ENGINE IDENTIFICATION
Engine is identified by sixth and seventh character of Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). The VIN is a 17 character stamped plate, attached to upper left side of instrument panel and is visible through windshield.

ENGINE CODE
Distributor
The system is equipped with an Amplifier. It is an electronic current breaker which uses firing signals from the ECU to control the current flowing to the coil. This produces a uniform and efficient spark at all times.
The distributor consist of only the cap and rotor. It only serves one function, to distribute the high tension (secondary) voltage to the appropriate cylinders.
Ignition Coil
All models are equipped with a special ignition coil with low primary resistance, but produces very high secondary voltages even with low battery voltage.
This ignition coil is also equipped with a pressure relief type plug to relieve internal pressure when coil overheats.
ENGINE COMPRESSION
Check compression with engine at normal operating temperature, spark plugs removed, throttle valve wide open and at normal cranking speed (250-300 RPM). Crank engine at least 6 revolutions per cylinder.

COMPRESSION SPECIFICATIONS
VALVE CLEARANCE
- Disconnect battery ground cable. Disconnect ignition system connector. Use a 5 mm Allen wrench to remove control pressure regulator. Lay pressure regulator on intake manifold.
- Disconnect hoses and remove oil filler cap. Remove vacuum pump. Remove air inlet duct. Remove A/C compressor bracket bolts and set compressor aside. DO NOT disconnect refrigerant hoses. Remove valve covers.
- Rotate crankshaft so that No. 1 cylinder is at TDC of compression (firing) stroke (both rocker arms for No. 1 cylinder have clearance). Adjust intake valves of cylinder Nos. 1, 2 and 4. Adjust exhaust valves of cylinder Nos. 1, 3 and 6.
- Rotate crankshaft 360 degrees (one turn). This will set No. 1 cylinder at TDC of exhaust stroke (rocker arms for No. 1 cylinder with no clearance). Adjust intake valves of cylinder Nos. 3, 5 and 6. Adjust exhaust valves of cylinder Nos. 2, 4 and 5. Install valve covers.
Note. Crankshaft pulley has 2 notches. When No. 1 cylinder is at TDC, upper notch will align with "0" notch on timing marker. Second notch is TDC for No. 6 cylinder when aligned with "0" on timing marker. (Scheme 2)

- Ground CIS (Constant Idle Speed) test point lead. Test point is Red-White wire in 2-wire connector (Green-White wire is test point for oxygen sensor). Grounding wire will set air valve wide open. (Scheme 3)
- Use air bleed knob located under throttle body to set basic idle speed to 700 RPM.
- Disconnect ground wire from CIS test point. Engine speed should increase to 750 RPM.
IDLE MIXTURE
Note. Mixture control adjustment screw opening is plugged to prevent tampering. Adjustment is NOT a normal tune-up procedure and should not be performed unless mixture control unit is replaced or vehicle fails emissions testing.
- Remove seal plug located on air mass meter. (Scheme 4)
- Disconnect oxygen sensor electrical connector. Warm engine to normal operating temperature. Set basic CO by turning adjusting screw.
- Turning adjusting screw counter-clockwise decreases CO. Turning adjusting screw clockwise increases CO. Install seal plug after adjustments.

OXYGEN SENSOR
Disconnect oxygen sensor lead and remove sensor. Coat new oxygen sensor threads with anti-seize compound. DO NOT apply anti-seize compound to slotted part of oxygen sensor. Tighten oxygen sensor to 40 ft. lbs. (55 N.m). Reconnect electrical lead.
Fuel Injection
All models are equipped with Bosch Lambda LH-Jetronic 2.2 fuel injection system with oxygen sensor.
