Note. Dash panel warning lights should come on as a bulb check when the ignition switch is turned to the "ON" position, and go out when the vehicle is started. Additional gauges and indicators which are self-explanatory are fitted to most dash panels.
ALTERNATOR WARNING LIGHT
The battery symbol warning light should never be on while driving. If the light comes on, check alternator belt tension as soon as possible. This light will illuminate if the alternator is not charging. Due to the design of the system, a "no charge" condition will also cause the parking brake, brake failure, and bulb failure warning lights to also light.
BRAKE FAILURE WARNING LIGHT
If light comes on while driving it indicates a low fluid level or failure in one of the braking circuits. If the brake pedal can be depressed further than normal it is an indication that one of the brake circuits is not functioning. Stop vehicle and check brake reservoir fluid level. If level is below "MIN" mark, DO NOT drive vehicle. Have it towed to a repair shop. If level is between the "MIN" and "MAX" marks, proceed cautiously to a repair shop.
OIL PRESSURE WARNING LIGHT
If light comes on while driving it indicates low oil pressure. Stop vehicle and shut engine off. Check oil level. If oil level is below minimum level DO NOT operate vehicle until oil is added. After hard driving light may come on when vehicle is at idle, but should go out when speed is increased.
BULB FAILURE WARNING LIGHT
The light will come on when any of the following bulbs are inoperative
- One Headlight Low Beam
- One Tail Light
- One Brake Light (Brake Pedal Depressed)
Check bulbs and fuses, replace as necessary. Ensure corresponding bulb on other side of vehicle is the same size, type and wattage.
"ANTI-LOCK" BRAKE SYSTEM (ABS) WARNING LIGHT
This light will light when there is a malfunction in the ABS system. Standard brake system will still function normally. Have vehicle inspected and repaired as soon as possible.
SHIFT INDICATOR LIGHT (MANUAL TRANSMISSION VEHICLES)
The Shift Indicator Light is an upward pointed arrow. When the arrow lights, it indicates the point at which shifting up to the next higher gear will result in improved gas mileage. On occasions where additional power for passing or trailer towing is desired, it will be necessary to shift up after the light comes on.
"SRS" SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM WARNING LIGHT
Indicates the self-diagnostic system has detected a fault in the SRS system. Have vehicle inspected and repaired as soon as possible.
"SERVICE" REMINDER LIGHT
This light will come on at 5000 mile intervals as a service reminder. Will remain lit for 2 minutes after the vehicle is started. The light should be reset when the vehicle is serviced.
"TURBO" BOOST PRESSURE WARNING LIGHT
If the "TURBO" warning light comes on while driving, it indicates that the boost pressure is too high. Reduce engine speed to avoid damage to engine components and have vehicle inspected for cause of problem.
"EGR" SERVICE REMINDER LIGHT
If vehicle is equipped with an EGR system, light will come on at 30,000 mile intervals as a reminder to have emission system service.
GLOW PLUG PRE-HEATING INDICATOR LIGHT (DIESEL ENGINES)
The light (looped coil symbol) will light when the key is turned to the "DRIVE/GLOW" position. It indicates the glow plugs are pre-heating. The vehicle should not be started when the light is on. The light will go off when the glow plugs are hot. Warm-up time is determined by engine temperature.
