CARBURETOR IDENTIFICATION

ADJUSTMENTS

Note. For all on-vehicle adjustments not covered in this article, see appropriate TUNE-UP PROCEDURES article. Manufacturer recommends Carburetor Adjustment Kit (0924000014 and 09240-00020) for carburetor adjustment.

FLOAT LEVEL

Allow float to hang by its own weight. Using Carburetor Adjusting Gauge Set (09240-00014), check clearance between float tip and carburetor body. (Scheme 116) Measurement should be taken without a gasket on air horn. Proper upper position float level is.169" (4.3 mm). To adjust, bend portion of float tip.

FLOAT DROP

Lift up float. Using Wire Gauge Set (09240-00020), check clearance between needle valve plunger and float lip. Proper lower position float level is.035-.043" (.9-1.1 mm). To adjust, bend portion of float tip. (Scheme 117)

THROTTLE VALVE OPENING

Check full opening angle of throttle valve. From a horizontal plane, standard angle is 87-93 degrees. To adjust, bend throttle lever stopper.

UNLOADER

Apply vacuum to throttle positioner diaphragms. With throttle valve fully opened, measure piston lift stroke. Standard stroke is at least.31" (8.0 mm). (Scheme 118)

Scheme 119: FAST IDLE SETTING
  1. Set fast idle adjusting cam to roller of throttle lever. Measure throttle valve angle. On manual transmission equipped vehicles, reference angle is 18.7 degrees from horizontal plane. On automatic transmission equipped vehicles, reference angle is 19 degrees from horizontal plane.
  2. To adjust, turn No. 1 fast idle adjusting screw. Separate fast idle adjusting cam from 1st idle lever. Using a screwdriver, pry open at least a.20" (5.0 mm) gap between fast idle cam and cold enrichment rod. (Scheme 119) Allow gap to close.
  3. Flush out compensator water pipe with water. Apply vacuum to throttle positioner diaphragm and measure throttle angle. Determine throttle valve angle as is based upon water temperature. See WATER TEMPERATURE/THROTTLE VALVE ANGLE table. Once angle has been selected, adjust by turning No. 2 fast idle adjusting screw.

WATER TEMPERATURE/THROTTLE VALVE ANGLE

THROTTLE POSITIONER SETTING

Remove wax back springs and separate fast idle cam from thermo wax. Measure throttle valve angle. Reference angle is 13.2 degrees from horizontal plane or 1400 RPM. Turn adjusting screw and adjust throttle positioner. Install wax back springs. Ensure spring hooks do not overlap. (Scheme 120)

PUMP STROKE

Apply vacuum to throttle positioner diaphragms. Measure stroke length. Standard stroke is.197-.236" (5.0-6.0 mm). (Scheme 121) Adjust pump stroke by bending connecting link.

THROTTLE POSITION SWITCH

  1. Ensure fast idle cam and auxiliary fast idle cam do not move. If fast idle auxiliary cam does move, remove wax back spring. Apply vacuum to throttle positioner diaphragms. (Scheme 122) Connect ohmmeter probes to connector and switch body.
  2. With throttle valve fully open, ensure continuity is present between connector and switch body. (Scheme 123) Slowly close throttle valve. At point where no continuity is present, measure throttle valve angle. Standard angle is 11.5 degrees from horizontal plane. If not correct, adjust throttle position switch adjuster screw.

  1. Remove air cleaner support, solenoid valve, throttle position switch and nipple union. Remove 3 screws, compensator and gasket. NOTE: Compensator removal is not recommended unless replacement is necessary.
  2. Pry off suction chamber adjusting pin with a screwdriver. (Scheme 125) Remove "O" ring. Turn carburetor over and shake pin out. Remove 3 screws and pull out suction chamber, spring and piston from carburetor body.
  3. Remove pump arm clip, pump arm pivot screw and pump arm. (Scheme 126) Remove bushing and spring from connecting rod. Disconnect fuel heater wire. To remove float bowl, remove 5 screws, union nipple clamp, throttle valve solenoid, wire clamp, washer, number plate, EGR vacuum modulator bracket and float bowl. Remove pump damping spring from float bowl.
  4. Remove float pivot pin, float and needle valve subassembly. Remove float bowl gasket. Remove needle valve seat and gasket. Remove throttle positioner, adapter and gasket.

CLEANING

Note. Do not immerse synthetic parts, electrical components or diaphragm assemblies in carburetor cleaner.

Remove carbon from around throttle valve and clean cast parts with carburetor cleaner. Clean jets, fuel passages and vacuum ports with compressed air. Do not use wire or similar metal objects. Clean all other parts with solvent and soft brush.

Float & Needle Valve

Check pivot pin for scratches and excessive wear. Check float for broken lips and wear in pivot holes. Check spring for breaks and deformation. Check needle valve and plunger for wear or damage. Check strainer for rust and tears.

Suction Chamber & Piston

Check suction chamber for damage and scratches. Check piston and metering needle for damage and wear.

Solenoid Valve

  1. Connect Black wire to battery positive terminal and solenoid valve body to battery negative terminal. A click should be felt from solenoid valve.
  2. Connect White/Black wire to battery negative terminal and solenoid valve body to negative. Solenoid valve should click when battery power is connected and disconnected. If solenoid valve is not operating properly, replacement is necessary

Use an ohmmeter and check continuity between connector and switch body. With rod pushed in, no continuity should be present. With rod not pushed in, continuity should be present.

Fuel Heater & Cold Mixture Heater (CMH)

  1. Using an ohmmeter, measure resistance between float bowl terminals. Fuel heater resistance at 68°F (20°C) should be 2-6 ohms.If resistance is not within specification, float bowl should be replaced.
  2. Using an ohmmeter, measure resistance between terminals of Cold Mixture Heater (CMH). CMH resistance at 68°F (20°C) should be .5-2.2 ohms. If resistance is not correct, float bowl should be replaced.

Throttle Valve Solenoid Actuator

Push in actuator rod and release. Ensure rod returns immediately to original position. Connect battery voltage to solenoid terminals. (Scheme 127) Attempt to depress push rod with finger. Push rod should be locked.

REASSEMBLY

To reassemble, reverse disassembly procedure. Ensure new gaskets and "O" rings are used.
