ENGINE IDENTIFICATION
Engine is identified by sixth and seventh character of Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). The VIN is a 17 character stamped plate, attached to upper left side of instrument panel and is visible through windshield.

ENGINE COMPRESSION
Warm engine to normal operating temperature. Disconnect single wire from negative terminal of ignition coil. Check compression with all spark plugs removed, throttle valve wide open and at normal cranking speed (250-300 RPM). Maximum variation between cylinders must not exceed 28 psi (2 kg/cm 2 ).
Note. On vehicles with LH-Jetronic injection, failure to disconnect ignition coil negative terminal may cause damage to ignition system control unit(s).
| Application | Specification | |
|---|---|---|
| Compression Ratio | ||
| Non-Turbo | 9.8:1 | |
| Turbo | 8.7:1 | |
| Compression Pressure (Minimum) | 128 psi (9 kg/cm 2 ) | |

VALVE CLEARANCE
- Remove valve cover. Turn crankshaft center bolt until camshaft is in position for firing No. 1 cylinder (TDC). Both cam lobes should point up at equally large angles. Pulley timing mark should be at zero degree mark.
- Using a feeler gauge, check valve clearance of No. 1 cylinder between camshaft lobe and adjusting discs. Intake and exhaust valves have same clearance.
- If clearances are incorrect, adjust by changing thickness of disc(s). Discs are available in .002" (.05 mm) increments. Install disc with markings facing down. Use Valve Depressor (5022) and Pliers (5026) to depress and remove disc(s).
- After valves for No. 1 cylinder are properly adjusted, rotate crankshaft to firing position for No. 3, No. 4, and No. 2 cylinders in sequence and repeat procedure. Install valve cover.

IDLE SPEED & MIXTURE
Note. The engine is equipped with CIS (Constant Idle Speed) integrated with the LH-Jetronic 2.2 system. Basic idle speed is factory preset to about 750 RPM. Adjustment under normal conditions is not necessary.
Idle Speed
- Warm engine to normal operating temperature. Turn A/C off (if equipped). On 740 and 760 models ground Red/White wire of test point connector located at right front wheel housing. (Scheme 7) On 240 models ground Blue/White wire of test point connector located by air flow meter. This will close air valve completely.
- Turn idle adjustment knob/screw to set idle speed to 700 RPM. Disconnect Red/White wire. Idle speed should increase to 730-770 RPM. Turn A/C on (if equipped). Idle speed should increase to 900 RPM.
Scheme 7
Note. Mixture adjustment is NOT a normal tune-up procedure and should not be performed unless mixture control unit is replaced or vehicle fails emissions testing.
Idle Mixture
- Warm engine to normal operating temperature. Check idle speed and ignition timing. Disconnect oxygen sensor. Check CO level.
- If CO level is incorrect, turn off engine. Drill two 5/16" holes in adjustment plug. Pull out plug with snap ring pliers. Start engine and adjust CO level. (Scheme 8)
- Turning screw counterclockwise decreases CO level. Turning screw clockwise increases level. Connect oxygen sensor lead and remove test equipment. Seal CO adjustment screw with a new plug.

All models are equipped with Bosch EZ-117K ignition system. No adjustments are required.
EMISSION CONTROL
See EMISSIONS section.
OXYGEN SENSOR REPLACEMENT
Disconnect oxygen sensor lead and remove oxygen sensor. Coat new oxygen sensor threads with anti-seize compound. DO NOT apply anti-seize compound to slotted part of oxygen sensor. Tighten oxygen sensor to 36-44 ft. lbs. (50-60 N.m). Connect oxygen sensor lead.
