STARTER DOES NOT CRANK ENGINE

Note. On vehicles with automatic transmission, ensure park/neutral switch is operating properly.

STARTER CRANKS TOO SLOWLY TO START ENGINE

Ensure battery is fully charged. Check for excessive voltage drop due to loose or corroded connections. Ensure electrical and ground connections are clean and tight. If necessary, clean and tighten ground strap between transmission and body. DO NOT loosen ground strap on body. If starter still turns slowly, repair or replace starter.

BATTERY DISCONNECT PRECAUTIONS

If the connector is disconnected from the ECM or the battery is disconnected, all adaptation values in the control module are erased. DTC memory content will remain intact however. If the engine is started after this, a rough, uneven idle can result. In this case, engine must be allowed to run at idle for a few minutes or a longer road test must be performed until the adaptation procedure has been completed.

Once battery has been connected, check operation of radio, clock and convenience electronics. Completely open and close all power windows.

Note. Vehicles with On Board Diagnostics (OBD) II must have readiness code for Electronic Control Module (ECM) re-generated after battery has been disconnected. See appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.

1. Remove grill assembly and hood latch release lever. (Scheme 5)and (Scheme 6).
2. Raise and support vehicle. Remove front wheels. Remove noise insulation panel. (Scheme 7)
3. With vehicle raised, loosen appropriate front bumper cover and bumper cover carrier beam fasteners. (Scheme 8)
4. Disconnect any wiring harness that attach to front bumper. Remove front bumper cover. (Scheme 8) Remove bumper cover carrier.
5. To install, reverse removal procedure to install bumper cover. To adjust front bumper (Scheme 9) Tighten wheel bolts to 89 ft. lbs. (120 N.m).
6. To move lock carrier into service position, see «LOCK CARRIER»(ref-165669-S28361204852004090100000).

1. Raise and support vehicle. Remove front wheels. Remove noise insulation panel. (Scheme 7)
2. Inspect headlight and turn signal electrical connectors, and wiring harness (which may hang up when bumper is being removed). Remove front bumper. See «FRONT BUMPER»(ref-165669-S28361204852004090100000).
3. Unbolt air guide between lock carrier and air filter on lock carrier. Disconnect coolant fan thermal switch. Disconnect power steering cooling coil from radiator.
4. Remove bolts, and replace with Guide Rods (3411) to right and left longmember. (Scheme 10)and (Scheme 11).
5. Remove bolts (2 and 3). (Scheme 10) Lock carrier can be pulled forward approximately 4 inches (10 cm) on guide rods (3411). (Scheme 11)and (Scheme 12). To install, reverse placing in service position procedure.

Note. On vehicles equipped with restricted access to engine compartment, it may be necessary to place lock carrier support into service position. See LOCK CARRIER .

Note. Depending on engine and additional equipment, it may be necessary to loosen A/C refrigerant lines from mounting locations.

Note. Depending on engine and additional equipment, it may be necessary to loosen engine mounts, and lift engine slightly, using an engine support bridge.

Note. Depending on engine and transaxle, it may be necessary to loosen or remove automatic transaxle cooler lines.
