Cold Transaxle

Transaxle fluid temperature should be approximately 105°F (40°C). This is the normal temperature for a transaxle that has been idling for about 15 minutes. Check fluid level on COLD side of the dipstick. Fluid level should be MINIMUM and MAXIMUM ridges. (Scheme 24) If fluid temperature is colder than specification, fluid level may be lower on the dipstick.

Warm Transaxle

Transaxle fluid temperature should be approximately 169°F (80°C). This is the normal temperature for a transaxle that has been driven for about 30 minutes. Check fluid level on HOT side of the dipstick. Fluid level should be MINIMUM and MAXIMUM ridges. If fluid temperature is above approximately 190°F (90°C), fluid level may be above the MAXIMUM ridge on the dipstick.

Checking Procedure

Park vehicle on level surface with engine at idle. Move gear selector through all gear positions. End in "P" position. Allow engine to idle in Park for 3 minutes. Check fluid level on dipstick. (Scheme 24) Ensure fluid level is correct for transaxle temperature. If needed, add additional fluid through dipstick tube. The space the MINIMUM and MAXIMUM ridges corresponds to about.5 qt. (.5 L). DO NOT overfill transaxle.

  1. Remove the front engine cover (if applicable). Remove the cable from the battery negative terminal. Remove the cable from the battery positive terminal. Remove the battery.
  2. Remove the connectors from the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor and the assisted air control valve. (Scheme 25) Disconnect the connectors, vacuum hoses and wiring from the air cleaner housing. Remove the assisted air control valve from the air cleaner housing. Remove the inlet hose from the terminal on the MAF sensor. Remove the preheating hose.
  3. Remove the screws for the relay box. Move the box to one side. Remove the screws for the air cleaner housing. Release the clip holding the fresh air intake on the air cleaner housing. (Scheme 26) Lift off the air cleaner housing assembly.
  4. Remove the gearshift cable from the lever. Move the cable to one side. (Scheme 27) Take care not to damage the cable or sleeve by bending it excessively. Take care not to damage the cable boot.
  5. Move the gear selector to "R" position. Ensure that the gearshift cable can move freely in the engine compartment. NOTE: Do not move the gearshift cable. The position of the gearshift cable must not be altered.
  6. Set "R" position. Push the lever on the gearshift position sensor forward to position "P". (Scheme 28) Check Park by trying to roll the car. Move the lever to the "R" position. Apply a little grease to the lever pin. Do not change the position of the lever.
  7. Carefully reinstall the cable on the lever pin and studs. (Scheme 29) Ensure that neither the gear selector or lever change position. Install the nuts. Tighten alternately to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-157322-S14662941862003080800000). Install the washer and the retaining clip on the lever. Install the cable in the clip on the connector bracket.
  8. Install the air cleaner housing. Position the air cleaner housing. Install the screws for the air cleaner housing. Install the screws for the relay box. Install the preheating hose, the inlet hose and the assisted air control valve. Reconnect the vacuum hoses, connectors and wiring.
  9. Install the battery. Install the cable on the battery positive terminal and the cable on the battery negative terminal. Install the front engine cover (if applicable).

  4. Remove the gearshift cable from the lever. Move the cable to one side. (Scheme 27) Take care not to damage the cable or sleeve by bending it excessively. Take care not to damage the cable boot.
  5. Check the PNP setting. Remove the lever. Install Adjustment Tool (999 5475) on the gear shift linkage rod. (Scheme 30) Check that the shaft is in the "N" position. The groove on the tool must align with the marking on the gear position sensor. Adjust as required. Go to next step.
  6. Remove the nut for the cable duct mounting. Lift the cable duct away from the screw. Loosen the screws for the PNP sensor. Rotate the PNP sensor so that the mark on the switch aligns with the groove on the tool. (Scheme 31) Tighten the screws for the sensor. Remove the adjustment tool.
  7. Install the cable duct on the screw. Install the lever on the control shaft. Install the cable on the lever.
  8. Install the air cleaner housing. Position the air cleaner housing and install the screws. Install the screws for the relay box. Install the preheating hose, the inlet hose and the assisted air control valve. Reconnect the vacuum hoses, connectors and wiring.
