FRAME & UNDERBODY

CAUTIONNever lift vehicle at engine oil pan, transmission, rear axle, front axle or floor pan to prevent serious damage.
CAUTIONHoists with liquid cushions must not be used to raise vehicle.

Support front of vehicle at floor panel reinforcement. (Scheme 11)NEVER raise the front of the vehicle at the sill panel vertical reinforcement.

Lift rear of vehicle on sill panel vertical reinforcement in the indicated area (arrow 1). (Scheme 12)The center of the floor jack or hoist pad must be aligned with marking (arrow 2). Ensure center vertical reinforcement (3) makes contact with the jack or hoist pad.

PRELIMINARY CHECKS

CAUTIONDO NOT attempt to correct alignment by straightening parts. Damaged parts must be replaced.

Before adjusting wheel alignment, check following

  1. Do not check vehicle alignment before vehicle has completed 600 to 1200 miles, to allow for coils springs to settle.
  2. Ensure tires are of same construction and tread style, equal in tread wear and overall diameter. Verify that radial and axial runout is not excessive. Inflation should be adjusted to manufacturer's specifications.
  3. Ensure there is no more than .079" (2 mm) tire tread depth difference on any axle.
  4. Steering linkage and suspension must not have excessive play. Check for wear in tie rod ends and ball joints. Springs must not be sagging. Control arm and strut rod bushings must not have excessive play.
  5. Vehicle must be on level floor with full fuel tank, no passenger load, spare tire in place and no load in trunk. Bounce front and rear end of vehicle several times. Confirm vehicle is at normal ride height.
  6. Steering wheel must be centered with wheels in straight ahead position. If required, shorten one tie rod adjusting sleeve and lengthen opposite sleeve (equal amount of turns).
  7. Wheel bearings should have the correct preload and lug nuts must be tightened to manufacturer's specifications.
  8. The fluid reservoir for the windshield/headlight washer system must be full.
  9. Ensure that sliding plates and turntables (alignment equipment) are not touching an end stop when checking wheel alignment. Test equipment must be properly adjusted and attached to the vehicle; observe device manufacturer's operating instructions.

Centering Steering Wheel On Steering Column

The steering wheel and steering column are marked at the factory. The line on the steering wheel and punch mark on the steering column must not be changed. (Scheme 13) Only then the center position of the steering rack can be guaranteed.

Vehicles Pulling To One Side

In the event that vehicle pulls to one side, cause may be that steering rack is not positioned exactly in the middle when driving straight-ahead. Therefore the steering hydraulics are providing slight power to the left or right pulling the vehicle to one side. When an alignment check is performed on a vehicle for the complaint "Vehicle pulls to one side or vehicle crabs" it is absolutely necessary to ensure that the steering rack is centered. See CENTERING STEERING RACK PROCEDURE .

Vehicles Involved In An Accident

On vehicles which have been in accidents, before checking or adjusting toe or toe constant "S", steering rack must be in midway position. See CENTERING STEERING RACK PROCEDURE .

Scheme 14: Centering Steering Rack Procedure
  1. On steering rack, remove sealing bolt and install Centering Bolt (VAG1907). (Scheme 14) See «SPECIAL TOOLS»(ref-156421-S28841897432003071600000). It may be necessary to have an assistant move steering wheel until centering hole in rack is felt.
  2. With rack locked in place, check whether steering wheel is mounted as horizontal as possible on steering column when wheels are in straight-ahead position. Reposition steering wheel, if necessary. Otherwise centering of toothed shaft cannot be guaranteed. See steering wheel centering precautions under «CENTERING STEERING WHEEL ON STEERING COLUMN»(ref-156421-S24118971202004021900000).
  3. After toe-in is set, remove Centering Bolt (VAG1907). Reinstall sealing bolt, and torque to 13 ft. lbs. (18 N.m). If steering wheel position was changed, and vehicle is equipped with Electronic Stability Program (ESP), zeroing of steering angle sensor must be performed. Front Wheel Drive

Before measuring rear camber, perform PRELIMINARY CHECKS . Camber on rear axle can be checked, but is not adjustable. If camber is not as specified, locate and replace damaged or worn suspension parts.

All Wheel Drive

Note. The maximum adjustment range of the adjustment eccentric is 90 degrees to left or right of center.

  1. Before attempting any measurments or adjustments, perform «PRELIMINARY CHECKS»(ref-156421-S07997987952003071600000).
  2. Loosen eccentric retaining nut located on the lower rear control arm. Set camber by turning eccentric nut until specified camber value is met. See «WHEEL ALIGNMENT SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-156421-S40799810522003071600000). (Scheme 15)
  3. Tighten eccentric nut. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-156421-S19724757762004021900000). Recheck rear camber.

Adjusting Toe-In Curve (All Models - Toe Constant "S")

Note. For wheel bearing housings without a groove and tie rod ends with a wiring ring, upward adjustment travel is about .08" (2 mm) less. If adjustment travel is not sufficient, then the wire ring on the tie rod end can be removed.

  1. Before attempting toe-in curve adjustment, perform «PRELIMINARY CHECKS»(ref-156421-S07997987952003071600000). On tie rod end, loosen nut "A". (Scheme 16)
  2. Unscrew bolt "B" about.160" (4 mm). Press down on tie rod end until it stops.
  3. Screw in adjustment bolt "B" until toe-in curve specified value is reached. See «WHEEL ALIGNMENT SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-156421-S40799810522003071600000).
  4. Tighten NEW hex nut "A" to 37 ft. lbs. (50 N.m). Recheck toe-in curve.
  5. Tighten bolt "B" to 62 INCH lbs. (7 N.m). Lower vehicle to initial position. Bounce vehicle several times and allow suspension to settle.
  6. Wheel alignment computer will check toe constant "S" value again. If values are as specified, set toe-in. See «TOE ADJUSTMENT FRONT»(ref-156421-S22131716042003071600000). If values are not as specified, repeat adjustment procedure.
