- REMOVE RH ENGINE UNDER COVER
- REMOVE AIR CLEANER ASSEMBLY
- REMOVE CYLINDER HEAD COVER
- SET NO. 1 CYLINDER TO TDC/COMPRESSION Turn the crankshaft pulley, and align its groove with timing mark 0 of the timing chain cover. Check that the timing marks of the camshaft timing sprocket and VVT timing sprocket are aligned with the timing marks of the No. 1 and No. 2 bearing caps (Scheme 2) If not, turn the crankshaft 1 revolution (360°) and align the marks as above.
- INSPECT VALVE CLEARANCE Check only the valves indicated. Using a feeler gauge, measure the clearance between the valve lifter and camshaft. Record the out-of-specification valve clearance measurements. They will be used later to determine the required replacement adjusting valve lifter. Valve clearance (Cold): VALVE CLEARANCE (COLD) SPECIFICATIONS Intake 0.19 to 0.29 mm (0.008 to 0.011 in.) Exhaust 0.30 to 0.40 mm (0.012 to 0.016 in.) Turn the crankshaft 1 revolution (360°) and align the mark as above (see step 4 ). Check only the valves indicated (Scheme 4) Measure the valve clearance (see step a ).
- ADJUST VALVE CLEARANCE Set the No. 1 cylinder to the TDC/compression (See step 4 ). Place matchmarks on the timing chain and camshaft timing sprockets. Remove the 2 nuts, gasket and chain tensioner. Hold the hexagonal head portion of the camshaft with a wrench, and loosen the camshaft timing sprocket bolt. NOTE: Be careful not to damage the cylinder head and valve lifter with the wrench. Uniformly loosen and remove the 10 camshaft bearing cap bolts in several passes, in the sequence (Scheme 7) Remove the 5 camshaft bearing caps. Raising the camshaft, remove the camshaft timing sprocket bolt. Disconnect the camshaft timing sprocket together with the timing chain from the exhaust camshaft. Remove the camshaft timing sprocket from the timing chain. Uniformly loosen and remove the 10 camshaft bearing cap bolts in several passes, in the sequence (Scheme 9) Remove the 5 camshaft bearing caps. Disconnect the timing chain from the VVT timing sprocket, and remove the intake camshaft with the VVT timing sprocket. Tie the timing chain (Scheme 10) NOTE: Be careful not to drop anything inside the timing chain cover. Do not allow the chain to come into contact with water or dust. Remove the valve lifter. Determine the replacement valve lifter size according to these Formula or Charts: Using a micrometer, measure the thickness of the removed lifter. Calculate the thickness of a new lifter so the valve clearance comes within the specified value. T......... Thickness of used lifter A......... Measured valve clearance N......... Thickness of new lifter VALVE LIFTER SIZE FORMULA CHART Intake N = T + (A - 0.24 mm (0.009 in.)) Exhaust N = T + (A - 0.35 mm (0.014 in.)) Select a new lifter with a thickness as close as possible to the calculated values. HINT: Valve lifters are available in 35 sizes in increments of 0.020 mm (0.0008 in.), from 5.060 mm (0.1992 in.) to 5.740 mm (0.2260 in.). Identification number inside the valve lifter shows the value of the 2 decimal places (In (Scheme 12) shows 5.380 mm (0.2118 in.). Apply a light coat engine oil to new valve lifter. Reinstall the valve lifter. Align the crankshaft pulley groove with timing mark 0 of the timing chain cover. Hold the timing chain.
- REINSTALL INTAKE CAMSHAFT Align the matchmarks on the timing chain and VVT timing sprocket (See step b ), and place the intake camshaft on the cylinder head. Apply a light coat engine oil on the threads and under the camshaft bearing cap bolts. Install the 5 intake camshaft bearing caps in their proper locations (see «INSTALLATION»(ref-181073-S36220544492005073000000) ). Uniformly tighten the 10 bearing cap bolts in several passes, in the sequence (Scheme 17) Torque: 30 N.m (301 kgf.cm, 22 ft.lbf) for bolt A 9.0 N.m (92 kgf.cm, 80 in.lbf) for others Align the matchmarks on the timing chain and camshaft timing sprocket (See step b ), and install them.
- REINSTALL EXAHUST CAMSHAFT Temporarily install the camshaft timing sprocket with the timing chain to the exhaust camshaft with the bolt. Place the exhaust camshaft on the cylinder head. Apply a light coat engine oil on the threads and under the camshaft bearing cap bolts. Install the 5 exhaust camshaft bearing caps in their proper locations (see «INSTALLATION»(ref-181073-S36220544492005073000000) ). Uniformly tighten the 10 bearing cap bolts in several passes, in the sequence (Scheme 18) Torque: 30 N.m (301 kgf.cm, 22 ft.lbf) for bolt A 9.0 N.m (92 kgf.cm, 80 in.lbf) for others Hold the hexagon head portion of the exhaust camshaft with a wrench, and tighten the bolt. Torque: 54 N.m (551 kgf.cm, 40 ft.lbf) Check that the each sprocket aligned with the match-marks (Scheme 20) Install the chain tensioner (see «INSTALLATION»(ref-181073-S01524243892005073000000) ). Recheck the valve clearance (see step 5 ). Check the valve timing (see «INSTALLATION»(ref-181073-S01524243892005073000000) ).

- WARM UP ENGINE Allow the engine to warm up to normal operating temperature.
- CHECK IDLE SPEED (See «INSPECTION»(ref-181073-S21754240022005073000000) )
- CONNECT TIMING LIGHT Connect the tester probe of a timing light to the black-white service wire of the engine wire (Scheme 21)
- INSPECT IGNITION TIMING Using SST, connect terminals to TC and CG of the DLC3. SST 09843-18040 HINT: After engine rpm is kept at 900 - 1,500 rpm for 5 seconds, check that it returns to idle speed. Using a timing light, check the ignition timing. Ignition timing: 8 to 12° BTDC @ idle Remove the SST from the DLC3.
- FURTHER CHECK IGNITION TIMING Ignition timing: 5 to 15° BTDC @ idle HINT: The timing mark moves in a range between 5 and 15°.

- CONNECT HAND-HELD TESTER OR OBD II SCAN TOOL Connect the hand-held tester or OBD II scan tool to the DLC3. Please refer to the hand-held tester or OBD II scan tool operator's for further details.
- INSPECT IDLE SPEED Race the engine at 2,500 RPM for approx. 90 seconds. Check the idle speed. Idle speed W/Cooling fan OFF): IDLE SPEED (W/COOLING FAN OFF) SPECIFICATIONS AT 610 to 710 RPM MT 610 +/- 710 RPM If the idle speed is not as specified, check the air intake system.
