speed above 50 km/h. Make a note of any unusual noise or abnormal behavior. Listen particularly for clicks or bangs. See whether the car pulls to one side or if the brake pedal does not seem to be working normally. Fault-trace according to the relevant symptom.

If the ABS (Anti-spin) warning indicator comes on, return to the workshop and read off any diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) which have been stored. Make a note of the driving conditions under which the warning lamp(s) came on. Carry out fault-tracing according to the diagnostic trouble code (DTC) that is stored.
