BALL JOINT CHECKING

  1. Inspect ball joints for wear. Raise and support front of vehicle. Allow suspension to hang freely. Set front wheels to straight-ahead position. Press brake pedal.
  2. Remove front wheel and install hub nuts to disc. Measure upper lower ball joint vertical play. Replace ball joint if vertical movement exceeds 0.020 in. (.50 mm).
  3. Measure rotating torque of ball joint with joint removed from vehicle. Flip joint stud back and forth 5 times. Install ball joint stud nut.
  4. Using INCH-lbs. torque wrench, rotate ball joint stud continuously one revolution per 2-4 seconds while measuring rotating torque. Replace ball joint if rotating torque exceeds specification. RIDING HEIGHT

Riding height will differ, depending on model and vehicle tire size. Loaded and unloaded vehicle ride heights are adjusted for individual vehicles. See WHEEL ALIGNMENT SPECIFICATIONS & PROCEDURES .

FRONT WHEEL BEARING

Remove hub and knuckle. See removal under HUB & KNUCKLE .

Diassembly

  1. Mount the axle hub in a soft jaw vise. On 2WD models, using a screwdriver, remove the grease cap. On 4WD models, using a screwdriver, remove the oil seal (inside). (Scheme 5)and (Scheme 6).
  2. On 2WD models, remove lock nut and remove the ABS speed sensor rotor/spacer. Using a chisel and hammer, loosen the staked part of the lock nut. Using Special Tool (09318-12010), remove the lock nut. Remove the ABS speed sensor rotor/spacer. (Scheme 6) NOTE: Be careful not to damage the bushing. NOTE: Take care not to scratch the serration of the speed sensor rotor.
  3. On all models, remove the 4 bolts and shift the dust cover towards the hub side (outside). Using Special Tool (09710-30021, 09710-03051, 09950-40011, 09951-04020, 09952-04010, 09953-04020, 09954-04010, 09955-04031, 09957-04010, 09958-04011), remove the axle hub from the steering knuckle. Remove the dust cover from the steering knuckle.
  4. On 4WD models, remove the bearing spacer and ABS speed sensor rotor. (Scheme 5) NOTE: Take care not to scratch the serration of the speed sensor rotor.
  5. On all models, remove oil seal (outside). Using a screwdriver, remove the oil seal (outside) from the steering knuckle.
  6. Using snap ring pliers, remove the snap ring. Using Special Tool (09950-60020, 09951-00810, 09950-70010, 09951-07150) and a press, remove the bearing from the steering knuckle. (Scheme 6)
