ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION

CAUTIONWhen removing deposits on the throttle body, be sure to remove the connector or remove the battery.

  1. INSPECT SYSTEM OPERATION Inspect the throttle control motor operating sound. Turn the ignition switch ON. When turning the accelerator pedal position sensor lever, check the running sound of the motor. Also, check that there is no friction sound. If the result is not as specified, check the throttle control motor (see step 2), wiring and ECM. Inspect the accelerator pedal position sensor. Connect the hand-held tester or OBD II scan tool to the DLC3. Turn the ignition switch ON. Make sure that the check engine warning lamp (CHK ENG) does not illuminate. When turning the accelerator pedal position sensor lever to the full-open position, make sure that the CURRENT DATA throttle valve opening percentage (THROTTLE POS) shows the standard value below. Standard throttle valve opening percentage: 60 % or more If the result is not as specified, check that the accelerator pedal position sensor (see step 4 ), wiring and ECM.
  2. INSPECT THROTTLE CONTROL MOTOR RESISTANCE Disconnect the connector. Using an ohmmeter, measure the resistance between the terminals. Resistance: 0.3 to 100 ohm at 20°C (68°F) If the result is not as specified, replace the throttle body.
  3. INSPECT THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR (See «DTC P0120: THROTTLE/PEDAL POSITION SENSOR/SWITCH "A" CIRCUIT MALFUNCTION, DTC P0122 THROTTLE/PEDAL POSITION SENSOR/SWITCH "A" CIRCUIT LOW INPUT, DTC P0123 THROTTLE/PEDAL POSITION SENSOR/SWITCH "A" CIRCUIT HIGH INPUT, DTC P0220 THROTTLE/PEDAL POSITION SENSOR/SWITCH "B" CIRCUIT MALFUNCTION, DTC P0222 THROTTLE/PEDAL POSITION SENSOR/SWITCH "B" CIRCUIT LOW INPUT, DTC P0223 THROTTLE/PEDAL POSITION SENSOR/SWITCH "B" CIRCUIT HIGH INPUT, DTC P2135 THROTTLE/PEDAL POSITION SENSOR/SWITCH "A"/"B" VOLTAGE CORRECTION»(ref-180979-S13381517132005073000000) ) If necessary, replace the throttle body assembly (see «REMOVAL»(ref-239091-S26396867692006072600000) and «INSTALLATION»(ref-239091-S27598536672006072600000) ).
  4. INSPECT ACCELERATOR PEDAL POSITION SENSOR (See «INSPECT ACCELERATOR PEDAL POSITION SENSOR»(ref-239091-S21309727382006072600000) ) If necessary, replace the accelerator pedal assembly (see «REMOVAL»(ref-239091-S26396867692006072600000) and «INSTALLATION»(ref-239091-S27598536672006072600000) ).

  1. DRAIN ENGINE COOLANT
  2. REMOVE AIR CLEANER INLET AND AIR CLEANER ASSEMBLY WITH MAF METER Disconnect the MAF meter connector. Disconnect the VSV hose for CCV. Remove the 3 bolts and air cleaner inlet, air cleaner assembly and MAF meter together in one piece.
  3. REMOVE AIR CLEANER HOSE AND PCV HOSE Disconnect the VSV connector for EVAP. Disconnect the VSV hose for EVAP. Disconnect the PCV hose. Remove the air cleaner hose.
  4. REMOVE THROTTLE BODY Disconnect the throttle position sensor & control motor connector. Disconnect the 5 hoses. Remove the 4 bolts, bracket and throttle body from the intake manifold. Remove the gasket.

  1. INSTALL THROTTLE BODY Install a new gasket on the intake manifold (Scheme 7) Install the throttle body, bracket and fuel hose clamp with the 4 bolts. Torque: 30 N.m (305 kgf.cm, 22 ft.lbf) Connect the 5 hoses to the throttle body. Connect the throttle position sensor & control motor connector.
  2. INSTALL AIR CLEANER HOSE
  3. INSTALL AIR CLEANER ASSEMBLY WITH MAF METER AND BRACKET
  4. FILL RADIATOR WITH ENGINE COOLANT

Scheme 10: Inspect Camshaft Timing Oil Control Valve (OCV) Resistance
  1. Disconnect the OCV connector.
  2. Using an ohmmeter, measure the resistance between the terminals. Resistance: 6.9 to 7.9 ohm at 20°C (68°F) If the resistance is not as specified, replace the OCV.
  3. Reconnect the OCV connector.

