TESTING
Note. Camry V6 is not equipped with an electric cooling fan.
Note. On models with A/C, electric radiator cooling fans are controlled by A/C system. See appropriate article in the AIR CONDITIONING & HEAT Section for additional information.
Engine Compartment Fan (MR2 Turbo)
- Ensure engine compartment temperature is less than 113°F (45.5°C). Turn ignition on. Fan motor should not run. If fan operates, check cooling fan relays, engine compartment temperature switch and wiring.
- With ignition on, unplug engine compartment temperature switch. Fan motor should operate. If fan does not operate, check ignition main relay, cooling fan relays, cooling fan ECU, fan motor, fuse and wiring.
- Reconnect engine compartment temperature switch. Start engine and ensure engine compartment temperature is greater than 144.5°F (62.5°C). Fan motor should operate. If fan does not operate, replace engine compartment temperature switch.
Radiator Cooling Fan (Camry 4-Cylinder, Celica, Corolla, MR2, Paseo & Tercel)
- Ensure engine coolant temperature is less than STEP 1 temperature. See RADIATOR COOLING FAN QUICK TEST TEMPERATURE SPECIFICATIONS table. Turn ignition on. Fan motor should not run. If fan motor runs, check cooling fan relays, coolant temperature switch and wiring.
- With ignition on, unplug coolant temperature switch. Fan motor should operate. If fan does not operate, check cooling fan relays, fan motor, engine main relay, fuse and wiring.
- Reconnect coolant temperature switch. Start engine and ensure coolant temperature is greater than STEP 2 temperature. See RADIATOR COOLING FAN QUICK TEST TEMPERATURE SPECIFICATIONS table. Fan motor should operate. If fan does not operate, replace coolant temperature switch.

Cooling Fan ECU Circuit (MR2 Turbo)
- Disconnect wiring harness from cooling fan ECU. Engine compartment cooling fan ECU is located on rear wall of engine compartment.
- Check for continuity between wiring harness terminals and ground under conditions specified. See COOLING FAN ECU CIRCUIT TEST (MR2 TURBO) table. (Scheme 4)
Note. Cooling fan ECU controls engine compartment cooling fan on MR2 Turbo.

COOLING FAN ECU CIRCUIT TEST (MR2 TURBO)

Cooling Fan Motor (Camry 4-Cylinder, Celica, Corolla, Land Cruiser, MR2, Paseo & Tercel)
- On Land Cruiser, remove shroud from fan motor. On all models, disconnect wiring harness from fan motor.
- Connect battery and ammeter to fan motor. Fan should operate smoothly and amperage draw should be within range. See COOLING FAN MOTOR AMPERAGE DRAW SPECIFICATIONS table.

COOLING FAN MOTOR AMPERAGE DRAW SPECIFICATIONS
Cooling Fan Relay(s) (Camry, Celica, Corolla, Land Cruiser, MR2, Paseo & Tercel)
- Disconnect wiring harness from cooling fan relay. On Land Cruiser, cooling fan relay is located behind driver's side kick panel. On all other models, cooling fan relay is located in engine compartment relay/fuse box.
- Check continuity between relay terminals as shown. (Scheme 5)-7. Replace relay if continuity is not as specified.
Note. MR2 fan main relay may be tested using engine main relay test procedure. (Scheme 11)

Coolant Temperature Sensor (Camry V6 & MR2)
- Remove sensor from vehicle. Coolant temperature sensor is located in upper radiator hose coolant inlet on engine.
- Using ohmmeter, measure resistance between sensor terminals while heating sensor in coolant. See COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR RESISTANCE (CAMRY V6 & MR2) table.

COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR RESISTANCE (CAMRY V6 & MR2)
Coolant Temperature Switch (Camry 4-Cylinder, Celica, Corolla, Paseo & Tercel)
- Remove switch from vehicle. Coolant temperature switch is located in upper radiator hose coolant inlet on engine. Most switches have a single terminal. Some switches have 2 terminals.
- Place switch in container of coolant and heat container. Using ohmmeter, ensure continuity is correct between wire connector and switch body or between both terminals. See COOLANT TEMPERATURE SWITCH CONTINUITY SPECIFICATIONS table.

Remove sensor from forward section of engine compartment. Using ohmmeter, measure resistance between sensor terminals while heating sensor in water. See ENGINE COMPARTMENT TEMPERATURE SENSOR RESISTANCE (MR2 TURBO) table.

Engine Main Relay (Camry, Celica, Corolla, MR2, Paseo & Tercel)
Engine main relay supplies power to cooling fan relay. Disconnect wiring harness from engine main relay. Relay is located in engine compartment relay/fuse box. Check continuity between relay terminals as shown. (Scheme 11)
Note. Engine main relay may be called ignition main relay on MR2.

Manifold Temperature Sensor (Land Cruiser)
- Manifold temperature sensor is located on intake manifold (single Blue wire). Remove sensor from intake manifold.
- Heat sensor slowly in water while checking continuity between wire terminal and sensor body. See MANIFOLD TEMPERATURE SENSOR RESISTANCE (LAND CRUISER) table. Replace sensor if resistance is not as specified.
