Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor, checking
Note. Use only gold-plated terminals when servicing terminals in harness connector of sensors.
Recommended special tools and equipment
- VAG1526 Multimeter or VAG1715 Multimeter
- VAG1594 Connector test kit
- Wiring diagram
Requirements
- The respective fuses of Motronic Engine Control Module (ECM) -J220- must be OK
Refer to Electrical Wiring Diagrams, Troubleshooting & Component Locations
- Fuses -1, 2, 3, 4 and 7- in protective housing (plenum chamber, left) must be OK
Refer to Electrical Wiring Diagrams, Troubleshooting & Component Locations
- Battery voltage must be at least 11.5 Volts.
- All electrical consumers, e.g. lights and rear window defroster, must be switched off.
- Parking brake must be engaged or else daylight driving lights will be switched on.
- Ground (GND) connections between engine and chassis must be OK.
- Ignition switched off.
Work sequence
Cylinder bank 1
Scheme 949
- Disconnect 3-pin connectors from Camshaft Position (CMP) sensors
1 - Camshaft Position (CMP) Sensor -G40- intake camshaft
4 - Camshaft Position (CMP) Sensor 2 -G163- exhaust camshaft
Cylinder bank 2
Scheme 950
- Disconnect 3-pin connectors from Camshaft Position (CMP) sensors
1 - Camshaft Position (CMP) Sensor 4 -G301- exhaust camshaft
4 - Camshaft Position (CMP) Sensor 3 -G300- intake camshaft
Cylinder bank 1 and 2
Note. Cylinder bank 1 = in driving direction, right Cylinder bank 2 = in driving direction, left Before disconnecting harness connectors, mark allocation to component.
Checking voltage supply
- Connect multimeter to terminal 1 (B+) and 3 (Ground) of respective connector for Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor for voltage measurement.
- Switch ignition on.
Specified value: at least 4.5 V
- Switch ignition off.
If there is no voltage
- Check wiring. Refer to «Checking Wiring»(ref-255339-S23636774502007102900000) .
