- Check other DTCs output (in addition to DTC P0746, P0766 or P0776). PREPARATION: Warm up the engine. Turn the ignition switch OFF. Connect the hand-held tester or the OBD II scan tool to the DLC3. Turn the ignition switch ON. Turn ON button the hand-held tester or the OBD II scan tool. Select the item "DIAGNOSIS/ENHANCED OBD II/DTC INFO/CURRENT CODES". CHECK: Read the DTCs using the hand-held tester or the OBD II scan tool. RESULT: RESULT DISPLAY Display (DTC output) Proceed to Only P0746, P0766 or P0776 is output A P0746, P0766 or P0776 and other DTCs are output B HINT: If any other codes besides P0746, P0766 or P0776 are output, perform the troubleshooting for those DTCs first. B : Go to relevant DTC chart (See «DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE CHART»(ref-180980-S29793334842005073000000) ). A : Go to next step.
- Check shift solenoid valve SL1, SL2 or S4 operation. PREPARATION: Jack up the vehicle. Remove the oil pan. Remove the shift solenoid valve SL1, SL2 or S4. CHECK: Check the shift solenoid resistance. Check the shift solenoid valve SL1 or SL2: Measure the resistance between terminals 1 and 2 of the shift solenoid connector. Check the shift solenoid valve S4: Measure the resistance between terminal 1 of the shift solenoid connector and the solenoid body. Check the shift solenoid operation. Check the shift solenoid valve SL1 or SL2: Connect the positive (+) lead with a 23 W bulb to terminal 1 and the negative (-) lead to terminal 2 of the solenoid valve connector, then check the movement of the valve. Check the shift solenoid valve S4: Connect the positive (+) lead with a 23 W bulb to the terminal of the shift solenoid connector and the negative (-) lead to the solenoid valve body, then check the movement of the valve. OK: Resistance SHIFT SOLENOID CONNECTOR TERMINALS RESISTANCE SL1 5.1 to 5.5ohm SL2 5.1 to 5.5ohm S4 11 to 15ohm The shift solenoid valve makes operation noise. NG : Replace shift solenoid valve SL1, SL2 or S4. OK : Go to next step.
- Check valve body (see chapter 2 in problem symptoms table) (See «PROBLEM SYMPTOMS TABLE»(ref-180980-S07267908642005073000000) ). NG : Repair or replace valve body (See «ON-VEHICLE REPAIR»(ref-181124-S04415141432005073100000) ). OK : Go to next step.
- Check torque converter clutch (See «INSPECTION»(ref-181124-S08986891612005073100000) ). NG : Replace torque converter clutch. OK : Repair or replace automatic transaxle assembly.
CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION
Shifting from L to O/D is performed in combination with ON and OFF operation of the shift solenoid valves SL1 and SL2 which is controlled by the ECM. If an open or short circuit occurs in either of the shift solenoid valves, the ECM controls the remaining normal shift solenoid valve to allow the vehicle to be operated smoothly (Fail-safe function).
Scheme 297
Fail-safe function
If either of the shift solenoid valve circuits develops an open or short, the ECM turns the other shift solenoid ON and OFF in order to shift into the gear positions shown in the table below. The ECM also turns the shift solenoid valve SL OFF at the same time. If both solenoids malfunction, hydraulic control cannot be performed electronically, and so it must be done manually.
Manual shifting as shown in the following table must be done (In case of a short circuit, the ECM stops sending the current to the short circuit solenoid).