  1. REMOVE CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE (OCV) Disconnect the OCV connector. Remove the bolt and OCV. Remove the O-ring from the OCV.
  2. INSPECT CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE (OCV) OPERATION Connect the battery's positive (+) lead to terminal 1 and negative (-) lead to terminal 2. Check the movement of the valve (Scheme 13)and (Scheme 14). If operation is not as specified, replace the OCV.
  3. REINSTALL CAMSHAFT OIL CONTROL VALVE (OCV) Install a new O-ring to the OCV. Install the OCV completely, and tighten the bolt. Torque: 9.0 N.m (90 kgf.cm, 80 in.lbf) Connect the OCV connector.

  1. REMOVE RELAY BOX COVER
  2. REMOVE EFI MAIN RELAY
  3. INSPECT EFI MAIN RELAY Inspect the relay continuity. Using an ohmmeter, check that there is continuity between terminals 1 and 2. If there is no continuity, replace the relay. Check that there is no continuity between terminals 3 and 5. If there is continuity, replace the relay. Inspect the relay operation. Apply battery positive voltage to terminals 1 and 2. Using an ohmmeter, check that there is continuity between terminals 3 and 5. If there is no continuity, replace the relay.

  3. INSPECT A/F SENSOR HEATER RELAY Inspect the relay continuity. Using an ohmmeter, check that there is continuity between terminals 1 and 2. If there is no continuity, replace the relay. Check that there is no continuity between terminals 3 and 5. If there is continuity, replace the relay. Inspect the relay operation. Apply battery positive voltage to terminals 1 and 2. Using an ohmmeter, check that there is continuity between terminals 3 and 5. If there is no continuity, replace the relay.

  2. INSPECT VSV Inspect the VSV for open circuit. Using an ohmmeter, check that there is continuity between the terminals. Resistance: 30 to 34 ohm at 20°C (68°F) If there is no continuity, replace the VSV. Inspect the VSV for ground. Using an ohmmeter, check that there is no continuity between each terminal and the VSV body. If there is continuity, replace the VSV. Inspect the VSV operation. Check that air flows with a little difficulty from ports E to F. Apply battery positive voltage to the terminals. Check that air flows from ports E to F. If the operation is not as specified, replace the VSV.

Check that air flows from ports E to F. Apply battery positive voltage to the terminals. Check that air does not flow from ports E to F. If the operation is not as specified, replace the VSV.

  2. INSPECT VSV Inspect the VSV for open circuit. Using an ohmmeter, measure the resistance between the terminals. Resistance: 30 to 36 ohm at 20°C (68°F) If the result is not as specified, replace the VSV. Inspect the VSV for ground. Using an ohmmeter, check that there is no continuity between each terminal and the VSV body. If the result is not as specified, replace the VSV. Inspect the VSV operation. Check that air does not flow from ports E to F. Apply battery positive voltage to the terminals. Check that air flows from ports E to F. If the operation is not as specified, replace the VSV.

  1. DRAIN ENGINE COOLANT
  2. REMOVE ECT SENSOR Disconnect the sensor connector. Using a 19 mm deep socket wrench, remove the sensor and gasket.
  3. INSPECT ECT SENSOR Using an ohmmeter, measure the resistance between the terminals. Resistance: (Scheme 41)If the resistance is not as specified, replace the sensor.
  4. REINSTALL ECT SENSOR Install a new gasket to the sensor. Using a 19 mm deep socket wrench, install the sensor. Torque: 20 N.m (200 kgf.cm, 15 ft.lbf) Connect the sensor connector.
  5. REFILL WITH ENGINE COOLANT

  1. REMOVE LUGGAGE COMPARTMENT BOX
  2. REMOVE FLOOR SERVICE HOLE COVER
  3. REMOVE VAPOR PRESSURE SENSOR Remove the 2 bolts and No. 3 fuel tank protector. Disconnect the vapor pressure sensor connector. Remove the clip and vapor pressure sensor.
  4. INSPECT VAPOR PRESSURE SENSOR Turn the ignition switch ON. Using a voltmeter, measure the voltage between terminals VC and E2 of the wiring harness side connector. Voltage: 4.5 to 5.5 V Turn the ignition switch OFF.
  5. INSPECT POWER OUTPUT OF VAPOR PRESSURE SENSOR Connect the vapor pressure sensor connector. Turn the ignition switch ON. Connect a voltmeter to terminals PTNK and E2 of the ECM, and measure the output voltage under the following conditions: Apply vacuum (2.0 kPa (15 mmHg, 0.59 in.Hg)) to the vapor pressure sensor. Voltage: 1.3 to 2.1 V Release the vacuum from the vapor pressure sensor. Voltage: 3.0 to 3.6 V Apply pressure (1.5 kPa (15 gf/cm 2 , 0.22 psi)) to the vapor pressure sensor. Voltage: 4.2 to 4.8 V Turn the ignition switch OFF.
  6. REINSTALL VAPOR PRESSURE SENSOR Reinstall the vapor pressure sensor and clip. Reconnect the vapor pressure sensor connector. Reinstall the 2 bolts and No. 3 fuel tank protector.
  7. REINSTALL FLOOR SERVICE HOLE COVER

  1. REMOVE ENGINE FROM VEHICLE (See «REMOVAL»(ref-181073-S20984638732005073000000) )

  3. REMOVE KNOCK SENSOR Disconnect the knock sensor connector. Remove the nut and knock sensor.
  4. INSPECT KNOCK SENSOR Using an ohmmeter, make sure there is continuity between the terminals. If there is no continuity, replace the sensor.
  5. REINSTALL KNOCK SENSOR Install the knock sensor with the nut. Torque: 20 N.m (204 kgf.cm, 15 ft.lbf) HINT: Angling the knock sensor below the horizontal (below 0°) is recommended. Connect the knock sensor connector.

  1. INSPECT HEATER RESISTANCE OF A/F SENSOR Disconnect the sensor connector. Using an ohmmeter, measure the resistance between terminals +B and HT. Resistance: 1.8 to 3.4 ohm at 20°C (68°F) If the resistance is not as specified, replace the sensor. Torque: 44 N.m (450 kgf.cm, 32 ft.lbf) Reconnect the sensor connector.

  1. Disconnect the sensor connector.
  2. Using an ohmmeter, measure the resistance between the each terminals. Resistance: TERMINAL RESISTANCE SPECIFICATION Terminals Resistance VCP1 - EP1 2.25 to 4.75 kohm at 20°C (68°F) VCP2 - EP2 If the resistance is not as specified, replace the accelerator pedal assembly.
  3. Reconnect the sensor connector. NOTE: Be careful not to give a shock to the accelerator pedal assembly. Be careful not to disassemble the accelerator pedal assembly.

  1. WARM UP ENGINE Warm up the engine to the normal operating temperature.
  2. CONNECT HAND-HELD TESTER OR OBD II SCAN TOOL TO DLC3 Connect the hand-held tester or OBD II scan tool to the DLC3. HINT: Select the item "DIAGNOSIS/ENHANCED OBD II/DATA LIST/ALL/FC IDL". Please refer to the hand-held tester or OBD II scan tool operator's manual for further details.
  3. INSPECT FUEL CUTOFF/RESTART RPM Increase the engine speed to at least 3,000 RPM. Use a sound scope to check for the injector operating noise. When the accelerator pedal is released, injector operation sounds stop momentarily and then resumes. HINT: Measure with the A/C OFF. Standard: RPM SPECIFIED CONDITION Item Specified Condition Fuel cutoff RPM 1,050 to 1,150 RPM (M/T), 1,350 to 1,450 RPM (A/T) Fuel injector restart RPM 850 to 950 RPM (M/T), 1,050 to 1,150 RPM (A/T) If the result is not as specified, check for DTCs. If a DTC is present, follow the repair procedures according to the DTC.
